UT Quarterback Colt McCoy Cites Country Songs as Best Motivators
- Josh Turner is set to host the four-hour America’s Grand Ole Opry Weekend Year-End Special.
- On Friday, January 5th Chuck Prophet and friends were accidentally locked in Closer Recording Studios. Armed with a few beers, peanut butter, and a battery powered record player with Waylon Jennings’ Dreaming My Dreams LP the incarcerated occupants made the best of their situation. If the events recorded by John Murry are actually true they decided to reinterpret every song on that Jennings’ LP. The results of which you can listen to and download on Dreaming Waylon’s Dreams. - Cody Canada says his band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, has no regrets about any decisions that they’ve made when it comes to their music. To illustrate his point he told a story about hanging out with another guy from his label, Tim McGraw.
“We were with Tim McGraw in LA two years ago,” he says. “Joe Nichols, he’s our label mate, just got a gold record. We’re sitting backstage or sitting in our bus or something and I told Tim, ‘Well, let’s get one of those. Let’s get a gold record.’ He said, ‘Well, you let me drive.’
“He was dead serious. He said, ‘You let me drive, you let me pick the songs and I’ll get you one.’ I said, ‘Dude, I was kidding. If we’re going to get a gold record, it’s going to be because of who we are.’”
I guess McGraw finally got his band when Halfway to Hazard came a long.
- Garth Brooks donated mementos from his singing career to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
Brooks’ trademark black Stetson Tyler cowboy hat, a stage outfit of Wrangler jeans and black cowboy boots, and a guitar he smashed on stage at a Dallas concert in 1991 will soon join the artifacts of other musical greats at the “Treasures of American History” exhibit.
- Jesse Dayton and Brennen Leigh preform plenty of covers on their latest album, but This Is Texas Music writer Patrick says that they really shine on their originals. At times they’re a little over the top, he says ” but overall, it’s an entertaining throwback that puts a modern spin on the golden age of AM country radio.”
- Pamela LeBlanc asked several University of Texas athletes what songs they felt made the best motivators. Longhorn quarterback Colt McCoy couldn’t decide between two songs for his number one choice; Kenny Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractors Sexy” and George Strait’s “I Can Still Make Cheyenne”. No wonder the Horns lost to the Aggies. Props to the captain of the rowing team, Alex Janss, for giving a shout out to Adam Hood for “Million Miles Away”. So the question begging to be asked, what songs are your best motivators?
- Be sure to enter the contest to win your own copy of Hag’s Christmas or Country Christmas from EMI. Just enter your name and email. Winners will be chosen on Friday.
- Kellie Pickler takes a page from the Jessica Simpson playbook on Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?. Is this an act?

Ashley Gearing - “Out the Window” Gearing makes this mediocre song listenable enough that it earns a very qualified thumbs up.
Taylor Swift - “Should’ve Said No” This song is way too loud. It starts out with that nice banjo lick and then – wham! – I’m diving for the volume control.
Craig Morgan - “Love Remembers” Morgan has here abandoned the sometimes quirky, often twangy nature of his music, instead offering what sits as a startling departure from songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” and “International Harvester.”
Ashton Shepherd - “Sounds So Good” Shepherd lovingly sings her life’s soundtrack in a voice imbued with honest, lived experiences.

Funny thing about that Tim McGraw comment. I had the Kelly Willis and Lori McKenna albums lined up on my playlist and I was listening in that order and a song came on and I thought “Damn, that sounds like it could be a Tim McGraw song.” Come to find out, it was the first song on Lori McKenna’s album and Tim McGraw co-produced it.
I used to ride around on a forklift at work singing “She Thinks My Forklift’s Sexy,” other than that, those songs that McCoy picked sure aren’t very motivating.
That entire Kellie Pickler episode is available for viewing for free on AOL. Sadly, I can’t tell if she’s acting or not.

Hmm, I’m a little unclear on the “motivating” songs. Does this mean songs that pump you up before athletics?
If so, I’m a college athlete, so I can weigh in on this topic:
1) Before She Does by Eric Church
2) Like It’s a Bad Thing by Gary Allan
3) T-R-O-U-B-L-E by Travis Tritt
4) I’m Fine Either Way by Bobby Pinson
5) You Might Want to Think About It by Chris Cagle
6) Standing Outside The Fire by Garth Brooks
7) Back to Caroline by Jamey Johnson
8) He Can’t Quit Her by Gary Allan
9) A Country Boy Can Survive by Hank Jr.
10) Measure of a Man by Jack Ingram

Pierce, I think you have the right idea. The author wrote “Sometimes a blast of just the right music is what it takes to run up that last hill or make it through that final set of leg presses.” So it’s got to be something that pumps you up. You’ve got some good picks on your list, especially 8 and 9.

for motivation (big meeting/presentation, which can be more brutal than rugby sometimes), I will crank “Bodies” by Drowning Pool and “It doesnt get any better than this” by Jones, Cash, Waylon, Willie etc…. one is mean, the other is positive…

I was always big on James Brown and Public Enemy during my workouts. “Mother Popcorn” and “Brothers Gonna work it Out” just do it better for me than country when it comes to workouts.
But as far as country is concerned, maybe “Fast as You” by Dwight Yoakam or something ballsy and aggressive like that.

I watched Kellie Pickler when she was on the “Smarter Than a 5th Grader” program and if its an act, then she is awfully good at it! I personally think she really is that ditzy and just didn’t pay much attention to her teachers or homework while in school. Many of the beauties cast each season on the TV program “Beauty and the Geek” display a similar lack of general knowledge, so Kellie is not alone. Fortunately Kellie’s brain is definitely tuned into country music and she can croon traditional country with the best of them when turned loose. Kellie may not be the brightest bulb intellectually, but she seems like a really sweet gal with a lot of real country vocal talent.

i don’t think it matters if kellie pickler is acting. if she’s not acting, she needs help. if she IS acting, she ought to be ashamed of herself for trying to make stupid look funny. stupid is not funny. clueless is not funny. she can sing and she looks good, but when those go, what will be left? stupid won’t pick up the slack. big jugs will only last so long.

I gotta agree with you, Peter, on country not being the most motivating music, even though it’s pretty much all I listen to. A couple of the songs Pierce mentioned are decent motivators, though.

Oh my Buddha - that Kelli Pickler clip is horrible. “I thought Europe was a country.” This isn’t a lack of knowledge, which happens to some smart people with limited backgrounds and education. I am sure we all know a few people who are smart but don’t know lots of facts. But here she is in front of a huge audience and she says some really dumb things. Even those of modest intelligence have learned to cover their tracks by her age. It’s not a demonstration of innocence to reveal how uninformed and dumb we are. It’s just dumb.
That’s one of my criticisms about some parts of country music. There are artists who wear their ignorance and even their lack of intelligence like a medal. That’s just wrong. Education is important. Same goes for that tired subgenre of songs about men and women who are sad about losing a romantic interest because of bad behavior. Don’t whine about it after the fact, just change and be a better person. Stop acting like you are fifteen.
Ok, rant over. Sorry to say it but she seems to want us to know; Kelli Pickler is dumb as a box of rocks.

kellie pickler was obviously just doing that as an act, as she has said, she loves to get attention.
as for songs that motivate me, days go by by keith urban is probably at the top of my list

oh, she wants people to think it’s an act. that way, she can be stupid and still be thought of as…well, not stupid.
besides, if she’s acting, why doesn’t she just be a good role model and act SMART? you know, have a little knowledge about the world around you, about other countries, about…well, anything. if it’s so easy and obvious to act stupid, why not do the right thing and act SMART?
i don’t even think musicians or celebrities should necessarily be good role models–i just think holding your ignorance or sheer stupidity up as a beacon is unacceptable. she is an adult and should know better, for God’s sake.

Kellie is a comedienne. If she wants to make comedy out of certain stereotypes that people might label her than why shouldn’t she. Isn’t that what comediennes do? I find Kellie’s wit quite funny and charming at the same time. Seeing how over 10 million people tuned in to watch Kellie, giving this show its highest ratings in history, it seems I’m not alone. But then I guess most people in America have a sense of humor unlike some of you….

acting stupid isn’t funny. why is that funny? where in the world has she said she’s a ‘comedienne’?
but being ignorant is no shame. being stupid, however, is a shame. and pretending that 10 million people watching her is somehow validation is truly delusional. i like her music just fine, but find no reason to excuse her…well, stupidity. it’s pitiful and it’s really nothing to laugh about or excuse.

So she’s perpetuating the blonde stereotype on a full-time basis as a comedy routine? That just might be the most genius marketing spin/PC speak I’ve ever heard…
