The Best Country Songs of 2007

Good list with some obvious and not so obvious (which I love), but why do you spoil it by listing #1 at the top of the list versus building up some tension and popping the cork at the bottom after a bit of scrolling down?? That’s like hearing the winner of the best movie Oscar and THEN being told who the nominees were.

It’s a perfect list. I can’t think of one snotty, sarcastic thing to say. Well done.

Once again, this list is shamefully lacking in Little Big Town. “Dreaming Fields” is a hell of a song, though.

I have to agree with Peter. I was disappointed that “Jacob’s Dream” didn’t make the cut. That’s a pit of the stomach song. Incredible. But I do have to say that Sadie and her blue dress really grabbed me from the get-go. All the more so since I’d never heard of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver before I won the CD from this site. Never heard of ‘em before. Excellent CD, too.

I would take Stay off the list. But the rest I would say could be the top 50 songs, but in no particular order. They are all good.

Peter: Some vote splitting went on since she had a few good songs on that album and it was a compilation, so that took a few out of consideration.

Chris: Little Big Town did garner a few nominations, but I think they suffered from not having any songs that could be considered definitively better than the others on the album.

Ben J: Ok, I admit it, it does help, but you’re still mean bastard ;)

KathyP: Glad you liked the Doyle Lawson CD. I think Matt has mentioned it a few times, but Doyle Lawson has done a lot of gospel bluegrass stuff, so he probably hasn’t shown up on the country radar very often.

Rick: I’m looking forward to more from Ashton Shepherd as well. Jim mentioned that “Takin’ Off This Pain” isn’t going for adds until February, so it still has a shot.

Devo: Why would you take “Stay” off the list?

Corey: I like Joe Nichols, but I thought most of the material on his latest album was sub par. Take “Real Things,” for instance, it’s just a list of nostalgic fawning that’s been recycled too many times; see Bucky Covington - “A Different World.”

Not even close to what my list would look like, but that’s just based on taste. “Bonnie Blue” is such a great song, I agree with that one!

Great list! I stumbled across you all a few months ago and LOVE your daily emails, etc… I really like how your whole team seems to like some of the contemporary country that’s on the radio (ie. Sugarland’s Stay) as well as the more alt stuff. So many country critics /blogs these days seem to exclusively like the ultra cool kid “slit your wrists” country music which I do appreciate but don’t believe is the end all - be all, for authentic country music fans. :)

Carl, what Carrie songs would you suggest deserve to be considered among the 50 best songs of the year?

“Just a Dream” appeared on my individual Top 50 but I didn’t think that any of the other tracks from Carnival Ride were worthy. While “Before He Cheats” got a lot of airplay in 2007, it was released in 2006 and thus was not eligible. Had it been eligible, I imagine that it would’ve landed near the top of the list.

Carl - It’s a matter of taste, not impact. The 9513 guys have their blog. I have mine. There are many others. Go get yours own blog and you can reflect your own taste there.

You’re a big Carrie fan, but you can’t expect everyone else to like everything she does. Even with as many records as she’s sold there are people who think far worse of her than what Brody and the guys write here. If anything, I find that the writers here are rooting for her, but no artist bats 1.000 their whole career.

BRADY… I guess I dont care for the Stay Video. I think it was planned the way it came out. It seems to me she started crying way too soon if it was for real. I bought Sugarland’s first cd because I thought the music was somewhat original, and she seemed to have some “soul” in her voice. But to me, her voice is not as good as it was before.

Carrie may have had an impact, but I agree that it hasn’t been a good one. I don’t like the direction that country music is going, and she’s a prime example. Now we’ve got Jessica Simpson planning a country album? Ugh.

IMO If Your Reading This should of been higher on the list and I Need You is an excellent song. Just think both of them songs are up for the Grammy Country Song Of The Year.

Actually I’m 17 so you can fall back. Then i do listen to other kinds than pop-country. I would consider Leann song pop-country and she has always been that.

And i do listen to other Music. That would be Beyonce, Rihanna, Maroon 5, and Nickelback

Damn right Trisha is at the top. Whoever said she shouldn’t be anywhere near the top 100 is an idiot. Get over it; Carrie Underwood is a puppet who sells to puppets. Quit trying to make her something she isn’t - musically worthwhile.

so, i accidentally ran across this somewhere, and i just wanna say thank you to who ever put slow swinging western tunes on this list. that is the first song i ever wrote, and it’s a very personal song about my relationship with my daddy, so it means alot to see that on a top in 2007 list.
