The Grammys Will Go On Sans Picketing
- Striking writers claim that they won’t picket the Grammy Awards and Recording Academy President Neil Portnow has insisted that a full-scale Grammys will continue no matter what.
- Nashville Hype is sold on Sarah Kaine and believes she’s a traditional artist that can appeal to a younger demographic.
- Despite bluegrass authorities contrary opinions Edward Morris fully supports Rhonda Vincent’s right to bare her, uh…topographical features, even saying “I count this the most important advance in bluegrass music since Bill Monroe hired Flatt and Scruggs.”
- Montgomery Gentry has tentatively scheduled a new album for June 17.
- The Texas/Red Dirt Music Scene (TRDMS) blog is holding a contest to give away a couple of tickets to the Texas Music Awards along with paid accommodations and several albums. Definitely worth entering.
- This year’s Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion will be headlined by Ralph Stanley and Doc Watson.
- Marty Stuart and Connie Smith inducted Charlie Daniels into the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium on Saturday night:
- The author of Nine Bullets says his feelings for the Drive By Truckers album Brighter Than Creation’s Dark were merely lukewarm upon the first few listens but ends up dubbing it a “grower.” Later on he echoes the opinion that Patterson Hood is not a songwriter, but a fine storyteller he makes.
- The second single, “Good Friends and a Glass of Wine”, from the new LeAnn Rimes Album Family hits radio tomorrow.
- I had no inclination of listening to Gram Parsons with the Flying Burrito Brothers Live at the Avalon Ballroom 1969 until I read Stephen M. Deusner’s eloquent review for Pitchfork.
- Carrie Underwood had to take a mulligan after flubbing “How Great Thou Art” during the taping of the GAC Grand Ole Opry Gospel special on Sunday night (start at about the two minute mark):

The 9515 was named as a finalist out of thousands of nominations for Best Music Blog in the 2008 Weblog Awards, and now we need your help. Voting only takes a second, and you don't need to provide any personal information--not even your email address.
We've labored long and hard to come up with our list of the Top 10 Country Albums of 2008. Click here to see who claimed the honor of the year's top album, as chosen by The 9513's staff and writers.
Don’t confuse disappointing with worst, as that list would most likely be dominated by obscure indie knockoff bands along with a couple of mainstream releases. There has to be a modicum of expectation that’s dashed upon the release of an album for it to qualify for the year’s most disappointing.
Join host Kelly Dearmore as he shines the light on several noteworthy album releases you might have missed and interviews various artists, from Sarah Borges to Trent Willmon and Reckless Kelly to Wade Bowen, in the first two episode of The 9513 podcast.

I love Gram Parsons and have enjoyed the free mp3’s that Amoeba Music has been giving out. Check out the Biography “Hickory Wind” by Ben Fong Torres also….

I don’t understand all of the fuss about Rhonda Vincent. She shows bare arms and a little bit of cleavage; only in bluegrass is that considered risque. She’s a beautiful woman who dresses to accentuate her beauty, not exploit it.
January 23, 2008 at 11:55 am Permalink
I agree about Rhonda not exploiting.

Talk about a “blond” moment. on Carrie Underwood.
January 23, 2008 at 12:21 pm Permalink
A little cleavage is hardly a big deal. Nothing to get excited about, either way. Its perfectly fine if she wants to show a little cleavage.
But what is not fine is the fact that cleavage might sell more albums than musical quality. I would hope that people would buy Cds for the music inside, not the cleavage outside, but I know that isn’t always the case.

That’s not the case with Vincent though, who is an incredible talent. “Sex sells” is a minor affliction of young country talent and a major affliction of the pop market, but a genre that questions whether women should show bare arms doesn’t hand out seven female vocalist of the year awards to an artist just so they can grovel as she takes the stage.

Do people really buy a record because there’s a teensy bit of cleavage on the cover? Are those people unaware of the existence of porn?
January 23, 2008 at 1:11 pm Permalink
Kelly - I’ve had that book on my list for a while, but I don’t think I’ll be buying anymore books until I finish the countless numbers that I have only half read, or haven’t even cracked open yet.
Matt - I didn’t even know it was an issue until I read Morris’ post.

I would hope people don’t buy records because they see some cleavage on the front, but I bet they do. I know that there are studies that show that the color of a laundry detergent box can impact sales as well as customer satisfaction. With that in mind, I suspect cleavage can get some people to buy. I mean surely cleavage is better than bright yellow!
But yes, to anyone looking for cleavage: you can get far better cleavage elswhere!! Britney Spears has some good cleavage on one of her CD covers if I recall.

This discussion is going downhill… the more we talk about cleavage the more we’ll see even more female artists who have the chops and not the looks get passed over. Does anyone here think Aretha Franklin or Mama Cass would get signed today if they were just coming up now? Men get some of this treatment too, but I think females bear the brunt of it.
January 23, 2008 at 4:44 pm Permalink
I’d almost say would Mother Maybelle get signed to day or Jimmie Rodgers btr without them that would a moot point.

Carrie Underwood may be the most incapible individual to ever win Female Vocalist of the Year.
January 23, 2008 at 6:10 pm Permalink
Dave S,
First of all, it is spelled incapable. Are you sure you are capable of backing up that statement about Carrie? I highly disagree. One small flub of some words does not take away from an artists talents. I found it refreshing that she was able to laugh it off and sing the song 2 more times flawlessly. Just my personal opinion of course.

Regarding Rhonda Vincent, all 45 year old mothers should look so good! Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill……
Thanks for the link to the Nashville Hype article about Sarah Kaine. The song “Baptizin’ Hole” on her MySpace website is excellent. Its no wonder Dolly likes her as she sounds so much like a Dolly clone in both voice (lower and a bit rougher though) and style. I mean this as the highest compliment I can give a new artist. I consider Ashley Monroe a talent similar to a young Dolly, but while Ashley loves pop and rock and integrates those into some of her songs, it sounds like Sarah is stone cold country through and through. If Top 40 mainstream country radio won’t play Dolly’s new singles at this point, i don’t give Sarah much hope. All I do know is that when Sarah offers her music for sale I’ll be the first in line…….

For anyone up in arms about the cleavage from Rhonda Vincent, take a look at the photo on the back of Sara Evans’ last album.

Anybody who thinks the title Greatest Hits is referring to her songs hasn’t seen the back of the album.
January 24, 2008 at 8:43 am Permalink
The only reason I know about that photo is because I was browsing around Wal-Mart and picked up her CD to look at the track list and it was like BAM!! They still have it up on Amazon, too, but I don’t know anything about it being recalled.
Haha, Lanibug, you know we only buy music based on quality ;)
January 24, 2008 at 8:54 am Permalink
I know that there was one photo recalled because she deemed it “too sexy,” but I can’t remember if it was that one or the one where she’s standing in field in a cotton dress.
Either way, some pictures are worth $12.99.

Whoa Brady “Anybody who thinks the title Greatest Hits is referring to her songs hasn’t seen the back of the album.” That seemed to be very inappropriate and should be taken off as soon as possible. That was very rude and attacks on singer is very wrong and it sounds like an attack
January 24, 2008 at 8:14 pm Permalink
Wow! I didn’t realize saying a woman is attractive is an “attack.” I’ve apparently attacked a lot of women without knowing about it.
January 24, 2008 at 8:24 pm Permalink
Whoosh. Tyler, I was being facetious, and just to set things straight Brady wasn’t the one that made the comment.
I agree it may have been inappropriate, as many jokes are, but definitely not an attack. I apologize if it offended you.

Speaking of the Grammys, does anyone know who will be performing? I’ve seen Brad Paisley’s picture on the commercials. Hopefully he does not sing “Ticks” or “Online.” I’m crossing my fingers for a Miranda performance of “Famous in a Small Town.”

I’m pretty sure Taylor Swift is performing
