The Bucky Diaries And Dolly’s Ambition

  • Bucky Covington goes blogging. His first post has already been made over on the USA Today Idol Chatter blog in a series that’s titled The Bucky Diaries and will be updated every Monday. I wish more artists would start blogs that could be updated by themselves and the band whenever they wanted, but I wonder if it’s a good move for Bucky to keep associating himself with American Idol. On one hand I can see where it could help him stay in front of the AI audience and help him sell a few more albums, but on the other hand it feels like if he ever wants a longer shelf-life as an artist he needs to separate himself.
  • Even at 61 Dolly Parton doesn’t seem to be slowing down. She has ideas to start her own cosmetic line, start up a weekly kid’s TV show, and star in some more movies. And thats still not all, she says:

“I’ve never been the big recording star I’d love to be some day. I’ve had lots of hits off and on through the years but I’ve never had the success of other artists - one hit after another back-to-back-to-back and big hits, where every song is going to be number one,” she said.

If only we all had so much ambition. I’ve got the ideas, but lack the motivation to get started.

  • In a time when more musicians have their instruments insured than have their health insured, Robert Earl Keen is running his band more like a business.

Some years ago he created a pension plan for the self-employed, known as a SEP-IRA, for his band members, and began to pay into it. His latest addition is a health-care plan. These have helped keep his band together.

Being self-employed myself I know how hard it is to get insurance and how expensive everything can be, so it’s nice that Keen is taking care of his band like that.

That’s inspiring that Dolly is still so ambitious! I’m exausted reading about all her projects in the works. I always thought she should keep acting; she’s so fun to watch on the big screen. She’s a busy woman, that’s for sure.
