Willie & Family Perform At San Antonio Rodeo And The 100 Greatest Love Songs

  • I hope you guys aren’t sick of the concert reviews from the San Antonio Rodeo yet, because John Goodspeed has another great one from last night’s performance by Willie Nelson and three members of his family.

The concert was a family affair, too, with longtime pianist Bobbie Nelson, his little sister, and two new members — sons Micah Nelson on percussion and Lucas Nelson on vocals and lead guitar.

Lucas Nelson took the microphone for a blazing cover of Texas blues guitar wizard Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Flood Down in Texas” — and the vocals showed a lot of talent pumps in the veins of the Nelson clan, too.

  • The Americana Music Association has replaced executive director Jeff Green with Jed Hilly. Some of his credentials include:

Prior to moving to Nashville in 2002, Hilly was an executive in Sony Music’s New York office. In 1992, he coordinated elements of the grass roots artist development campaign for Pearl Jam. He later worked with MTV to create the first “Buzz Clip” retail marketing campaign which helped Oasis’ “Wonderwall” break through on the music charts leading to the band’s first multi-platinum success in the U.S.

  • Some people are a little upset that Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts weren’t allowed to sing their own songs at the Grammys. I find it disheartening that Rascal Flatts was chosen to represent country music at all. However, the part of the article I find the most entertaining is Larry King and his wife squabbling back and forth about the Dixie Chicks.
  • New York Daily News has a list of The 100 Greatest Love Songs. There’s a handful of country artists sprinkled throughout the list, but I would have thought that country should have a greater representation than what it got among this list.

  • Tracy Byrd, Tracy Lawrence and Pam Tillis will be showcasing new music at SXSW here in Austin during March, but from all the lists I’ve seen there won’t be very many other country acts.

I love your reviews! I heard Willie’s boys were back in Texas from Hawaii, and wife Annie, too. The boys played with their dad at the AetheriA fundraiser this week, as well. Kinky Friedman, Jessica Simpson, Larry Hagman joined in for the fundraiser, as well.

Willie’s boys are talented, aren’t they! I have heard them a few times, usually in the summer when the are off school and touring with dad, at his Picnic. But Willie’s daughters are good too, Amy Nelson, who plays with Folk Ute (with Arlo Guthrie’s daughter) and daughter Paula, who lives and plays music in Austin. I love Willie’s picnic, because you get to see all the kids come out and play with their dad.

    Thanks for the reviews.

I wish they were my reviews, unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to be at the rodeo last night. Do you know if any of his kids have albums out or not? I’d very much like to hear what they sound like.

Brody, the boys do have an album. They are part of a band in Hawaii, Planetary Bandits. They play kind of a funk/reggae/roots/blues/rock mix and are really quite good. Lukas on blues guitar is amazing. I have heard his “Flooding down in Texas”, and it gives you goosebumps. Willie brought the whole band to a couple of his Picnics in Fort Worth and I got to see/hear them there. Here’s a link to my blog about them http://stillisstillmoving.com/?cat=52. Also, they have a nice myspace space, http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=86828643 where you can hear a sample from the cd, one with Willie joining in. There cd is available from cdbaby.com; you have to search for them.

Ooops! Sorry, Brody, the band with Lukas and Micah Nelson is called Harmonic Tribe. They have changed their name a couple times, but they are now Harmonic Tribe. At CD baby, you have to search by that name.

My last comment on this, promise. [It’s your fault for getting me started on talking about Willie Nelson! :) ]Folk Uke, with daughter Amy has an album out, too. And Paula Nelson has album out, too.

Here’s one last link to Willie’s talented family; pictures from his ‘06 picnic.

Don’t worry about it, I knew when I posted about Willie this morning that it’d probably garner a comment from you ;) Thanks for letting me know the kid’s names, I’ll see if I can find something on Rhapsody.

I loved Carrie’s Grammy performance of “San Antonio Rose.” She’s performed her own singles a lot, so I liked the change. I agree with about Rascal Flatts: 10 minutes of them singing Eagles songs is not a fair representation of country.
