Tracklist For Gary Allan’s New Album, Get Off On The Pain

Jim Malec | November 12th, 2009 Email Share

get-off-on-the-painWe just received an Advance for Gary Allan’s upcoming (eighth) studio album, Get Off On The Pain, which is rumored to have a February 2010 release. The disc features 10 songs (tentatively, as is always the case with pre-issue tracklists), including Allan’s current single “Today.” CMT is reporting that Allan wrote or co-wrote five of the tracks. The title cut was chosen as the name for Allan’s 2009 tour.

After a handful of initial listens, my early read is that this is a significant return to form for Allan after 2007’s disappointing Living Hard. More details and a review to come as we approach release date.

Gary Allan – Get Off On The Pain Tracklist:

1. “Get Off On The Pain”
2. “I Think I’ve Had Enough”
3. “Today”
4. “That Ain’t Gonna Fly”
5. “Kiss Me When I’m Down”
6. “We Fly By Night”
7. “When You Give Yourself Away”
8. “Along The Way”
9. “She Gets Me”
10. “No Regrets”

He’s been opening his shows lately with “Get Off On the Pain.” If that song is any indication, I expect it to be a pretty good album.

It’s kind of a cringe-inducing title, so I’m glad to hear the album itself isn’t.

And “Today” is pretty cringe inducing too.

I don’t hate “Today,” but it’s among the weakest (if not THE weakest) of the tracks.

Well, I technically don’t hate “Today” either, I guess. I just think the only thing that helps it is Allan’s voice, but I could imagine it fitting quite neatly on a Rascal Flatts album. I’m glad to learn that it’s one of the weakest songs on the album though.

Living Hard was a disappointment? According to you, maybe. I have a copy of Get Off On The Pain, and it sounds similar to LH, which was a solid album.

Living hard was unsuccessful commercially. Is this along the lines of Smoke Rings in the Dark or is that too much to wish for?

Living Hard is an amazing album….disappointing??? Seriously? No. His new album has some tracks on it that are spectacular and “that ain’t gonna fly” or “get off on the pain” will be a hit! Country? you bet your butt its country!!! :)

Not everyone will agree or disagree about whether an album is “disappointing” but there is general consensus that Living Hard falls short of the mark set by a number of Allan’s releases. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad album.

I’d also mind you that my name is on the byline of this post, which means the contents of this post should be treated as my opinion.

I also really like the “Living Hard” album. it was what really hooked me as a fan of his.

Living Hard, disappointing? Matter of opinion.. LH is my fav Gary CD.. As for his new release “Today”, I love it!! But then I’m a true junkie so I could listen to him sing the phonebook…

Living Hard was disappointing? Hmmm…I missed something somewhere! Those of us who are true Gary fans appreciate ALL of his work! Seems funny to me the songs off that album are all hits at his concerts and everyone knows the words to the songs…so no, I would not say it was disapointing!

I’m calling BS on this. No, true Gary Allan fans are free to dislike parts of his repertoire. I’m no less a Gary Allan fan than you because I don’t care for Living Hard. I wouldn’t say someone’s less of a fan than me for disliking, say, Used Heart For Sale.
Being a true fan doesn’t mean thinking they can do no wrong.

As I could I. But I’d rather listen to him sing He Can’t Quit Her.

I have a real appreciation for Allan’s vocal ability and considered myself a true fan but have to agree with the author not so much for the songs of late that Allan has been releasing. While most fans might blame Allan…. I’m going to lay the blame at the feet of his label. The biggest disappointment has also been with the editing. Somehow we are losing the ability to really discern Allan’s unique vocals from the overdone instrumentals. My plans are to purchase his new cd as always, but gotta say that Livin Hard has not had much play time. Not looking forward to a repeat but will try and keep an open mind.

Ditto with Vicki. General consensus of who? The industry that rarely promotes or gives him any credit? Money oriented bean counters? His fans at his concerts think otherwise and first time attenders are blown away. He co-wrote 6 of the 11 tracks on L.H. plus is a talented musician and not just a singer. I share triple the number of GA songs in my character education groups with clients (including two from LH) than any other CMA nominee or “country” artist. Gary stayed country when most others went pop (note the steel guitar and fiddler at his concerts) and sings about what matters most to him and us. Nashville needs to wake up and take notice of him. I know of no other artist that bares his soul to his fans like Gary. Looking around at his concerts (I’ve been to 17, 4 this year), he’s brought a younger crowd to the industry because of LH that otherwise would not be listening and saved lives in the process. Rascal Flatts singing “Today”. Ewww.

Gary allan has always penned or chosen the songs that have really let fans into his feelings and soul and you can’t beat any of Gary allans music and I think today fits magically within the true country range that Gary has always deliverd can’t wait for the CD release. And rascal flats. Bad idea

I saw Gary Allan Nov. 13 in Atlanta, GA, at The Tabernacle. I too, am a highway junkie, and see Gary perform every chance I get. Gary opened with “Get Off On The Pain”, and alson played “Today”. The rest of his set was older stuff that I appreciated hearing. I’ve heard him sing “She Gets Me”, and following in true Gary Allan form, it’s a soul-searcher. Gary has the ability to bare his soul to his listeners, giving them the opportunity to see his vulnerable side. He also has the ability to let you know he does give a $h!P. The man is a creative genius, who refuses to let industry standards dictate his style. For that, I respect him more than any other artist in any genre of music.

I truly believe Gary Allan is so underrated! I’ve always enjoyed his music(what little country radio plays)Then I saw him in concert and OMG! Its a wonderful thing when they can actually sound better in person than the cd! The songs that have never been released or recorded that he sings in concert are priceless! I’m a true Junkie and will be seeing him for many years to come. If you’ve never seen him in concert, do it!!!!!

I don’t know what you were listening to, but Living Hard was a rockin CD. My fave GA to date. Get Off On The Pain is gonna be another great one, if the 2 songs I’ve heard are any indication!

Gary is a man whore. He goes from city to city picking up on various woman and hooking up with them like some 80’s rock star. Hardly the role model I want to aspire to be. I have witnessed this in person.

Well, I certainly don’t want to believe THAT post. I’ve never heard that before so his role model – ability is not at stake. I’ve been a Junkie for many years. So, why don’t you keep this to yourself if you are concerned about what kind of role model he is. You are the only one sayong this shit. It’s about the music anyway. He’s about the music – not trying to be some role model. He’s not some “pop sensation.” He’s a hard-rocking county music man with mega talent.

I agree with LENA! I’ve never heard those things before and I’m a huge Gary fan. If something like that really happened I’m sure we’d all know about it. I’m not going to take the word of some creep that claims they’ve seen it in person. It’s a bit sketchy and annoying. I still love Gary and can’t wait to see him in concert!

A large part of the problem with that whole post is that most of Gary’s fans are grown ups. We aren’t really looking for role models, especially not in our music.

I couldn’t possibly give less of a crap who any musician I don’t know personally sleeps with. It has literally no bearing on my relationship with his music.

I don’t know if Gary Allan is a man-whore or if someone is just spreading lies. It doesn’t matter too much to me, though, because right now I am too preoccupied with worrying about how many affairs Tiger Woods may or may not have had. So Gary is off the hook, at least for now.

My role models are only people I know, not musicians/artists or any sort of celebrity.

I always thought of people who looked to celebrities as role models as kind of pathetic actually. Instead of choosing someone like Lincoln, Washington or Grant, they pick someone who shakes their ass for a living.

I’m just joining the choir here, but as long as Gary doesn’t pull a Chesney and use the “figures” to prove his manhood, I don’t care how he does or doesn’t conduct himself. Celebrities are people, and people have their reasons for everything. It’s not for me to judge.
