Whitney Duncan – “The Bed That You Made”

Whitney Duncan Songwriters: Whitney Duncan, Hillary Lindsay, and John Shanks

Whitney Duncan has all the ingredients to be a star – stellar looks, a good voice, some attitude and overall marketability. Unfortunately, her first single “When I Said I Would” didn’t really play up to her strengths, but rather drowned them in an overly loud production. Luckily, “The Bed That You Made” is the complete opposite.

Written by Duncan, John Shanks, and all-star Hillary Lindsey, the song treads on the same familiar territory as fellow blonde-lookers Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, and Taylor Swift, with a nice kiss-off to a wrong-doing lover. But instead of being completely blunt, Duncan and her co-writers create some nice imagery, including the catchy hook – “How does it feel to be feelin’ that way/Lying in the bed that you made.” The clever little double-entendre comparing the self-made bed to his self-made loneliness is refreshing, and really sets the song apart.

The production of “The Bed That You Made” works just as well as the hook. Things start out a little rough with a somewhat silly clap-along beat, but luckily a nice dose of dobro comes in to save the day. Her vocals are more in line with Heidi Newfield’s soulful, bluesy style rather than Pickler’s sugar-coated twang, and she tackles the song with just the right amount of confident sass.

Surprisingly, the arrangement of the song doesn’t bring to mind Underwood or Swift, but rather Lucinda Williams’ “Can’t Let Go,” and that’s where Duncan succeeds. She manages to be contemporary country, but doesn’t follow the rules set by her peers. Of course, the jury is still out on Duncan, but hopefully she continues to utilize her talents and release thoughtful material. If she does, she has the potential to reach the heights of another blonde former Nashville Star contestant.

Thumbs Up

I got to see Whitney perform this live here in LA at The Mint club a couple of months back and it was by far my favorite song from her original material. Most of the songs were up tempo screamin’ rockers and this song was a refreshing change of pace. I really don’t know if radio will spin this single, but if they did I think it would do well.

The theme of this song seems like a re-do of Highway 101’s great breakthrough single “The Bed You Made For Me”, but its been 20 years since that song came along so I doubt most Top 40 country radio listeners are familiar with it.

Hmmmm…I don’t think I’m sold. As I’ve said before, the song kinda lacks muscle and her voice still sounds weak.

Solid review, man. I don’t love it – the hook is pretty cliche to me, and she actually doesn’t sound as lively or distinct as I think she could – but I like that it sounds like nothing else at radio and is actually kind of identifiable as country music. This is encouraging.

I thought the hook was OK compared to “you should’ve said no, baby and you might still have me” or “maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats”

I don’t love it either, but it’s a huge step up from “When I Said I Would” and a step in the right direction for Duncan.

The song sounds rather Shania-ish to me (that’s not intended as a compliment).

I’m a huge fan of Whitney Duncan! “The Bed You Made” is one of my least favorite songs of hers. If you listen to her new EP (itunes) every one of those songs are better than this one. It’s really frustrating when record labels release the wrong singles. Her songs “Little By Little” or “So Sorry Mama” should have been the 2nd single. She does remind me a little of Shania, and obviously that’s NOT a BAD thing. Her voice is very unique and strong. Check out her EP and you’ll see what I mean. You should review it!!

Hope – I thought it reminded me of a Shania song too (some of which are ok). In the first verse I was also reminded of “Guys Do It All The Time” (lyrically).

Overall I like it, if for nothing else, it is upbeat with good production and her vocals are not too whiny or twangy or OVERBEARING (screaming diva).

Side note: I never liked her at all on Nashville Star.

BTW–she actually has So Sorry Mama & Little by Little on her myspace page myspace.com/whitneyduncanmusic for the people that are too cheap to buy it or need convincing.

I didn’t love her on Nashville Star either but she has convinced me that she is much more than what that show showed of her.

It *is* better than anything else I’ve heard from her thus far, though I’d still take “Before He Cheats” over this.

Bob, its nice to see Whitney has a dedicated fan in you personally but she’s going to need a whole lot more fans and soon in order to get radio airplay momentum. My guess is that the EP release tested the commercial waters and if this single doesn’t do well at radio Whitney’s full album will never be released (on a CD anyway). Its like Sarah Buxton style deja’vu all over again…..

I’m sorry, I’m not on the Whitney Duncan (or the Sarah Buxton) bandwagon(s). One step above the Carrie/Kellie/Taylor crowd doesn’t mean its good.

The song isn’t getting good rotation. WB pulled the plug on the video because of that. It’s a shame because she has a natural beauty. Unlike most others on the scene today.
