The Best Country Songs of 2007

First off, Happy New Year to everyone. To start the new year off, we’ve compiled a list of the best songs from 2007. The staff had a lengthy discussion about which songs should be available for nomination for such a list and we decided that a song had to be an original recording on an album released in 2007 or released as a single to radio to qualify, and of course, it had to be country. As you can imagine, that opened the window of eligibility to a large amount of songs and similarly a large number of opinions about which songs were the best and just how good they really were. Each staff member compiled their own lists that were then combined and ranked via a top secret algorithm, resulting in The 9513’s Best Songs of 2007.

For the second episode of The 9513 Country Music Podcast, your host Kelly Dearmore caught up with two seemingly different artists in Sarah Borges and Trent Willmon. Take a listen.
Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.
In this exclusive interview for The 9513, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook talks about life with the band, as well as A Place to Land, the group’s current album, which has charted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart on two separate occasions

Good list with some obvious and not so obvious (which I love), but why do you spoil it by listing #1 at the top of the list versus building up some tension and popping the cork at the bottom after a bit of scrolling down?? That’s like hearing the winner of the best movie Oscar and THEN being told who the nominees were.
January 2, 2008 at 2:16 pm Permalink
I agree with Kelly, there was no anticipation for who was taking #1.
That aside, I’m liking that you’re showing some love to Sunny Sweeney.
“Slow Swinging Western Tunes” would definitely be in my top list of songs in 07. Also “If I could” or the “auctioneer” song is one of the funnest songs put out this year. The way she sped up and texafied the song made it a great song both live and on the album.

It’s a perfect list. I can’t think of one snotty, sarcastic thing to say. Well done.
January 2, 2008 at 3:03 pm Permalink
Maybe it was overshadowed by the Raising Sand project, but Alison Krauss’ “Jacob’s Dream” (from her Thousand Miles solo album) was one of my few goosebump-inducers this year…”Letter To Me” was another :) and good to see Sunny’s If I Could” on the list
January 2, 2008 at 3:06 pm Permalink
Once again, this list is shamefully lacking in Little Big Town. “Dreaming Fields” is a hell of a song, though.
January 2, 2008 at 3:16 pm Permalink
Alright, you guys win. I reversed the list. The HTML standard doesn’t allow for reverse lists, so I went with a regular ordered list.

I was just being a mean bastard, I think it helps though ;o)
January 2, 2008 at 7:29 pm Permalink
Although we disagree with number placements I do have to say that we did get some crossover in our lists.
Nice job.
January 2, 2008 at 9:56 pm Permalink
I have to agree with Peter. I was disappointed that “Jacob’s Dream” didn’t make the cut. That’s a pit of the stomach song. Incredible. But I do have to say that Sadie and her blue dress really grabbed me from the get-go. All the more so since I’d never heard of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver before I won the CD from this site. Never heard of ‘em before. Excellent CD, too.

Its great to see Elizabeth Cook, Sunny Sweeney, The Derailers, Jamey Johnson, and other fine “true country” artists on the list that mainstream country radio completely ignores.
The song that surprised me the most, in a pleasant way that is, is Ashton’s Shepherd’s ballsy “Takin Off This Pain” making it into the top 10! The fine debut single stalled in the low 30’s on the country singles charts and is now slipping down. I’ve heard Ashton live of the Grand Ole Opry and I really like her style and attitude. I truly hope Aston’s label doesn’t follow the normal pattern these days and withhold the release of her CD until she scores a radio “hit”. Maybe she’ll get lucky like Sarah Johns and actually get her CD released on schedule. Speaking of Sarah Johns, where’s “Big Love In a Small Town” on your list? That song makes me want to go kicking hay bales and tipping cows more than anything else that I’ve heard that came out this year….

I would take Stay off the list. But the rest I would say could be the top 50 songs, but in no particular order. They are all good.
January 3, 2008 at 1:58 pm Permalink
Good list although I am disappointed that there are no songs listed from Joe Nichols latest album, such as “If I Could Only Fly” or “Real Things”.
January 3, 2008 at 2:40 pm Permalink
Peter: Some vote splitting went on since she had a few good songs on that album and it was a compilation, so that took a few out of consideration.
Chris: Little Big Town did garner a few nominations, but I think they suffered from not having any songs that could be considered definitively better than the others on the album.
Ben J: Ok, I admit it, it does help, but you’re still mean bastard ;)
KathyP: Glad you liked the Doyle Lawson CD. I think Matt has mentioned it a few times, but Doyle Lawson has done a lot of gospel bluegrass stuff, so he probably hasn’t shown up on the country radar very often.
Rick: I’m looking forward to more from Ashton Shepherd as well. Jim mentioned that “Takin’ Off This Pain” isn’t going for adds until February, so it still has a shot.
Devo: Why would you take “Stay” off the list?
Corey: I like Joe Nichols, but I thought most of the material on his latest album was sub par. Take “Real Things,” for instance, it’s just a list of nostalgic fawning that’s been recycled too many times; see Bucky Covington - “A Different World.”

My only pet peeve with lists like this is that they laud the artist, but the songwriter(s), the creative force creating the fodder for these artists to aim and fire with, are not mentioned. Give the tunesmiths a little love.
January 3, 2008 at 4:18 pm Permalink
Not even close to what my list would look like, but that’s just based on taste. “Bonnie Blue” is such a great song, I agree with that one!
January 3, 2008 at 6:23 pm Permalink
I wanted to go through and list all of the songwriters, but the task would have ended up pushing the list back further than we wanted it. Expect that next year.

Great list! I stumbled across you all a few months ago and LOVE your daily emails, etc… I really like how your whole team seems to like some of the contemporary country that’s on the radio (ie. Sugarland’s Stay) as well as the more alt stuff. So many country critics /blogs these days seem to exclusively like the ultra cool kid “slit your wrists” country music which I do appreciate but don’t believe is the end all - be all, for authentic country music fans. :)
Keep up the good work!

Once again the site completely snubs Carrie Underwood. I just don’t understand it.
January 5, 2008 at 1:39 am Permalink
Carl, what Carrie songs would you suggest deserve to be considered among the 50 best songs of the year?
“Just a Dream” appeared on my individual Top 50 but I didn’t think that any of the other tracks from Carnival Ride were worthy. While “Before He Cheats” got a lot of airplay in 2007, it was released in 2006 and thus was not eligible. Had it been eligible, I imagine that it would’ve landed near the top of the list.
January 5, 2008 at 2:02 am Permalink
While I know the staff of this site tends to disagree, I find that most of the tracks on Carnival Ride to be worthy of your list, except for maybe 2 or 3 songs. Conservatively, some that I think deserve a spot are “Just A Dream”, “Flat On the Floor”, “So Small”, and maybe “All American Girl”. Looking at the whole Top 50, I think these four songs are definitely as good, if not better than every song on the list. Having said that, I don’t completely disagree with every song on your list, as a matter of fact, I think most of the songs deserve their positions, I just don’t see why you’d leave out Carrie, whose made more of an impact on country music has than any other artist has in a very long time.
January 5, 2008 at 5:00 pm Permalink
Carl - It’s a matter of taste, not impact. The 9513 guys have their blog. I have mine. There are many others. Go get yours own blog and you can reflect your own taste there.
You’re a big Carrie fan, but you can’t expect everyone else to like everything she does. Even with as many records as she’s sold there are people who think far worse of her than what Brody and the guys write here. If anything, I find that the writers here are rooting for her, but no artist bats 1.000 their whole career.
January 5, 2008 at 7:34 pm Permalink
Betty - We all secretly despise Toby Keith and refuse to promote his music.
Actually, I’m a Toby fan. I just didn’t think his latest album lived up to his previous standards.
Julia - Glad you enjoy the blog and thanks for commenting.

BRADY… I guess I dont care for the Stay Video. I think it was planned the way it came out. It seems to me she started crying way too soon if it was for real. I bought Sugarland’s first cd because I thought the music was somewhat original, and she seemed to have some “soul” in her voice. But to me, her voice is not as good as it was before.
January 7, 2008 at 7:02 pm Permalink
“I just don’t see why you’d leave out Carrie, whose made more of an impact on country music has than any other artist has in a very long time.”
Carl, that is a somewhat true statement. But to me, its not a good impact. Too many “new” country fans think real country is dead, and are expecting all country to sound pop.
January 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm Permalink
Carrie may have had an impact, but I agree that it hasn’t been a good one. I don’t like the direction that country music is going, and she’s a prime example. Now we’ve got Jessica Simpson planning a country album? Ugh.
January 8, 2008 at 11:05 am Permalink
Excellent list! A couple songs for me that I really enjoyed last year… Halfway to Hazard “Taking Me On” “Devil and The Cross” “Daisy”, Blake Shelton “The More I Drink” (My theme song) and “It Ain’t Easy Being Me” although I like the original by Chris Knight a bit more -lyrically it’s outstanding, Emerson Drive’s “Moments” and Gary Allan’s “As Long As You’re Looking Back” and “Like It’s a Bad Thing”. Can’t believe you guys forgot Gary Allan… :)

where is Taylor swift our song and teardrops on my guitar should have been in the top ten
January 15, 2008 at 6:47 pm Permalink
yeah right, like Trisha Yearwood should be anywhere near even the top 100! What about taylor swift, carrie underwood, rascal flatts, dierks bentley?!?!?!
January 17, 2008 at 5:45 am Permalink
IMO If Your Reading This should of been higher on the list and I Need You is an excellent song. Just think both of them songs are up for the Grammy Country Song Of The Year.
January 18, 2008 at 7:47 pm Permalink
This country is dead. Without pop-country you wouldn’t find any thing country
Praise the lord for pop-country
And there tons of amazing Carrie underwood song
so small, Just a drew, Twisted, You wont find this , last night and I know you won’t
The number two our song
Number one teardrops on my guitar
She wrote both of the songs and the lyrics are amazing
January 19, 2008 at 6:37 pm Permalink
why are there only four good songs on here
“Nothin’ Better To Do” - LeAnn Rimes
“Letter To Me” - Brad Paisley
“Famous In A Small Town” - Miranda Lambert
“Don’t Make Me” - Blake Shelton
January 19, 2008 at 7:13 pm Permalink
I love how you called “Just a Dream” “Just a Drew” - your Taylor obsession knows no bounds! It’s bordering on comical. How old are you? Do your parents know you’re online?
Can you fathom there are other types of quality music other than pop-country? None of the songs you mention from this list are from the “pop country” side of the tracks.
January 20, 2008 at 8:22 am Permalink
Actually I’m 17 so you can fall back. Then i do listen to other kinds than pop-country. I would consider Leann song pop-country and she has always been that.
And i do listen to other Music. That would be Beyonce, Rihanna, Maroon 5, and Nickelback

Damn right Trisha is at the top. Whoever said she shouldn’t be anywhere near the top 100 is an idiot. Get over it; Carrie Underwood is a puppet who sells to puppets. Quit trying to make her something she isn’t - musically worthwhile.

so, i accidentally ran across this somewhere, and i just wanna say thank you to who ever put slow swinging western tunes on this list. that is the first song i ever wrote, and it’s a very personal song about my relationship with my daddy, so it means alot to see that on a top in 2007 list.
