Trace Adkins Hits Gold For Honky Tonk Badonkadonk And Doug Supernaw Hits…Some Pot

  • Trace Adkins has received his first Gold certification for ringtone sales, which means he’s sold in excess of 500,000 for one ringtone. The track that brought about this great honor is none other than “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”
  • Joe Ely released a new album last Tuesday, Happy Songs from Rattlesnake Gulch. Austin360 does a great job taking a look back across his vast career.

A guitar, a song and a story: Ely’s been keeping to that simple yet endlessly mutable formula for more than 30 years. “Bonfire of Roadmaps” collects nearly 200 pages of ruminations on music, the road and life during wartime (the two Gulf wars, to be specific).

“In the ’60s, I started keeping a notebook in my back pocket, writing down ideas and sketches,” Ely says. “I didn’t have a camera, so that was the way I kept a record of traveling all around.”

I took a listen to his latest album, and while some of the songs were ok, I wouldn’t consider it “my cup of tea.”

  • I’ve listened to some of Doug Supernaw’s music and enjoyed most of it, but other that I didn’t know anything about the guy. However, since his heyday he’s been quite the outlaw. He’s been arrested more than a few times, has bipolar disorder, and suffers from paranoia. HoustonPress does a great job documenting all of Supernaw’s antics in an article that sucks you in. They couldn’t reach anyone who would talk about Supernaw, or Supernaw himself, so they’ve based their research off of news archives and such.

Supernaw served as his own attorney on the Amarillo pot bust case. On the stand, he freely admitted to smoking pot and even offered up his favored method for doing so. “I don’t buy rolling papers,” Supernaw told the court. “I do smoke off the can when I get the opportunity.” He also warbled a few bars of the Los Lonely Boys hit “Heaven” from the stand. He was convicted and sentenced to 115 days in jail, but was released for time served.

  • An interview with Jim Lauderdale in which he discusses how he got into bluegrass and his songwriting.
  • Willie Nelson, Kinky Friedman, and Jessica Simpson will be performing with a symphony and a limited version of the Cirque du Soleil show in Dallas. It sounds like an odd combination, but it’ll provide entertainment for an audience with a broad range of interests. Willie has been known to perform with artists of different genres which makes it no surprise to hear that he’s currently working on a song and film with Mariah Carey.

Willie is the duet king, isn’t he? The Mariah Carey thing is interesting; for her new movie, “Tennessee.” After her Glitter experience, I am surprised she wants to try again. Country Mariah? Oh, well, with Willie on the soundtrack, that will be good, for sure.

He definitely is the duet king, I don’t see how most of his duets work, much less become hits. What do you think has been his strangest duet to date?

I hope Doug will get the help he needs but it may be to late.
