The 9513’s Predictions For The 2007 CMA Awards
We’re fast approaching the one year anniversary for The 9513, which means tomorrow night’s CMA Awards will be the first time we cover the event, now in it’s 41st year and dubbed Country Music’s Biggest Night. Much fuss has been made about the absence of female nominees in both the Entertainer and Album of the Year categories, but when it comes down to it the show strives to nominate the crème de la crème. Whether that distinction is achieved is a matter of personal taste and a subject that we’ll be happy to butt heads on in the comment section. The only thing that the entire staff agreed on was that Rascal Flatts would be walking away with the Vocal Group of the Year award.
Read on to see a list of nominees and to view our individual predictions. Check back tomorrow night for live updates of the event.

Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.
In this exclusive interview for The 9513, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook talks about life with the band, as well as A Place to Land, the group’s current album, which has charted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart on two separate occasions

Interesting picks, guys. I don’t know about you all, but who I’d like to win and who I think will win are two totally different things.
Like the Female Vocalist of the Year category.

I’m in agreement, Dave. There’s more than a couple of my predictions that differ from my personal choices.
If it didn’t require so much work, I think it’d be interesting to see what a final list of nominations might look like for all the readers of The 9513.

I’m surpised no one picked Sugarland for Vocal Duo of the Year, especially after Jim wrote that piece on the duo getting snubbed of an Album of the Year nomination. But like I said, who WILL win and who you WANT to win are not always the same.

I so agree, who I think should win and who will win are two totally different things. I also agree I cannot believe that no one picked Sugarland, especially after the year that they have had….but again who we want to win does not always matter, we just have to support our favorites by seeing them in concert and buying their music…..

Yes, that’s a very good point, guys. This list is very much a list of predictions, not personal preferences. I don’t think Sugarland has a chance in hell of winning the Duo award considering that they obviously, given their lack of other nominations, have very little support at the moment. Picking Big & Rich to win in that category is already a risky move, and they have the weight of the WB group behind them.

I really don’t have strong feelings about the Duo category except for not wanting to see Brooks and Dunn win it again. As it was established in a different post on The 9513, the quality of their work decreases with each new release from them. They have monopolized this category for way too long. In my opinion, Sugarland, Montgomery Gentry, and Big and Rich are all very worthy of receiving the award, and moreso than Brooks and Dunn.

I wish I could say that my predictions matched up with my personal picks, but for the most part, they didn’t. It’s been a long time since the CMA aligned with my tastes, but they did for a couple of years there in the early and mid-90’s.

Just for the hell of it, here are mine:
Entertainer- Brad Paisley
Male Vocalist- George Strait
Female Vocalist- Carrie Underwood
Horizon- Taylor Swift
Vocal Group- Rascal Flatts
Vocal Duo- Sugarland
Single- Before He Cheats, Carrie Underwood
Song- Stupid Boy, Keith Urban
Album- Dierks Bentley, Long Trip Alone
Vocal Event- Because of You, Reba McEntire w/ Kelly Clarkson
Video- Online, Brad Paisley
Although I picked Carrie Underwood to win Female Vocalist of the Year, I think Reba and Martina were both nominated this year for a reason. Perhaps the voters intend on breaking the tie for most wins in the category. I wouldn’t be surprised if Martina received it.
The Horizon Award is all Taylor Swift this year. Although she hasn’t had a #1 single, let a lone 3 of them like Atkins had, she has put out a high-quality album that’s been selling very well. Her constant touring and exceptional writing skills compensate for her slow climbs on the singles charts. The singles stats is the only thing Atkins has on Swift IMO. Since getting a #1 song doesn’t exactly line the pockets of the labels, I’ll go with Swift.
I predicted Dierks will win the Album of the Year because it was my favorite release of 2006, and I know the voting history in this category. The CMA sometimes goes with quality over quantity (There’s More Where That Came From- Lee Ann Womack- 2005) and I think this year will be one of those times.

Think and want are vastly different.
My predictions are in my blog (although I admit to being slightly wishy washy on some)

I learned one thing tonight–don’t bet against the juggernaut.
