Whitney Duncan – “All I Want For Christmas”

Whitney Duncan - All I Want For Christmas Is You Songwriters: Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff.

Yes, Virginia, The 9513 is reviewing a song co-written by Mariah Carey.

Her Highness of High Notes’ “All I Want For Christmas” has thrived past its 1994 debut as a popular holiday cover song by artists of many genres, from emo rockers My Chemical Romance to the poor man’s Hannah Montana, the Cheetah Girls.

The song’s versatility speaks to its likability, and the sexy secular tune has served Carey well: “All I Want For Christmas” remains one of her highest charting singles and is the best-selling holiday ringtone ever, a modern-day honor bestowed by today’s cell phone-dependent musical audience.

Country newcomer and former Nashville Star contestant Whitney Duncan adds her name to the cover list by releasing her twangy version as a single on iTunes this month. While Carey’s version evokes images of glittery (no, not that Glitter) holiday histrionics, Duncan could be sitting by the fire and Christmas tree strumming her guitar during the intro.

Duncan’s ending high notes come up predictably short of Carey’s, and she is wise to keep the most far-reaching octaves few and far between. She relies instead on her voice’s sultry grit, and there are tinges of Tanya Tucker in Duncan’s voice that emerge through the prerequisite jingle bells.

“All I Want For Christmas” has the same breathy, bluesy vocals of “Skinny Dippin’,” which she performed on Nashville Star’s original song night when the show was still on the USA Network and still had some resemblance to a talent show geared toward country music.

Unfortunately, the also shares her sometimes stilted phrasing and nasally accent that can come on a little too strong.

If you’re looking for a touching Christmas song extolling the virtues of the true meaning of the holiday season, this song ain’t it. But it’s a fun holiday romp that jives well with Duncan’s flirty image; “All I Want For Christmas” is one of those songs that sticks in listeners’ heads—and Duncan’s record label, Warner Brothers, must be hoping the song will be stuck in enough heads after the holidays, when her album Right Road Now is released early next year.

Thumbs Up

Ha, I hope this is the first and last review of a Mariah Carey written song here on the 9513.. but ya never know with all that crossover these days.

I have a love-hate relationship with this song. I like it, but it’s just too darn catchy!

Speaking of the cute and perky Whitney, whom I got to see perform live last week at “The MINT” here in Los Angeles, here are the details:

Whitney Duncan Goes Digital! Thursday, December 11, 2008
Whitney Duncan is going the digital route for her first release on Warner’s. With an album delayed from January 2009 until sometime later next year, “Whitney Duncan: Selections From Right Road Now” will go digital Dec. 23.

The EP will include four tracks from her upcoming debut CD, “Right Road Now” and one bonus track. The EP will feature the singles When I Said I Would and Bed That You Made. All tracks were co-written by Duncan and produced by Mark Bright and John Shanks. Other songs are Little By Little, So Sorry Mama and Away.

Duncan helped write all songs on the upcoming CD. Duncan recently released her own version of Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas on iTunes. The song attracted about 4,000 downloads last week.”

Rick’s comment: I spoke with one of Whitney’s guitarists after her gig (Whitney was cornered in a booth by a stalker type) and he thought the EP would be available on CDs as well, but I figured that was optimistic. The fact a digital only EP is being released and the full album release is being delayed indefinitely sounds exactly like what Lyric Street did to Sarah Buxton. Its not quite being put on the label’s shelf, but it sure comes close.

    Rick,

Nah. They just wanted something for people to actually buy. The album isn’t being delayed more than it was before. The upcoming single “Bed That You Made” should be the hit that “When I Said I Would” wasn’t. Also, they will press copies of it on CD because it will be sold at her shows until the CD comes out.
