That strikes me as a rather different observation than Jones’. For one thing, he doesn’t say “country music”; for another, it’s not about terminology and categorizing.

Love Haggard and all, but he’s hardly one to decry the practice of bitching about today’s country music.

From an article on his website: “We don’t have the enthusiasm in music right now,” he says. “We don’t even have songs you could date a time period by. You’ve got girls singing about beating up their boyfriends. ‘Independence Day.’ I hate that f- song.”

I think Merle Haggard put it best years ago when he told me he was about to turn down a request to sing some kind of complaint-about-the-state-of-country-music song with Jones: “I don’t think George needs to be bitching with a great voice like that.”

It’s a shame George doesn’t comment here. He’d fit right in with the endless obsession over which categories various artists do or do not fall into.

Mmm, there are lots of Black folks who think that rap isn’t music on the same grounds that Jones offers: it’s “talking stuff.” I’d be inclined to chalk it up more to generational attitude than race.

I think the comments about rap, coupled with the “Oh I am open minded I like 2 black artists” and the rap isn’t music nonsense are borderline racist.

I think it’s borderline racist to even pick on that. Jones didn’t name Brook Benton or Ray Charles because of their race, but because they aren’t country artists (though Ray Charles did have a few country hits). The rap comments were made because a reporter asked him about it. It’s no surprise that someone from Jones’ generation wouldn’t care for rap; perhaps the reporter was race-baiting by asking the question in the first place??
