Train Songs, Rock And Roll Definitive 200, And Tillis Exhibit Honors Singers
- Cricket has a nice list of train songs going on over at Hardcore Troubadours. Check it out, you might find some you haven’t heard before.
- Visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and browse through what they consider the Definitive 200 albums of the rock era (a few country albums make the list). Afterwards drop by Country Universe and let them know how many of the albums you have in your collection.
- The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum opened an exhibit to honor the careers of Mel and Pam Tillis (father and daughter). “It’s All Relative: Mel and Pam Tillis” will be open until June.
Exhibit highlights include original stage costumes designed by Nashville couturier Manuel Cuevas, including Mel Tillis’ blue and orange suit inspired by his alma mater, the University of Florida, and its Gators football team; and Pam Tillis’ rhinestone-studded bolero jacket, a garment that she wore often onstage.
- Randy Travis performed at Billy Bob’s for the first time in over fifteen years. Despite being drowned out by the band a few times and the audience at other times, he put on a great show.
The final songs of the two-hour show were so well-known that Travis and company turned the segment into a big country sing-along, with the house lights up and everyone joining on his first hit, On The Other Hand.
- Charlie Louvin has been getting a lot of lovin’ lately. I recently read an interview with Charlie in last month’s American Songwriter, then yesterday NPR posted an audio review of his newest album with a few samples from his songs intertwined, and today HickoryWind posted a piece about him.
- The Miranda Lambert publicity train has been going full steam ahead as of late. She recently shot the video for the first single, “Famous in a Small Town,” off her latest album. The single will hit radio on March 19 with the video debut following right behind it. “The song reflects Lambert’s own experience growing up in the small town of Lindale, Texas.”
- If you’re in Austin for SXSW you might want to consider stopping by Waterloo Ice House on the 17th for Americana Roots Showcase. It’s completely free, so you can’t complain that it costs too much. I’d like to go myself, but you know, I got tickets to see Willie, Merle, and Ray.

Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
