Will Lady Antebellum’s Rise Put A Damper On Caitlin & Will’s Success?

Brody Vercher | June 27th, 2008 Email Share

  • John Maglite claims the deck is already stacked against Caitlin & Will, the winners of CMT’s Can You Duet, due to the meteoric rise of Lady Antebellum.

In any case, for Caitlin & Will, what should matter most about Lady Antebellum is that they recently released their second single. “Lookin’ for a Good Time” is different than “Love Don’t Live Here” in that it prominently features the voices of both of the group’s lead singers. This means that Lady Antebellum is effectively making their radio debut as a male-female duo at the same time as Caitlin & Will… with the curious advantage of already being an established (if new) country act coming off of a highly successful debut single.

  • You know that guy Tim McGraw hoisted up on stage the other night? His name is Marcus Nirschl and has his own version of the events that unfolded. Despite being booted from the show, he’s still a Tim McGraw fan.
  • The video for Ashton Shepherd’s “Sounds So Good” is available for your viewing pleasure on the UMG YouTube page. Ashton published a blog entry earlier this month noting that her family and little boy were a part of the video, and in his review, Matt drew parallels between “Sounds So Good” and Randy Travis’ “Deeper Than the Holler.”
  • You’ll want to bust out ye olde cookbook and add Trisha Yearwood’s recipes for “His ‘n’ Hers Deviled Eggs,” “Fourth of July Coleslaw,” “Barbecued Chicken,” “Easy Baked Beans” and “Boiled Custard.” While you’re writing those down (or printing them out), check out her performance of “How Do I Live” on CBS’s Early Show.
  • Behind all the glitz and glamor country music artists are real people, too; some maybe more real than others. Elizabeth Cook is perhaps one of the most genuine. In her most recent MySpace blog post she talks about her surroundings since her mother died: “I just see a heavy cloud in the distance. It’s plum full of slow, steady rain. I think that’s the sadness coming….it’s gonna settle in, may pass on through, but I’ll probably be under at least a corner of it’s shade forever.”
  • Doug Freeman captures the essence of Emmylou HarrisAll I Intended to Be album with a solitary word. Transcendent.
  • Chet Flippo attributes Can You Duet’s heightened reputation, when compared to other TV music talent shows, to the stories that unfolded. It’s stories that attracted artists like Ray Charles and Solomon Burke to country music, and he says it’s the stories on Randy Travis‘ upcoming album, Around the Bend, that have caused the disc to monopolize so much of his time.
  • Here’s the new video for Brad Paisley’s “Waitin’ On a Woman,” featuring Andy Griffith.

OK, so I really like the new Brad Paisley video and I have always liked this song - except for me, I am always waiting on my husband.

I reviewed the new Caitlin & Will single @ Roughstock and thought about their similarity to the male-female duo ’slot’ that Lady A is ‘filling.’ Still, I ended up liking the song and figure it has a shot at country radio success.

I just bought Lady Antebellum’s debut CD and it is fantastic; in fact, one of the best I’ve heard in a long time, and good enough for me to have already bought tickets to one of their upcoming shows this summer. I highly doubt that the reality show winners will be able to touch them.

I like Will and Caitlyn WAY better than Lady A.

Oh, good. I’m sure the world was wondering what Marcus Nirschl had to say.

Anyone else think they should have used the Andy-Griffith-finishes-the-line trick a little more sparingly in the video? I thought it got a bit tiresome after a while. Still a good video, though, as you’d expect from Brad.

    Thanks for the plug, guys.

Dave, I don’t think anyone suggested that Will & Caitlin would be able to touch them, just that W&C seem to occupy the same space that Lady A recently claimed as their own and that with smaller playlists at radio W&C will suffer because of it. You’ll have to let us know how their live show is, though.

BTW, that brings up another question as far as the Can You Duet duo’s name. Does anybody know if they’re going to go by Caitlin & Will, Will & Caitlin or something completely different?

Since Will and Caitlin are trying to muscle in on the turf of Lady Antebellum, I’d suggest the name “The Carpetbaggers”! (lol)

I like Ashton Shepherd’s new video and I really like the song. I wonder if they had to pay Ashton’s family members union scale? Hmmm… I really hope this song does well on Airhead Country Radio, but since its anything but an airhead song I have my doubts it will.

Elizabeth Cook’s blogs are always about as down to earth and real as a human being can get, which is one reason I like her and her music so much. Who else would have the honesty to close a blog about her mother’s recent death with the line: “Cause dammit, Mama died.”

PS - Don’t forget Sarah Buxton on the Saturday Night Opry this weekend, and The Wright’s just released a new home made covers album titled “In The Summertime”.

Nice video for the Paisley video.

Caitlin and Will were never gonna be bit hit artists. As sad as it is to say, they just dont “look” like stars, and in our video focused music generation, the days of average looking people being anything other than indie artists or song writers is probably gone. Which sucks.

Brody, I actually don’t have anything against Caitlin and Will, even though my previous post may have that tone. It would be unfair for me judge them so early, but I was making that last statement based on just how good I think Lady A is so far. I will definitely let ya’ll know what I think of their live show, though! I haven’t been to a concert in a year so I’m really hoping Lady A can pull through and deliver a great performance.

I thought that the Andy Griffith thing was a missed opportunity. It’s a good video, but I would have preferred a less literal interpretation of the song.

With his video, Brad did something he does with his live show — give the people a good visual and they won’t mind if he goes and plays his guitar for a little while. :) The best line of his video: “I’m emailing you a photo of me and this is me fairly angry.” Actually, I liked the intro better than the song. Is it me or does Brad only release to radio these days jokey cliche songs (Alcohol, Ticks, Online, Celebrity, I’m Still a Guy) or cheesy love/female songs (She’s Everything, Waiting on a Woman, Little Moments)? I guess that’s just his shtick. It works for him, but my favorite Brad moments are when he stretches a little farther.

I’d be surprised if Caitlin and Will come up with a name for their duo. Isn’t name recognition everything?

Love love love Emmylou Harris’ new album.

I can’t remember the last time I found anything about Brad Paisley’s music to be stimulating. His opening acts are more worth going to see perform that him, and for the second summer in a row even.

I, for one, wanted to hear that guy at McGraw’s concert had to say. His story looked pretty close to what I saw on Youtube. It was obvious McGraw was misleading him when he wanted the guy on stage and then, when he pulled his arm back to fake like he wanted to fight, my Gawd. Anybody with an army of bodyguards around who throws a punch is a wuss, even worse if he just acts like he wants to throw a punch.

I dunno. If the guy did a bad thing, he would have been/will be arrested. Not yet.

Are Lady A really considered a duo? I’ve been thinking of them as a group because there’s three faces/names in the limelight.

Loved the video. It was worth watiting for :)

Hum, interesting posting on C&W. Has their song “Even Now” been released to the radio? I bought it and like it. I thought I read where the CD will not even be released until next year? I would have thought a little sooner than that.
You can do something with personal appearance, but it is difficult to clean up vocal talent. Certainly have seen evidence of that considering some of the live performances I have seen lately. Ugh. The opinion piece on C&W mentioned power house and grit. Well, they have that going for em, which is nice. They also have rather endearing personalities. Average looking? I don’t think so. They are pretty young and I for one hope I get a chance to see them blossom. I think I will, actually.
I am going to hold judgement for a while and look forward to future releases.
And you know what they say about saying never. We shall see. Good luck to ya, C&W. I like you, too.

Lady Antebellum who? Caitlin & Will will wow C&W fans and cross over southern rock fans. Given the chance, they will rocket to the top. I love this duo! Just wait until their album debuts in later this year.

I bought Catlin and Will’s “Even Now” and it’s great! I wasn’t as impressed with LA and never bought the ablum.

I love Ashton! She is authentic Country. But ok, “Cooter lushing on the video truck” Is that the right words?

Interesting post Sir…Very well written in my opinion! Thanks for the comparison. I LOVE Lady A and if thats what people are comparing us too I am flattered.

Thanks to all who posted their thoughts, and our single is NOT YET released to radio…I am told it will be in the fall. BUT you can get it on itunes, Amazon and/or Rhapsody…and if you want to listen to it before you buy it, its on our myspace along with Love Is (the song we did on the finale).

I hope we prove John wrong…all we can do is pray, be ourselves and hope people accept it!!!!

    Thanks ya’ll!

I am a huge Lady A fan and have been since the first time I heard them. I can’t get enough of their latest cd. They have such a great time with each other and seem to truely adore and cherrish the friendships between the three. I am anxiously awaiting their August 11th performance in ohio.

I don’t think that the success of Lady A should be a threat to Caitlin and Will at all. You guys should be so proud of yourselves! People should not forget that these two were paired up and did not come to the show together. The chemistry of your musical talents were just meant to be. Caitlin…you are beautiful from the inside out and you can sing like there’s no tomorrow. You don’t hold back and that will take you far. Stay comfortable in your own skin and just keep givin’ us everything you’ve got. Will…you rock! I wish there was a way I could be the first to buy your cd because my husband, four children and myself are your biggest fans! I really hope you two stay together and it will be fun to watch your friendship grow. Congrats on such an awesome show and walking away with the win. We looked forward to every episode!

Thank you Arlette! It’s strange to pit artists against each other as if only one could emerge victorious. It’s as if to say that no solo female artist should bother singing since Patsy Cline already laid claim to Female Solo Artist. Lady Antebellum can do their thing and be received well, even as will Caitlin & Will (this *is* the name of the duo). I’m glad to be able to hear such a true voice as Caitlin, magically met by Will’s. To watch your journey on Can You Duet elevated the show beyond what I thought that it could be! Who could not be moved by “Like We Never Loved At All” and then “Stupid Boy” and then “Love Is”? I felt like I was at a concert just watching you Caitlin muscle honest feeling right out of you in sound.
thank you thank you thank you ~ Shay

ps Joey & Rory also has an album coming soon…

    EXACTLY Shay!
Caitlin and Will brought some freshness to the music that they covered and that is tough to do. Am waiting patiently for the CD. On CYD they chose their songs wisely. Here’s hoping they have had enough time to chose wisely for this CD. I am still keeping tabs.
