Toby Keith – “She’s A Hottie”
Songwriters: Bobby Pinson, Toby Keith
If the title of the song doesn’t clue you in, let me fill in the blank: “She’s A Hottie” is dreadful! It’s the only new song on Toby Keith’s yet to be released greatest hits album that will fullfill his contract obligation to Universal Music Group. While it would be mildly funny, if not a bit childish, to pass this awful dreck off as a parting shot, Keith’s label, Show Dog Records, is handling the promotion of the single.
Toby Keith is a top notch artist and can record ballads with the best of them and he has the ability to record the uptempo numbers, but too often, they rely too heavily on infectious novelties and completely forgo any semblance of substance. Take the hook of this song for example, “She’s a hottie, she’s a hottie, she’s got a smokin’ little body.” The rest of the song doesn’t fare much better. “Hey Mister! Ya, I kissed her! Son! You ought to see her sister!!!”
If the lyric weren’t bad enough, the production sounds like a kid who got a new toy and spent a couple of hours putting something together that he thought sounded cool. “I gotta have a few diggy diggys in there, some naughty hotties would be sweet, and make him talk in a low voice right there and I’ll distort it to make it sound cooler. Perfect!”
Fortunately, we can–hopefully–look forward to the new material he’s putting out later this year, including a new studio album and a soundtrack for the movie he’s filming with Willie Nelson based on their song, “Beer For My Horses.”

I’m a HUGE Toby fan, but even I wasn’t impressed with this song. He just has the capability to do so much better!
March 9, 2008 at 11:25 am Permalink
It kind of sounds like Toby is politely giving UMG “the one in the middle” in Sarah Johns speak. Toby knows he can put out a lone crap single and it won’t affect his career one bit being a minor blip at best. Toby’s singles are usually some of the better music on Top 40 Country Muzak stations so hopefully this single will have a short chart shelf life…..
PS – Sounds like it would have been the perfect title song for the horrid Paris Hilton flick “The Hottie and the Nottie” that grossed almost nothing in the handful of theaters that had the poor judgement to screen it.

I’ve heard this song twice and I have to agree.. its awful. Toby has taken a lot of steps backwards in the past few years. If and “up and comer” tried to pitch this stuff, they’d be shot down quickly. I thought that “Im gonna get my drink on” sounded like a bad outtake, too..
Why do the big guys get to have hits like this?

I miss the pre- 9/11 Toby Keith- since 9/11 he has been selfish, lazy and offend insulting. Dixie Chicks crap aside, he better singer and songwriter than he is projecting. Forget being an image and start being a man- then you will make great songs
March 9, 2008 at 1:14 pm Permalink
Toby Keith is a top notch artist? You guys have more sense then that. Keith has never done anything in his career that can be classified as top notch. He’s been working hokum like “Hottie” his whole career.
March 9, 2008 at 1:25 pm Permalink
Baron, he’s recorded some great material and has the vocal talent to keep up with anyone, but the hokey stuff usually gets top billing for some reason. As far as producing good albums on a consistent basis, he may not qualify as top notch, but I think he has the talent to be considered top notch. Just listen to some of the ballads that get buried on his albums.
March 9, 2008 at 1:29 pm Permalink
“How Do You Like Me Now!?” and “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” are great country songs, he hasn’t been like this is whole career!
When you hear him say the comments about putting the first 12 songs he writes straight onto the album though you think “What the heck, Toby! Put some effort into it!”
March 9, 2008 at 3:09 pm Permalink
Not buying it. If I want a great ballad I’ll go Strait, Jackson or Tritt…Toby is the Kid Rock of country.
March 9, 2008 at 4:00 pm Permalink
This has to be the worst song he has done. I thought the title cut on his last cd “Big Dog Daddy” was terrible this is ten times worse that that one.
March 9, 2008 at 5:55 pm Permalink
Baron,
“The Kid Rock of country?” C’mon now. It’s great to be opinionated about artists you don’t like but what, really, seperates Tritt from Toby Keith? Both like ‘rocky’ country.
March 9, 2008 at 7:22 pm Permalink
Matt, Man I’m all for country-rock (from Gram Parsons to Lynyrd Skynyrd) but there is no way you can put Toby Kieth up with Tritt. Where Corn Don’t Grow and This One’s Gonna Hurt You (For a Long, Long Time) against anything Keith has done.
March 9, 2008 at 9:25 pm Permalink
It’s just a shame that the release of this shortened the shelf life of a good song like “Get My Drink On.”
March 10, 2008 at 6:39 am Permalink
“This One’s Gonna Hurt You (For a Long, Long Time)” wasn’t country-rock, it was country.
I’ll reserve judgment on Keith pending the new CD on Show Dog. Since Toby has been one of the more consistantly good artists over the last 10+ years, I suspect that there is more good material to come
March 10, 2008 at 7:31 am Permalink
Paul, I was referring to Tritt’s ballads which were cited as his strong point.
March 10, 2008 at 7:31 am Permalink
I am sorry but I have to agree with Baron — I was a fan of Toby in the early years – but then for some reason I just feel that he sold out and I just did not like his stuff anymore, but as I said this is my opinion
March 10, 2008 at 7:32 am Permalink
er…Keith’s strong point I mean…and how Tritt compared to those.
March 10, 2008 at 8:04 am Permalink
Keith did a great duet with Merle Haggard on Chicago Wind and his album from 2000, How Do You Like Me Now, is chock full of good material and worthy performances. “Walk It Off” is about all I cared for from his last album, which I would have placed among the most disappointing of 2007, but I still maintain that the talent exists.
March 10, 2008 at 10:49 am Permalink
I personally am all set with Toby Keith. His music has become predictable and boring (Rocking song or not). Not to mention every time I see him perform live on TV he has a blank look on his face… is he better in person?
March 10, 2008 at 11:28 am Permalink
Couldn’t help but scrunch up my nose at this tune. I expect more from Toby as far as songwriting goes; he has the talent but seems to be wasting it with songs like this one. I’m surprised he didn’t say she had it going on like Donkey Kong … forgot, that line was already taken. @@ But wait, watch it be embraced by all genres’ like Trace’s “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”.
I would like to add to MATT: Yes, TK always has that blank look on his face. My husband and I, however, saw him in concert last summer (for the first time) and were greatly disappointed. Not so much at his performace but what he would say in between songs.@@ We weren’t too impressed with his comments on drugs and threesomes backstage.
March 11, 2008 at 7:17 am Permalink
ok, i listened to this. i admit it.
did they have some sort of contest to find a third-grader that could write a country hit? ’cause that’s what this sounds like. not to insult third-graders.
March 11, 2008 at 11:30 pm Permalink
I’ll agree that Toby’s got talent–somewhere in there. His earlier stuff is clearly superior. Somewhere around the time he appointed himself the official singer of sappy soldier ballads and “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” remakes he lost all of my respect, though.
If he has talent, but continues to taint it by dragging it through the mud, what kind of artist does that make him? As the old adage goes, use it or lose it.
Although he has talent to match some of country’s greats, his refusal to embrace it puts him at the bottom of the heap artistically.

I actually really liked some of Toby’s earlier stuff. However, that all changed when he started singing about lighting up someone’s world like the 4th of July, and naming his albums things like – “Shock N Y’all,” “White Trash With Money,” and “Big Dog Daddy.” Then the huge ego kicked in, and he came out with horribly awful videos like “A Little Too Late” and songs with great messages like “Get Drunk and Be Somebody” and “Running Block.”
I actually went to a Toby Keith concert last summer to see Miranda Lambert open for him. I stuck around for about 4 of Toby’s songs just out of curiosity. I was amazed (and not in a good way). The beginning was pretty much a 15 minute Ford truck commercial! Then he came out with these glitzy back up dancers and just stood there with his guitar, didn’t move and sang. It was all very bizarre.
March 12, 2008 at 2:38 pm Permalink
Guess I’ll be the one lone dissenter here and say that I like this song. Sure the lyrics are trite but it’s a stompin’ little tune. I love the guitar & strings at the beginning and how the drums slip in; the band is pretty smoking throughout after that. I do wish he could’ve sung about something else but what the hey.

I hate when an established star dumps a song on radio that he knows they have to play at first but is a piece of hoo ha.

I liked the song. Call it and me what you want, but it wont change my opinion. I will pick it up as soon as I can.
PS: And how is calling Toby Kieth the Kid Rock of country an insult. I like them both. You can laugh at them all the way to the bank. I suppose you all know all about rocket science and brain surgery as well. Forgive me is I am mistaken and any of you have hit songs out.

Obviously everyone is having a great Toby-bashing time, but there are many, many of us who thing this song is great. Even if you don’t appreciate the catchy refrain, and the rhyming, and the music, how can you not love Toby’s voice on that last verse.

YOU GUYS ARE DEMENTED. THIS IS A BANGIN’ SONG!! YOU’RE JUST JEALOUS THAT YOU DIDN’T WRITE IT. TOBY KEITH IS NOW AND FOREVER WILL BE THE KING OF KOUNTRY!! I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THOSE OF YOU THAT SAY YOU ARE TOBY FANS, THEN YOU GO TRASHIN’ HIS SONGS. I FEEL BAD FOR YOU. OH,AND ROCK IT OUT RUTH, AND STEVE FOR KNOWING WHAT REAL COUNTRY IS. :)
March 26, 2008 at 11:37 am Permalink
I would have disagreed, but all the capitalization has convinced me!
March 26, 2008 at 11:39 am Permalink
I don’t even hat this song. I like to see Toby have fun. However, the “you’re just jealous” argument is really wearing thin with me. Seriously, isn’t that a phrase we used in Kindergarten or something? I highly doubt that I’m jealous of not writing every song I dislike. The logic just isn’t there. Why would I be jealous that I didn’t write a crappy song?
Also, just because one might be a fan of someone, it doesn’t mean that he/she is required to like every single song of that artist. We’re fans, not cattle.
March 26, 2008 at 11:57 am Permalink
Thank you Leann – for being the voice of reason – we do not have to like every song by every person – and why did Carley feel the need to yell at us because we do not like the song?
March 26, 2008 at 12:28 pm Permalink
Sorry, I meant “hate”, not “hat”. Then again, it’s true that I don’t hat this song either.
March 26, 2008 at 2:34 pm Permalink
I would like to put a hat on this song, and perhaps some boots as well.
March 26, 2008 at 8:34 pm Permalink
I am a professional DJ and whether it is a bad song or not, I get a massive amount of requests for this song every weekend by girls that some may consider “Hottie’s” On a more personal note Love Toby Keith and most of his music including this song. Its catchy, but I must agree it will probably not be around for very long. Perhaps he will replace this song with something more mature like “one two,,,,my belt buckle and my boots” and if so, as long as it sounds good I’ll play it, get requests for it, and like it. When it comes to music one should hold no prejudices…. If it sounds good (even though it may be a bit immature)to you, put away your prejudices and move on.

Wow, I have read all your comments of this silly lil song. I am shocked non of you liked it just a lil bit?
Well I am here to say I do like it.. Im 53 and over weight as most my age. This song brought back sweet memories for me of when i was in that string bikini and was a true HOTTIE.
So Toby cant please all the people all the time. But he has brought a smile to me… so who cares about the rest right? hahaha
You go for it Toby… I love your new lil silly song
April 6, 2008 at 2:08 pm Permalink
This song makes me turn up the volume in my truck (Yes, I drive a 93 Ford F150) and sing along at the top of my voice! It is catchy and cute and since I’m on my way back to being a HOTTIE, it has become part of my inspiration to keep losing weight and toning up. There are very few singles out there today that make me want to go buy somebody’s album, this is one of them. Hmmmm, now about that string bikini and the barbed wire tat……… nah think I’ll skip those and just go for HOTTIE. Wish me luck!

I’m amazed how some fans will like any song their favorite puts out. I have my favorites too but there have been times I questioned why in world did they record a song like that.

Sarah, Im with you. Good Luck on your road back to that hottie stage.
As for CCF? Toby isnt my favorite. But maybe its just a girl thing? hahha
That’s why we all live in the great USA we can disagree on a subjust and not have to kill each other over it… hahaha

I absolutely love the song!! It has a great beat and is fun to sing along with. Songs are like movies they are best when they are fiction. I think this song will go far and Toby rocks!! He is so much better to me when he has upbeat songs kinda like Tim McGraw before Faith Hill.

i loved the song!!! i think that its awesome and i love to blare it in my car!
i think its pretty funny that people are gunna post how much the hate it..
haha get over it..its a damn song

I loved the song also! I love his videos, his sarcasm and his big grin! Every country singer is allowed to have their ballads and their fun songs. Listen to Brad Paisley’s “check you for ticks” I think thats the title. Its just a fun song to listen to as is Toby’s. Im with the others on it being motivational. I might just buy me a cowboy hat too. As for the barbwire tat. I’ll stick to butterflies. lol!

Toby is the Kid Rock of country.
Who is his Joe C? Long live Joe C.
Toby Keith, like many Americans, is just a guy who likes money. Nothing wrong with that. He pays attention to the kinds of songs his fans like, which are songs heavy on the fun factor and the rest doesn’t matter.
I’m not exactly sure when he started thinking more about market research than music but it might have been about the time he learned he was able to polarize fans by saying silly things about the Dixie Chicks. Most thinking people understand that in America, everyone is protected by the same freedoms and the DCs have a right to their opinion just like Toby does. What Toby seemed to learn is that there are plenty of non-thinking Country fans and he became their instant hero. He’s just making a buck or two off those people.
Watch and see how his music changes if the country mood changes in the next presidential election.

Hey, I think this song is fun! Does everything have to be about cryin’ in your beer, she done me wrong and I deserve it – or ain’t my outfits cute, and God?
You can dance to this song. And sometimes a girl just wants to dance to something other than Taylor Swift’s boy problems.

Lighten up! The Ding-a-Ling song wasn’t a musical wonder either. And neither was A Boy Named Sue. I’ve seen this “Hottie” girl out in the bars with the guy who would bring her. How about you? lol
