The Discovery Aspect Of Blogs: Recommend An Artist
One particularly valuable aspect of music blogs is the discovery aspect in which both authors and commenters on the blog have the ability to introduce new and worthwhile music to the audience. That aspect coupled with the power of a trusted recommendation from a respected critic or a commenter whose tastes align with your own creates a fairly compelling reason to check out a new band or album. So what I want y’all to do is recommend one unknown act and leave a link to their MySpace profile. By unknown, I mean simply that they haven’t achieved any sort of national prominence or success and aren’t on a major label.

Forgotten Artists: Bradley Kincaid In a manner similar to Alan Lomax, William Bradley “The Kentucky Mountain Boy” Kincaid was one of the great American musicologists and collectors of American folk, country and parlor songs.
Forgotten Artists: Goldie Hill Had Carl Smith and Goldie Hill been born 30 or 40 years later, they might have been like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw–the dominant married couple in country music.
Miranda Lambert - “More Like Her” This kind of material, as opposed to her tough-chick-done-wrong romps like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Gunpowder and Lead,” is where her real promise lies
Joey Rory - “Cheater, Cheater” It’s actually downright frivolous, but that just makes it all the more fun. And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.

Julia, Catherine Britt was signed to RCA Nashville from 2002-2007 and recorded her albums “Too Far Gone” and “Little Wildflower” (produced by Dierks bentley’s producer Brett Beavers) in Nashville. Her song “Little Wildflower” is currently # 1 on the Aussie country singles charts and the music video was # 1 on the CMC video channel. She never became well known here in the US (How could she with no CDs released stateside?) but Catherine has quickly re-established herself as a top Aussie country star down under. Okay enough blabber…..
One of my current favorite new Aussie artists:

Kacey Musgraves was on Nashville Star, and has opened a few shows for Miranda Lambert, so I don’t know whether or not she’s too well-known for this post, but she isn’t on a major label… yet. So check her out, she’s great.
Jaida Dreyer also has some great music, and is country music traditionalist like Kacey.

Julia, I suppose most people haven’t heard of Catherine Britt, so we’ll let it slide that she was on a major label ;) Good recommendation, though.
—
Colt, Listening to French ain’t much different than listening to songs that don’t make any sense, so I guess they work.
—
Rick, I’ve stumbled acrossed Kirsty Lee Akers more than a few times (most likely because of you mentioning her) and she’s growing on me a little. She seems to blend the line between traditional and contemporary quite well.
—
Ryan, Good suggestion, Jason Eady has some good stuff.
—
Chris, Glad to see someone else likes Corb Lund. I’ve been playing Horse Soldier quite a bit lately.
Why isn’t Lauren Lucas on a label?
Didn’t The Wrights get props from The 9513? How much more prominent does it get than that?
—
Kevin, I’ve heard Terri’s name a few places here and there, but I don’t think I’ve checked out her music before. I gotta say that her bio on MySpace is one of the most entertaining that I’ve read.
—
Matt B, thanks for the link to Johnny Reid. I wanted to check out some of his stuff after reading your review, but forgot to check MySpace.
—
Timmy Mac, I didn’t know that kinda twang could come from Boston. I liked what I heard.
—
I’ll have to keep checking out the rest of these, but keep up the great recommendations. Is anyone finding anything new that they like?

I plan on writing some more in-depth stuff on these cats but we have some really really awesome country folks out in LA right now.
Make sure to check out
Mike Stinson, called the uncrowned king of the LA neo honky tonk scene (some consider his voice to be an acquired taste, I think it’s perfect) http://www.myspace.com/stinsoncountry
Dave Gleason, who just moved down to LA (kinda) from the Bay area. On top of being a great singer and songwriter, he’s a hell of a tele picker.
http://www.myspace.com/davegleasonmusic
David Serby, who has been featured here on the9513.com.
http://www.myspace.com/davidserby
Jaimi Shuey, especially the song “Wrong Girl”. It’s one of the few myspace songs that I make a point to listen to on a semi-regular basis.
http://www.myspace.com/jaimishuey
I could go on and on listing awesome LA country/roots bands.
I know that Austin fancies itself the place where real country music lives, but right now LA would give it a real run for it’s money.

I’ll second the Jason Eady, The Ginn Sisters, Corb Lund, The Wrights, Married By Elvis, and David Serby recommendations and raise it with:
The Border Blasters (Listen to: “Sunset on the Rio Grande,” “Colorado”)
R.G. Stark (Listen to: “Mineral Wells,” “Too Proud”)
Jimmy Barret (Listen to: “C Ya Soon,” “Someone”)
The Gunhands (Listen to: “Pass the Shine,” “Momma Loves Jesus”)
Hacienda Brothers (Listen to: “Different Today,” “Turn To Grey”)
Now I’ll have to go check out the rest of ya’lls recommendations.

I live in Nashville and have had the opportunity to see this girl play out a few times. The music she has on myspace pales in comparison to seeing her live. A ton of buzz going on about her in town right now. She not only has a unique, wonderful sound, she looks great and writes like a pro.

Jared Ashley, who was on Nashville Star of course, deserves a good label. Not just any label, a good one! Singing cover songs just won’t cut it for a guy with a voice like Jared, he has to sing stuff that fits him.
Here’s his MySpace, much of the music was recorded for Curb (but never released from Curb)

Another recommendation for Jaida Dreyer.
I recently saw her perform during CMA Fest with her band and was blown away. She ended up being one of my favorite new discoveries during the festival.
On a side note: she also had Carolyn Dawn Johnson backing her up which I thought was really, really cool. =)

This Guy Is The Real Deal. No One- In Nashville Or Anywhere In The World Can Match His Vocal Stylings or Ability, Or Even His Heart Which He Wears On His Sleave At Every Show. His Original Song (Written By Sam Derseweh) Called “Pack Up Your Memories” Has Got Great Vocals As Well As Awesome Steel Guitar Playing By The Late Great John Hughey.
