- Gary Allan’s idea for his Get Off On The Pain tour:
“I thought that it would be really cool and really hip — especially during this ‘Get Off On The Pain’ tour — to have somebody getting tattooed onstage,” he explains of inviting fans to get inked in front of thousands of fans.
- Reckless Kelly’s Cody Braun on the band’s new album, Somewhere In Time:
“We had our work cut out trying to sell our label (Yep Roc) on the concept,” Cody Braun says. “We wanted to make it clear that this wasn’t a tribute record. It’s still a Reckless Kelly record, but we’re doing someone else’s songs.”
- The video for Luke Bryan’s song “Rain Is A Good Thing” was released exclusively on iTunes today. (iTunes)
- Nathan Rabin on Kitty Wells career:
Wells couldn’t go on releasing answer songs without being labeled a novelty artist, but those two songs ["It wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" and "I'm Paying For That Back Street Affair"] established the template for her subsequent work. She delved into infidelity over and over, but seldom from the perspective of a cheating wife or mistress. Rather, she sang extensively from the point of view of a traumatized wife trying to hold onto her unfaithful husband.
- Carrie Underwood inspired the specially-created Sesame Street character Carrie Underworm.
- Craig Shelburne listed a sampling of new Americana songs he’s been enjoying the past few weeks.
- Information from Sunday night’s SPBGMA awards is trickling out, but The Bluegrass Blog as a pretty good list of winners posted so far with Rhonda Vincent taking both the traditional female vocalist and entertainer awards. (via reader email)
- The Zac Brown Band used Twitter to respond to a letter PETA penned urging the group to host all-vegan eat and greets:
@zacbrownband: Dear PETA – Plants are living creatures too… Bacon had a mother but so did Pickle. It takes life to support life – welcome to the planet.
@zacbrownband: Chicken is the new tofu.
- Watch the new video for Josh Thompson’s song “Beer On The Table.”
- Josh Turner is really proud of his song “The Answer:”
I was in my car at night listening to this song, and I started crying because I couldn’t believe that I had written that song. It sounded so great. To this day, I still can’t believe I had a hand in writing it. But I felt very strongly about it being a part of the record because I felt like it was a powerful song. It stood right up next to the other songs we had on the record. I felt like it would really mean a lot to a lot of people.
- Newcomer Laura Bell Bundy isn’t exactly aiming for the younger demographic.

From what I have heard from Laura Bell Bundy you would have to be young-ish to think the vocals cound good or like the lyrics.
As for Gary Allen, I smell gimmick.

The Laura Bell Bundy videos have been bloked by UMG! I guess she was portraying an image UMG figures won’t go over so well with Soccer Moms and their tween daughters. On the other hand they appear to give a roll model image for Miley Cyrus to strive for! (lol)
Its nice to see Vince Gill supporting the Time Jumpers as its sure to increase their visibility around town. These days western swing bands in Nashville need all the help they can get! (lol) Way to go Vince!
I love Zac Brown’s response to those leftist PETA / Obamavoter bloc morons. Good job Zac and keep up the good fight, and especially keep grillin’ those juicy steaks…

unfortunately the Time Jumpers Shows will never be the same now that they announced that Vince is an official member…nothing against Vince…he always does a great job but now the place will be filled with people screaming out for Vince songs and you will have to get there 1.5 hours before show time to get a seat….all good things must come to an end and it probably just did for fans of great western swing in a quiet respectful environment.

now the place will be filled with people screaming out for Vince songs
I’ll bet not. And smart people have been getting there early on Monday nights for quite some time.

Zac Brown Band – You gotta love the reply. We’ll think of you PETA when we put a juicy piece of chicken on our “PETA” bread.
Josh Turner – Hope his CD does well. He’s one of the good guys.
Laura Bell Bundy – You’re kidding me. Right?
SPBGMA Awards – This organization needs to get itself out in the public know more.

Rick’s Country Quiz!
Here’s the latest Mediabase radio adds list for the top 6 song adds this last week. Which of the artists listed doesn’t quite fit in with the others?
This Week’s Mediabase Most-Added Songs:
1) George Strait/I Gotta Get To You (41 station adds)
2) Tim McGraw/Still (26)
3) Reba/I Keep On Loving You (17)
4) Martina McBride/Wrong Baby Wrong (16)
5) Emily West+Keith Urban/Blue Sky (14)
6) Kenny Chesney/Ain’t Back Yet (14)
I would love to see Emily West maintain that kind of momentum in the coming weeks and do well on the charts with “Blue Sky”. Maybe the Keith Urban factor will be enough to get Emily in the door at Top 40 country radio this go round. Go Emily!
PS – Maybe the Time Jumpers need to move to a bigger venue? I know that’s heresy but if I were in Nashville I’d rather be able to get in the door and see them perform at a larger venue (with minimal hassle) than not be able to get into a packed Station Inn.

Joe Nichols to a new record label? Anyone know what he’s talking about?
February 9, 2010 at 12:26 pm Permalink
Perhaps he’s referring to the Universal South-Show Dog Nashville merger?

I’m guessing Obama is too centrist for PETA members.
To be realistic, I don’t think Vince is drawing huge crowds anymore these days. The last Vince concert I attended, in 2006, the mid-sized auditorium wasn’t even half full and it was very easy for me to get very good seats for a concert that I’m attending in April. I honestly don’t think he’s going to ruin anything, Roger.

I am smitten in every possible way with Laura Bell Bundy.

Couple o’ notes:
-Will probably pick up that label-forced Cagle GH comp just ’cause I dig him…
-Gary Allen is COOL. Period. He’s cool the same way Hag was/is cool.
-ZBB are funny bastards. Reckon I’d enjoy a pint or ten with them boys.
That is all. :)

Laura Bell Bundy’s idea of on stage antics seems a lot more interesting than Gary Allan’s.
February 9, 2010 at 2:07 pm Permalink
Sam: Except that neither Gary nor Laura Bell came up with anything that hasn’t been done since the 1970’s.
February 9, 2010 at 2:24 pm Permalink
Stormy – neither idea may be terribly original. But I see no entertainment value in Gary Allan’s gimmick and at least some in Laura Bell Bundy’s gimmick. Given the choice between the two gimmicks, I’d rather see Laura Bell Bundy’s unoriginality than Gary Allan’s unoriginality.

I’m an environmentalist myself, but even I can enjoy a good tidbit between ZBB and PETA. Personally, I think PETA takes things too far too seriously too fast. But hats off to ZBB…a really classic response. :P
February 9, 2010 at 2:34 pm Permalink
Sam: I don’t know. You might get a good tatoo out of Gary’s; Laura’s seems like it would be a pretty bad lap dance.
February 9, 2010 at 3:01 pm Permalink
I’ll take a bad lap dance over a good tattoo any day.
February 9, 2010 at 3:04 pm Permalink
Okay, but I’m female.

I really don’t like the Zac Brown Band, but I love that response to PETA… rip ‘em a new one boys :P
February 9, 2010 at 4:22 pm Permalink
I think ole Roger is a tad bit out of touch. I agree with Jon and Leann. People won’t be screaming for Vince songs and I wouldn’t expect the crowds to be out the door.
Vince is a great guy and a great artist… but he has such a common prescence in and around Nashville that it’s not unusual to see him pop up anywhere and everywhere.
It’s not a knock on him, but if you live in Nashville you’ve probably seen Vince perform a couple of times–whether you’ve wanted to or not.

Pierce, Rick and Jon….I really don’t think i am that far off the mark on what the effect will be to the announcement that Vince is a full-timejumper. I have been going down there for ten years for their monday night shows…in the last few years if word leaked that Vince was playing the place was full at 8….again..not calling out Vince because i love his playing and singing and love listening to him play with them….he did a swing version of “go rest high on that mountain one night” that was great and he played an incredible song about John Hughey in his first show back after John passed with John’s wife in the audience..again a great preformance by Vince…I just don’t think it was necessary for them to send a press release out that Vince was a full-timejumper (so every tourist that googles what to do on a monday night in Nashville will go to the station inn) when they were already at capacity every time i have been in there in the last year..just my opinion but it has gottenn to be such a social thing that it is getting harder and harder to hear the music of these incredible musicians because of the audience chatter….I truly respect all your opinions so I thought I should clarify mine.

Laura Bell Bundy is who Carrie Underwear wishes she could be. Here’s one genre evolution that I won’t complain about.
February 10, 2010 at 1:54 am Permalink
matt C,
Why would Carrie want to be that cornball, Laura Bell Bundy? Her fake twang and bizzare facial expressions which she thinks signifies stage presence is nothing to brag about.
She is way too over the top for mainstream music, if she wants to succeed she needs to tone it down imo.
