Willie Nelson to Appear on Next Snoop Dogg Album; The Civil Wars Perform for Paste; Grammy Performances Boost Sales
- Snoop Dogg‘s next album finds him collaborating with Willie Nelson:
The album’s most left-of-center track is the playful “Superman.” Accompanied by guitar and harmonica, Snoop and Willie Nelson trade riffs on living life with the hands they’ve been dealt and realizing, “I’m not Superman.” The idea to work together took shape when the two artists found themselves in Amsterdam doing shows there. “We got some studio time and wrote this song,” said Snoop. “It’s some cold, classic shit.”
Here’s video of the two performing the song a couple of years ago.
- The Civil Wars visit to the new Paste studio resulted in four new live videos.
- C.M., Brady, and My Kind of Country’s Occasional Hope agree: Cumberland Gap Connection is pretty rad.
- The Austin Chronicle‘s Jim Caligiuri on the new Jesse Dayton record One for the Dance Halls:
Sprinkled among the highly polished honky-tonk, there’s a tasty Nick Lowe cover and a sparkling duet with Brennen Leigh. These are Dayton’s strongest vocals to date, bringing to mind compadre Johnny Bush, and Warren Hood’s fiddle seals the deal.
- Mr. Caligiuri also calls the new Johnny Cash release, Memphis to Hollywood: Bootleg Vol. II, a must have.
- Grammy performers, which included folks like Lady Antebellum and Mumford & Sons, got big sales boosts from their appearances.
- Hayes Carll has a bone to pick with Todd Snider:
To hear Carll tell it, one of the stories Snider tells is actually his — a quip based around a bill the two shared once upon a time in a hoity-toity venue that provided the performers with an abundance of vegetables to munch on. Recalls Carll, upon seeing the buffet of carrots and the like, he turned to Snider and said, “I guess, once you become a rockstar, you get all the vegetables you want.” Amusing stuff, sure, but certainly Carll’s bit — which is why he was so miffed to hear that Snider used the same line on his album.

- In Galleywinter’s latest 20 Questions feature, Zach Jennings, owner of Lone Star Music, says you should check out Catie Offerman (MySpace).
I believe she’s 17 years old and a sophomore or junior in college already. Along the lines of the Ruby Jane or Sarah Jarosz prodigal talents. She played an in-store will Bill Whitbeck and floored us with her poise and ability to control a room. Sky’s the limit for her. She could be the next Marnie Stern or Gillian Welch or she could be the next Mandy Moore or Natalie Portman. She’s got the talent, looks & intelligence, but most importantly she has a presence that exudes personality and likeability. She just has that “it” trait that is extremely hard to define.

Like I said about the last Willie-and-Snoop news item: potheads have to stick together. I suppose our hearts should be warmed by the idea of two such disparate characters being brought together by their mutual love of the mean green.

Last night’s episode of “Justified” was the one that featured Dave Alvin and his band on stage in a honky tonk. It was the opening segment, and it didn’t last very long, but Dave’s name got mentioned numerous times. Good stuff, and I like the new song Dave wrote for it as well.
Hey, Jim Caligiuri didn’t include Sierra Hull in his list of young, female musical prodigies! What’s up with that? (lol)

Mandy Moore or Natalie Portman
So she can be a washed up and underrated actress or a prolific and overrated one? You can only be one of those two things.
The Civil Wars visit to the new Paste studio resulted in four new live videos.
Happy sigh. I heart The Civil Wars.

Loved Dave Alvin’s performance on Justified. Thought it was a great song and his appearance was worked into the series in a great way. Hope that they’ll start bringing on more artists to perform, because this was really fun.

Crystal Bowersox has a good and intriguing voice. Something different. Not plain vanilla. Imagine that!

I like Todd Snider and Hayes Carll and bought each of their releases this year. However, Todd has been telling the bit about the celery in conjunction with his “Bill Elliot Story” for a LONG time.
I can understand Hayes sentiment, but I think he’s factual incorrect about where Todd got the idea. Of course, these aren’t Hayes words, so its hard to tell with what tone the story was told.
