Alan Jackson - Freight Train

Alan Jackson’s 18th release, Freight Train, lands on shelves next week. It was produced by Keith Stegall and features a duet with Lee Ann Womack on “Till the End” in tribute to the late Vern Gosdin. The title track was written by Fred Eaglesmith, while Jackson had a hand in writing eight of the twelve new tracks, including the current single “It’s Just That Way.”

What Critics Are Saying

There’s nothing flashy or showy on this album. The themes on Freight Train are familiar but welcome, and you definitely know you’re in Jackson territory. There are many songs about romantic love, a life parable disguised as a fishing song, a bittersweet paean to a young daughter, a lilting duet (with Lee Ann Womack), a song of regret, another one of goodbye, a tribute to the workingman and everyday life. That’s Jackson’s side of the street. These days, it’s not a very crowded place. — Chet Flippo, CMT

His 14th studio album, “Freight Train,” opens with the blue-collar tribute “Hard Hat and a Hammer,” which could be a giant radio hit, given the current economic woes in the heartland. He duets with Lee Ann Womack on Vern Gosdin’s 1977 weeper “Til the End,” and recruits bluegrass queen Rhonda Vincent for harmony on three tracks, including the haunting, lovely “Every Now and Then.” Jackson combines genuine emotion with a clever twist on “Tail Lights Blue.” — Wade Jessen, Billboard

I would love to see Randy Rogers Band cover The Band’s self titled album. I think think they’ve got the chops to pull it off, and make it unique enough that it wouldn’t sound like a note for note cover. Specifically “Up on Cripple Creek”

I would like to hear Josh Turner cover Big Bad John originally by Jimmy Dean.

Easy. I would looove to hear Brad Paisley cover the Styx song, “Mr. Roboto”.

I’d love to see Dierks Bentley do a Willie Nelson song, if he put some bluegrass behind a tune like “If you’ve got the money, I’ve got the time”, that could be a kicking song. Or some of Willie’s train stuff, maybe “City of New Orleans”. I think Dierks has the soul for it, when he isnt putting out radio crap, his “filler” songs are really really good.

Since Dwight Yoakam already did a tribute album to Buck Owens, my choice would be Jamey Johnson covering “Mama Tried” by the great Merle Haggard.

I’d like to hear Emily West tackle the old Loretta Lynn classic “Fist City”. I think Emily has the sassy spunk and vocal chops to pull it off, and that’s not an easy task.

(PS – To Obamavoters in San Francisco and West Hollywood: That’s “Fist City”, not “Fisting City”. Crikey, mate…)

I’d love to hear Travis Tritt do an album of Waylon Jennings songs. His version of “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean” from I’ve Always Been Crazy was outstanding, even if it was almost a carbon copy of the original.

There are quite a few options here. My gut reaction was to have Jamey Johnson do some classic Waylon such as Omaha or Honkey Tonk Heroes. That almost seems to easy though. I have only heard Easton Corbin’s radio song, but I imagine he could do a great rendition of a number of Hag tunes. I think I’m going to go the opposite extreme and say Keith Urban doing a tribute album to Lefty Frizzell because that would mean that country music had gotten it’s head out of it’s ass and was back on the right track.

Similar to the “Hey Good Lookin’” cover a few years back:

Uncle Kracker, Bon Jovi, Jewel, Jessica Simpson, Jessica Harp, Michelle Branch, Danny Gokey, and other special friends performing “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool”.

Wade, I think you are right.

Ok … I’m not typically a big Miranda fan, but I think she could do “You Aint Woman Enough To Take My Man” with conviction.

I know this may be kind of cheating, but having Reba re-release Does He Love You with Canadian Star Crystal Shawanda. Her voice just compliments Reba’s voice amazing. Check it out on youtube, they did it at Reba’s current Cancer Benefit Concerts in Canada.

Luckily I have never had a mullet. Did have the acid wash jeans and jacket and a Members Only jacket. But the coolness fact was dimmed by the fact I drove a 79 Ford Pinto.

I think Gary Allan performing “Is It Raining at Your House” by Vern Gosdin would be great!

  37. Lee
    March 24, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Jamey does a pretty good version of Dinosaur as well. I just think it would be cool to hear III sing that one and a few others off high notes, habits old and new, new south, and whiskey bent.

I’d love to see Kellie Pickler cover a Dolly Parton song, since her personality overlaps a lot with Dolly’s and Kellie has done Dolly’s music justice in concert performances

If I had to pick a particular song, I think it’d be “Jolene” =)

  40. Josh
    March 25, 2010 at 12:45 am

No one else championed Jolene cover than did Mindy Smith…and Dolly herself showed up on her music video…MS did wonderful and phenomenal job at it. As for this particular questionnaire, I’d be hard pressed to decide, however I’ll throw out a bone: a Brad Paisley instrumental tribute to Buck Owens on I’ve Got A Tiger By the Tail. I’d also suggest Keith Urban’s tribute to Wichita Lineman of Glen Campbell, but it’s already on Youtube via several rotations and he finally got his wish. :) Good luck to everyone.
