- Kye Fleming, Mark D. Sanders and Tammy Wynette were inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, which also honored Toby Keith, Craig Wiseman, and Taylor Swift on Sunday night. CMT recapped the event.
- Ashley Gorley, a co-writer behind Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This,” Brad Paisley and Keith Urban’s “Start A Band” and Darius Rucker’s “It Won’t Be Like This For Long,” won the songwriter of the year award at the ASCAP Country Music Awards yesterday.
- Ricky Skaggs, Craig Morgan, and Tracy Lawrence were among the winners at last Thursday’s Inspirational Country Music Awards.
- Watch Wade Bowen’s new video for the song “Trouble.”
- The Gobblers Knob and High Noon Saloon have good things to say about Ronnie Fauss‘ new, three-song EP I Can’t Make You Happy.
- Trace Adkins on the return of Garth Brooks:
“It sure was nice for the rest of us while it lasted,” Trace laughs, adding, “We got a little more of the consumer money … Now Garth’s going to come back and eat it all up, and I’ll have to get a real job again. Thanks a lot, Garth!”
- Pete Molinari talks about genres, influences, and his recent EP of classic country covers with The Jordanaires in a Q&A with American Songwriter. (MySpace)
- Austin Music Source’s Michael Corcoran on Lyle Lovett’s new record:
It’s as if Lovett, who went seven prime years (1996- 2003) without releasing an album of new material, still has writer’s block, but he’s making albums anyway. It doesn’t help that the singer’s once-pristine vocals sound thin and nasally at spots. And yet a late CD coupling of David Ball’s “Don’t You Think I Feel It Too” and Bell’s “Sun and Moon and Stars,” stirred by exquisite piano and violin, save the album and make the subsequent cover of Van Zandt’s “Loretta” sound more like the third part of a trilogy than a lazy remake.
- Top 10 Ways You Can Know a Country Album Sucks Without Listening to It
- Alt-512 Music Musing posted the set list to a Charlie Robison house concert, that the party’s host graciously allowed us to attend, on Sunday. Listen to a recording of “My Brother and Me” from the concert.
- Music Fog videos:
- The A Truer Sound blogger, who has no illusions of objectivity when it comes to the Wrinkle Neck Mules, comments on his most anticipated release of the year, Let The Lead Fly:
[...] if you are a fan of classic alt-country like Uncle Tupelo & Son Volt, a fan of good old fashioned country rock like the Byrds and The Burritos, a fan of bluegrass and country that’s not afraid to rock, or just a fan of damn good music in general…..this album is for you.
- Country Music Tattle Tale is giving away two autographed copies of Tommy Cash’s album Fade to Black.
- Taylor Swift and Taylor guitars teamed up to introduce the new Taylor Swift Baby Taylor.
- Nathan Rabin covered Keith Whitley in this week’s Nashville or Bust column:
[...] Whitley sells every nostalgia-choked emotion. That’s his genius; he could break your heart with a great song like “I Never Go Around Mirrors,” but he could also manipulate emotions and tug on the heartstrings with treacly ditties unworthy of his talent.
- Ten NPR staffers shared their favorite Dolly Parton songs.
- Quotable Country – 10/19/09 Edition
- Garth Brooks listed a few artists’ music fans can expect him to showcase during his Las Vegas shows:
Brooks is almost always upbeat, but his eyes light up when he talks about the music he loves and plans to showcase. He rattled off a dozen names, most from the 1960s and ’70s. Greats like Bob Seeger, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Randy Travis, Cat Stevens, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Rush and “all these real obscure things.”
- The Boot posted 11 Questions with Miranda Lambert.
- The new Joe Nichols disc will contain a remix of “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” by Colt Ford. (Listen on MySpace)
- The Wall Street Journal posted excerpts from interviews with Tim McGraw:
How has your interaction with fans changed? A lot of people think online tools are the solution for getting people more engaged in the music.
I think it’s quite the opposite. I think it erodes the magic of what you do for a living. For me, I feel like there’s an attention span thing. If somebody doesn’t see your face on the iPhone, all of a sudden you’re not there anymore. If they didn’t Twitter today, they must be retired. At the same time, you can’t be completely old school. There’s a place to embrace both. When I’m on stage or I’m making a record, that’s my contact. I don’t know how to connect any other way. - The 9513’s Karlie Justus on Jamey Johnson’s recent NC State Fair performance:
[Jamey's] concert was…the best I’ve ever seen. Made me really, really excited about country music. I’ve seen him twice before but it was almost like going to church. A super nice guy too, and it was fascinating listening him talk to Dale Earnhardt’s son. He was about to cry when he gave him that guitar. The new stuff his did was great–one in particular, about a guitar hanging up in a pawn shop. I could go on. Also, apparently him and Kellie Pickler are good friends? He talked about her for awhile, and then sang us her favorite Merle Haggard song. One I’d never even heard before, which is a feat after growing up with my Haggard-obsessed dad. He said, ‘Forgive me if I forget some of these words, but I know you won’t know them anyway.’” - Watch Ralph Stanley perform “Gloryland,” “Turn Back, Turn Back,” and “Amazing Grace” a capella in NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

If I were knowledgeable about country music, I’d ask you to correct the spelling of “Jordanaires.”

Corrected. You may want to let the folks at American Songwriter know that they’ve spelled it wrong, too.

Has the Randy Kohrs album actually been released? My dealer is saying it’s been shelved, and the Amazon link above says discontinued.

Wow, Karlie has become a dyed in the wool, starry eyed Jamey Johnson fangurl! Good show! The part about Jamey and Kellie Pickler is a bit disconcerting though, unless it leads to some classic country style duets! Could they be the next Conway & Loretta, or George & Tammy? Hmmm…..
I’m still amazed that Curb is actually releasing a Bomshel album at all. Its too bad Amy Dalley didn’t get the same courtesy at the time “Men Don’t Change” was on the charts.
I disagree with Trailer’s contention that just because an album gets a positive review at Roughstock that it likely sucks! Pretty much every album reviewed there gets a positive review, even if its from Colt Ford! So depending on the album reviewed it may indeed not suck, but there’s just no way to be sure….

Opry Alert! Tonight’s Opry will feature the Eli Young Band, James Otto, and Darryl Worley along with the “Legends”. There is a gap in Bill Anderson’s segment which means a last minute mystery guest will be recruited! Hmmm…

“Has the Randy Kohrs album actually been released?”
I don’t think so. Dunno about “shelved” or “discontinued,” though – probably just delayed. I’ll see what I can find out.
The Sam Bush album, by the way, is outstanding. See http://www.nashvillescene.com/events/music-city-roots-feat-sam-bush-mike-farris-and-miss-tess-and-the-bon-ton-parade-324324/ . And the Grasstowne entry is a solid one, too. Weird to see Foggy Mountain Banjo reissued yet again; I hadn’t noticed its previous incarnation going out of print…

FYI, Joe Nichols new album is available for streaming a week before it’s release on Rhapsody.
I still cant get over how awesome “Goodbye To An Old Friend of Mine” is. George Jones would be proud to record that. Might be the best song to come out of Nashville this year.

We just got word that the Randy Kohrs album has been rescheduled for January 12th.

Wonder if Karlie remembers any of the words to that Haggard song that she hadn’t heard before? I’d love to know what it was…
October 21, 2009 at 2:52 pm Permalink
Hey Mike – I looked it up after the show and it was “You Take Me For Granted,” which was actually a number one hit for the Hag in 1982.
October 21, 2009 at 3:47 pm Permalink
Thanks, Karlie. That’s a great song and is included on the “Down Every Road” boxset.
My new goal is to get my picture taken with Jamey in some various stage of disrepair.

Holy cow, you hadn’t heard “You Take Me For Granted?!” Good call for Kellie!
October 21, 2009 at 7:20 pm Permalink
Sadly I hadn’t. Went back to my iPod and realized I have it on there but must have skipped over it all this time. Definitely a great song.
