- Toby Keith scored his 23rd number 1 on the country singles chart with “Love Me If You Can”.
- Steve Mullen from FightSMA, a nonprofit organization working to help find a cure for spinal muscular atrophy, wrote in to tell us about an auction they’re having in a couple of days on October 13th. One of the items is a pretty sweet trip for four to Nashville in December just before Christmas. A few of the things included:
The Ice Tracks to Nashville auction package includes a three-night stay for four in December at the Gaylord Opryland Resort, as the city trucks in two million pounds of ice to ensure a “White Christmas”. The auction winner will receive tickets and VIP experiences, including meet and greets, to “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes, and The Pam Tillis Christmas Dinner Party. The trip will also include a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame, dinner on the General Jackson Showboat, and a ride on the Delta River Flatboats! Many more experiences are included. This wonderful vacation is valid from Thursday, December 20 to Sunday, December 23, 2007.

- Chris Gray was much more optimistic about Kevin Fowler’s latest effort, Bring It On, than I was.
- On the Bill Mack XM satellite radio show Willie Nelson announced his Bad Boy Lawn Mower Race to be held on October 15 and 16 in Luck, Texas. If anything I’m left feeling a little envious that I can’t participate.

Seems insane to me to have a list of the greatest cheating songs and not have a single Moe Bandy track. That ol’rodeo clown is the king of cheating songs. Plus you got have Gary Stewarts ’she’s acting single, I’m drinking doubles’! Just plain crazy..

Classic. I think my favorite part is that it makes exactly as much sense for Detroit native Kid Rock to own Confederate flag anything (leaving aside the issue of whether or not anyone should own Confederate flag anything) as it does for Gretchen Wilson to have a Grammy.
Plus you got have Gary Stewart’s ’she’s acting single, I’m drinking doubles’! Just plain crazy…

Chris - You think that has anything to do with him not being on a big label? And I thought the same thing when I read “drinking party.”
Howard - The list doesn’t appear to have much thought behind it, just a means to gain some links. If those really are their choices though I’d attribute it to the type of readers that they draw not being big fans of country music.
Jonathan - You just can’t make stuff like that up. I can’t imagine someone throwing a party and leaving their Grammy laying around.

Yes I do. Very often that major-label promo money makes the difference between Top 5 and No. 1.

Chris, then what do you make of the #1 successes by artists like Emerson Drive, Heartland and Tracy Lawrence? Is it the fact that the first 2 had well-written songs or is it more like a ‘lucky’ break? Just curious. I’d like to hope that it’s because the songs were good songs (even if a better vocalist would’ve made “I Loved Her First” even better). I think Lawrence succeeded because he promoted the damn song for so long.

… and I could add that every now and then a song still goes to No. 1 just because people like it. Toby hasn’t had a really compelling single for a long time, IMHO.
Possible topic for discussion: “Love Me if You Can” is an apology for Toby’s past support of George W. Bush. (First one to tell me Toby is a Democrat gets a boot in the ass. It’s the American way.)
