Toby Keith Tops The Charts With Big Dog Daddy

  • The Academy of Country Music honored Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Don Williams, Buck Owens, Harlan Howard, and music executive Jack Lameier yesterday at Marty Stuart’s “Sparkle and Twang: Marty Stuart’s American Musical Odyssey” exhibit. About 250 people were present for the event, including Tracy Lawrence and Hal Ketchum.
  • The recently released Big Dog Daddy album from Toby Keith topped the charts at No. 1. It’s his fifth album to reach number one status on the Top Country Albums.
  • On July 8 Charlie Louvin is going to give a brief performance at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater. He’ll also premiere a music video for the song “Ira”, a tribute to his brother, off his latest album. That will be the same weekend that he turns 80.
  • Gretchen Wilson and Billy Ray Cyrus’s daughter have apparently become friends. Wilson will have a small part in one of her shows, Hannah Montana. She says then she’ll “be something” to her daughter, who watches the show “about 15 times a day.”
  • MySpace: Check out Oliver Buck. He lists Johnny Cash, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Skip James, The Band, and Woody Guthrie as influences. I like “Road to Nowhere”.
  • On this day in 1936 Kris Kristofferson was born, so a big Happy Birthday goes out to him and may he have many more to come.
  • UPDATE: I never see these Country Weekly features until after I post the news roundup, but David Scarlett has a must read Q&A with Chris Ledoux’s sons and long time guitarist, Mark Sissel.

When we unleashed the bull the first time in Salt Lake City at the event center, oh my God…I could barely stay upright, let alone play. It was during “For Your Love.” It’s a brand new set, the first time it’s ever been seen…and nobody knows there’s a bucking machine in there. Nobody knows what’s gonna happen. And the thing rises up out of there, covered up you know? And the crowd’s standing up…and you could just feel it all well up…and they don’t know what’s goin’ on. Chris is gone for a second, then he comes back out and he’s got a ridin’ glove and chaps on…and he’s crawlin’ up there on top of the risers…and this thing’s comin’ up out of there…and they’re still not sure what’s goin’ on. Then he gets up on top and he starts pullin’ his hand into the rigging…and then they figure it out. And I mean, it was frightening.
