Taylor Swift does sound like amateur karaoke live, but if she'd take voice and singing lessons it would likely improve considerably. It sounds like she's just unaware of how important taking full breaths and pushing from the diaphram are when performing.

Benny, as Loveless fan, I do feel the need to reply to you. But you're right--- we do have some fans that won't accept critiscm. I hope you don't label PL's entire fan base that way, I assure you that's not the case for everyone :) And I won't argue back and forth all day about her with you (unless you try to insist something about her that's entirely off the wall). I'll actually agree with you on all your points. The video for "Busted" is not one of my favorites.

That video just screams to me "do not take the song as a reflection on anything real, especially not anything going on right now."

I hesitate to comment because Loveless has some fans that can't accept critiscm and will spend all day arguing back and forth about her. So, first and foremost, I love Patty Loveless. She's great. This is simply my opinion.

Loveless' "Busted" video is by far my least favorite video she's ever made. Yes, it's incredibly creative and well thought. But she barely touched on the main actual aspect of the song itself, which was a coal mining family (such as the one she grew up in). As the only woman in history to cover such coveted original lyrics (that were given directly to her husband from the writer), I would have thought she would have somewhat gone along with that in the story of the video. I was disappointed with the video, but hey, opinions are what makes the world go round.

@Brady - of course, you are right about how many types of songs were recorded over and over way back when (emphasis on "way back when"), as I was being a tad snarky. Please notice, though, that in the course of this thread we have now identified 4 different versions of this song (including the new Boland version).

I think Occasional Hope's on the right track about the concept for Patty's new video. And I like it a lot too. Here's my take on it:

Patty has indicated that the song "Busted" itself has a timeless message, that it is as relevant to these current hard economic times as it was when Harlan Howard wrote it back in the early sixties. And by extension, back to the culture of 19th coal mining as well.

The song itself is timeless and timely, and I think the video tries to capture that. The waitress is our frame of reference, and ticket to the past. She may be symbolic of all who struggle to make a living in this day and age, and she too, may be "busted". I think she sees in Patty's character a kindred spirit, and that she is not alone in her struggle.

The prosperous looking 19th century gentelmen in the Edsion kinetoscope parlor, as well as Patty's own band members, serve as contrast to the tale of economic woe she is describing in the song itself. To what end though, I am not exactly sure.

And I KNOW there is something going on behind fiddle player Deannie Richardson in that ghostly mirror! It is a mystery though..

I like the vintage, dreamlike, and surealistic vibe of this video. Some have said the images are at odds with the lyrics, but I think on some deeper level there is harmony between them. I think the video adds potency to the song, bypasses the rational brain and strikes right to the heart of intuitive, relational perception. The song and the video combined deliver a powerful emotional wallop.

And besides, Patty just looks so darn gorgeous in vintage fashion, and that hair style is a great look for her! Beautifully shot video all around. I just wished she came out of that kinetoscope at some point, and joined her band!

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned. CMT has a new Studio 330 Sessions showcasing Kellie Pickler's outstanding vocals and songs.
