To enter the contest, just leave a comment to this article telling us what your favorite thing about the holiday season is. Winners will be randomly selected for all eligible comments.
Comments will be accepted up until 11:59 am on New Year’s Eve. You must use a valid email address when leaving your comment so that we can contact you if you win. As always, thanks for reading The 9513 and here’s hoping you and yours have a very merry Christmas.
Rodney Carrington – Make it Christmas (5 Copies)
“People hear my funny songs and always say that I have a great voice,” says Carrington. “They ask me why don’t I do some serious music. So, this record ain’t got a funny song on it. It’s a big-band, Frank Sinatra-type Christmas record; something I’ve always wanted to do”
Diamond Rio – The Star Still Shines (3 Copies)
Released in 2007, Diamond Rio’s Christmas collection contains 10 traditional holiday anthems as well as the original “The Star Still Shines” and an instrumental version of “Christmas is Coming” (from A Charlie Brown Christmas)
Larry The Cable Guy – Larry’s Hula-Palooza Christmas Luau DVD (1 Copy)
“Larry’s 90-minute special includes such guest stars as Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”), Caroline Rhea, George Lindsey (“The Andy Griffith Show”), comedians Reno Collier and Jon Reep, Peter Oldring, Sara Erikson, the MuzikMafia’s Two Foot Fred, mentalist Marc Salem and returning favorites Tony Orlando and Angela Little MacKenzie (“Reno 911”). In addition to comedy and sketches, the special will include musical performances from artists including Billy Currington and the Zac Brown Band.”
The Beach Boys – Christmas Harmonies (1 Copy)
“The music of Christmas is as important as Santa Claus and sleigh bells during the yuletide season, and there’s no other act from the Rock era that captured the holiday spirit more than The Beach Boys. Their pure, natural and warm vocals were as comforting as hot cocoa during a snow storm. Christmas Harmonies contains the best of their seasonal recordings including “Little Saint Nick,” “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town,” “Santa’s Beard,” “White Christmas” and many more.”
Olivia Newton John – Christmas Wish (1 Copy)
“Olivia Newton John singing some of your favoirte Christmas tunes. Featuring special gusts: Jon Secada, Jim Brickman, Jann Arden, Michael McDonald, Marc Jordan and Barry Manilow.”
The Jayhawks – Music From The North Country (2 Copies)
“Music From The North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology spans six Jayhawks albums, including their debut on Twin-Tone (Blue Earth) and the five albums cut for American Recordings. Music From the North Country is a single disc career overview put together under the guidance of Gary Louris.”
Raul Malo – Lucky One (2 Copies)
“Malo wrote Lucky One over a two-year period at his Nashville home and was so happy with the result that several of his home demos appear as final versions on the CD. For the rest, he enlisted co-producer Steve Berlin, best known for his work with Los Lobos. “I trust Steve musically,” Malo says. “Art comes first with him. That’s the most important quality of all; nothing gets in the way of that.”" (Amazon)
Colt Ford – Ride Through The Country (2 Copies)
“Though not as left-of-center as Buck 65 or Ridley Bent, or as bat-shit crazy as “Insane” Shane Mckane, this 300 lb former PGA golfer comes across as a drinking buddy of Everlast and Bubba Sparxxx that might have passed a bottle with Jamey Johnson (who appears here on the cut “Cold Beer”) when he was working out the lyrics for “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” (Twang Nation)
Amy Speace – The Killer in Me (3 Copies)
“I kind of spilled blood all over this project,” Amy Speace says of her new album The Killer In Me, which marks a quantum creative leap from the artist’s 2006 breakthrough effort Songs For Bright Street. While that release won her widespread critical acclaim and a loyal international fan base, The Killer In Me finds the New York-based singer/songwriter forging into deeper, darker lyrical and musical terrain, borne largely out of the dissolution of her 10-year marriage. “This is the record that I needed to make,” Speace states.” (Amazon)
Chip Taylor – Yonkers, NY (1 Copy)
“Until a feature-length film on singer-songwriter Chip Taylor’s improbable life comes along, “Yonkers, NY,” his latest release, will do nicely. Here we find the veteran tunesmith moving between song and anecdote, reminiscing about his childhood in the New York City suburbs, a time shared with siblings who’d go on to make quite a name for themselves, including actor Jon Voight. Taylor’s father, a golf pro who convinced his children that he was an FBI agent “bound for glory,” also plays a role in these curiously entertaining tales. Interspersed are reminders of Taylor’s budding fascination with music and composing; “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning” were among his early hits.” (Washington Post)
Tracy Lawrence – The Rock (1 Copy)
“A powerful, emotional overview of spiritual consciousness, The Rock takes stock in life’s blessings and the need to be more grateful, recognizes that life is hard, and not always good, but through it all, the strength of faith and hope reign triumphant.” (Amazon)
Bryan Clark – Gossip, Inspiration and Slander (1 Copy)
“Clark’s singing and guitar playing easily rank with the top big-name country stars like Keith Urban and Brad Paisley. Clark’s simply a monster player, songwriter, singer, and a musical force of prodigious talent who deserves your immediate and complete attention.” (Vintage Guitar)
Megan Monroe – One More Broken String (1 Copy)
“This Indie singer/songwriter combines heartache, desperation and a “take your final stand” mentality with a musical edge that combines a tinge of the Delta blues, pure bluegrass and traditional country.” (CD Baby)
Miss Leslie – Between the Whiskey and the Wine (1 Autographed Copy)
“Miss Leslie and Her Juke-Jointers play honky tonk country music with a 50s and 60s flair. Combining original material along with obscure country tunes that they have unearthed from the 50s and 60s, the band opens up classic sounds in a nouveau honky-tonk style.” (CD Baby)

Either Raul Malo or the Jayhawks would nicely fit under the tree!
Oh…and in 2010, keep an eye and ear out for the band Yarn from Brooklyn!

I ran the gamut of things through my head and centered on the one thing that gives me the most emotional, spirited high there is and that’s playing “Joy to the World” at midnight on Christmas morning in church. I can play that trumpet but at that point I know in my entire being, it’s not me. It’s like something so filled with hope and light has entered … that my fingers fly, my sound is pure and I blast out the good news that Christ is born! When I finish playing..I’m shaky, my eyes water but yet I feel like every sinful thought and deed has just been erased from my life and I’m me once more.

My favorite time is Christmas eve. I enjoy the camaraderie, time off work, time spend with family & friends, reminiscence, and the booze. The whole thing in general gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Cold beer and Roger Miller. Not to shabby.

I’m not a big Rodney fan,
but his Christmas Album is surprisingly good.
His rendition of Mary, Did You Know is one of the better renditions that I’ve heard.
Also Camouflage and Christmas Lights is an appropriate song in these times.
So If you’ve got a extra copy, I’m all in for some Rodney Christmas.

Everything’s great… the spirit, the family, the food, the music… But the best part about Christmas is watching kids open presents.

I always enjoy seeing my Grandfather on Christmas morning. The oldest person in the house and still the first one up on Christmas morning. About 6:00 he pours his first eggnog and starts calling around town to wake everyone up.

I enjoy the spirit that Christmas brings. There’s just a different feeling in the air. I don’t care about presents or bright lights or any of that, it’s just about being with your family and drinking lots of eggnog. That’s the way I was raised. I think many people forget that, just look at Halloween, what the heck is that all about? While Christmas isn’t as special to me as it was in my youth, it still is a magical time of year to come together and be marry (hopefully). Besides, it’s so impossible to present shop for my family I might just get them all gift cards. They say it’s the new fruitcake!

My favorite thing about the Christmas season is when evil Demoncrap Grinches hold special “hold-over” sessions of the U.S. Senate in order to pass unconstitutional legislation in unlawful ways! Their dirty, double dealing backroom political shenanigans just warms the cockles of my heart with the fires of rage! Their Christmas Eve “December Surprise” final approval of the pathetic Odumbocare bill will be the socialist power grab gift that forever keeps on giving (crappy medical service to everyone that is). This destructive piece of sh*t, er I mean “legislation”, will be about as welcome and pleasant as an indoor house pet with chronic diarrhea. I would like to wish Odumbo and all his Demoncrap Grinch henchman a hearty Christmastime “F’ Off and Die You Scumbag Bastards”. I just love it when I can express the tender sentiments of a holiday season “Hallmark Moment” like this…

I like being with my family, it’s always been a tradition in my family that we get together at my great grandmother’s house and eat and just catch up on what’s going on. There’s presents but it’s never been my favorite part. We have and insanely big family so I use it to catch up with people.

Rick,
You will be visited by three ghosts on Christmas eve and they won’t be Hank Williams, Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings.

Christmas – a time to celebrate with family the birth of Christ. A time to watch the faces of the little ones opening their Christmas presents. A time to give thanks to the Lord for all He has given us. Merry Christmas one and all.

Glad that I have alternatives to the regular scholcky, worn out holday tunes, especially Raul Malo, Aaron Neville, Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson. This time of year is great for family and friends and reflecting on the possibilities of a New Year and the hope for peace, understanding and more good tunes to deal with life’s setbacks.
Happy New Year ya’ll! Thanks to the staff at 9513 for a great job this past year.

Nothing is better than hot apple cider on a cold winter night with the ones you love listening to classic christmas music (with some new tunes as well). Follow all that up with Christmas eve service at church, and then exchanging presents on christmas morning.

Best thing about Christmas is making smores on Christmas eve night on the fireplace. It became a family tradition a few years ago and is the only time of the year we make them.
Happy New Year to everyone!!!
