Vince Gill Performed For Four Hours At The Ryman And Country Music Is Not Dead, It Is Only Sleeping
- Peter Cooper wrote a perceptively entertaining article for The Tennessean about Vince Gill’s performance at the Ryman on Wednesday night. Gill had a 17-piece band and played from 7:30 to around 11:30.
Much of the set list was made up of material from “These Days,” and the audience was pleased enough with the new songs that the absence of some well-known, well-worn hits wasn’t an issue.
- Tim McGraw’s StyleSonic Records has partnered with Mercury Records to help launch the career of the band Halfway to Hazard. McGraw says “”These guys are the real thing. The songs are amazing, they have great energy live, and we just had a blast making the record they wanted to make.” More can be found on The Tennessean.
- The release date for Gretchen Wilson’s third album, One of the Boys, has been set for May 15. Wilson told Billboard “lyrically, I think I reached a little further inside for a few of these songs, but there is still a lot of ass-kicking country on it.”
- Chet Flippo compares country music to a turtle he recently rescued from the blacktops of urban progress:
Then I reflected, turning off junk on the radio as I drove home, this turtle was in pretty much the same situation as country music finds itself today. Hit by sudden so-called progress that it is powerless to control, and frozen by fear, country music is stuck in the middle of the highway and afraid to move.
He also mentions that CDs are dying, a trend that a lot of analysts have been echoing lately. I’d be distraught if CDs ever fully got replaced. I buy my share of digital downloads, but for every album I purchase online I probably buy three CDs. There’s something about the tangibility of CDs that I prefer over digital files, not to mention the album artwork and liner notes. Flippo concludes that country music is not dead, it’s just sleeping. I sure hope so.

Ashley Gearing - “Out the Window” Gearing makes this mediocre song listenable enough that it earns a very qualified thumbs up.
Taylor Swift - “Should’ve Said No” This song is way too loud. It starts out with that nice banjo lick and then – wham! – I’m diving for the volume control.
Craig Morgan - “Love Remembers” Morgan has here abandoned the sometimes quirky, often twangy nature of his music, instead offering what sits as a startling departure from songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” and “International Harvester.”

The Vince Gill tour that got me excited was this one with Amy Grant and Del McCoury, but alas, they don’t even come close Austin.
