Phil – just my opinion (said directly, i.e. NOT behind your back), but isn’t it bullheaded to state you like (by which i’m guessing you mean, you ‘respond’) to the artist as ‘only’ an artist,as tho the person ‘behind the artist’ didn’t really matter – even exist?! I don’t think that’s possible w/out MAJOR manipulation of image, which you are so dead set against. How many artists would be as popular if their IMAGE (= as a person) hadn’t been positioned by their managers, etc, to come across as being a certain way? How can u claim an artist really IS an artist if who they are as a person doesn’t matter?!? Let me cite a few obvious examples of this: Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin…heck, some of those raw American Idol contestants are interesting to those of us easily-manipulated soccer moms BECAUSE we get a chance to see them on TV BEFORE the managers & labels, etc, have gotten their hands on them & made sure that who they are as a person matches up 2 who they are in the public eye haha!! Surely u are being disingenious to say you are not attracted to Kristy as a person, only as an artist, when she was one of those ‘in the raw’ AI contestants who we got to see pre-major label manipulation?’

Love Haggard and all, but he’s hardly one to decry the practice of bitching about today’s country music.
