The Academy Of Country Music To Honor Lifetime Achievements
- Carrie Underwood has begun work on her newest album. She’s already recorded more than enough songs, so she says it’s going to be hard to try and pick and choose since they’re all turning out so great.
“I have co-written several of the ones that are probably for sure going to be on the album,” she added. “It’s amazing to get in there and really be a lot more [involved in] the recording process. I was a huge part of it last time, but this album is even more so. I found that I’m not a horrible writer, so that’s nice. It’s a little more me, and [songwriting] is another talent that I hope to develop.”
- Kathy Mattea’s next album sounds like something I could really get behind. The album will consist of Appalachian mountain songs and will be produced by Marty Stuart. She says she’s been wanting to do the project for a long time, since she comes from a family of coal miners, but she didn’t know if she could do it justice.
- Take Country Back posted an old school music video of Dale Watson shot in Austin, TX. You can see the Austin skyline, Town Lake, the Broken Spoke, the Continental Club, there’s even a cameo by The Geezinlaws, and I think I saw Ray Benson in there as well. The good news is that Watson’s “Justice for All” video will start airing on both GAC and CMT Pure. Hopefully people will like it and purchase his album that’s due out next Tuesday, April 24th.
- It seems like the quality of music releases are starting to pick up for the year and I’m excited about a number of them, one being Elizabeth Cook’s new album, Balls, with a street date of May 1st. Twang Nation teases us with his early review.
The song that begets the title, “Sometimes it takes Balls to be a Woman” is next - Like many great country songs recorded by woman it’s both boldly declarative and coyly playful. A nice shuffle and some mean guitar work by the Nashville master Kenny Vaughn drives this baby all the way home. Cook does a shout out to Loretta and Dolly just to let folks know she knows who paved the path she’s now gracefully walking.
- Those broadcasting radio over the internet were dealt a heavy blow on Monday. A panel of judges “threw out requests to reconsider a ruling that hiked the royalties they must pay to record companies and artists.” A lot of the webcasters have said that the new royalties will put them out of business.
- The Academy of Country Music will honor its latest recipients of lifetime awards in Nashville.
Harlan Howard, Waylon Jennings, Jack Lameier, Buck Owens, Dolly Parton and Don Williams will be honored Wednesday, June 20, at the Tennessee State Museum, with a rhinestone-friendly exhibit called “Sparkle & Twang: Marty Stuart’s American Musical Odyssey” as the backdrop.
That’s what I call an awards show and a true tribute to country music.

Don’t confuse disappointing with worst, as that list would most likely be dominated by obscure indie knockoff bands along with a couple of mainstream releases. There has to be a modicum of expectation that’s dashed upon the release of an album for it to qualify for the year’s most disappointing.
