The 9513 One Year Anniversary Giveaway
Update: The contest has ended and all of the albums have been given away. If I mentioned that you were a winner and you didn’t receive an email from me or iTunes, be sure to let us know and we’ll try to get that squared away. Thanks to everyone who made our first year a success and we hope y’all will stick around for our next year.
We might be crazy (and a whole lot poorer), but in celebration of The 9513’s one year anniversary online, we’re going to be giving away free albums (via iTunes) to 40 different winners. We picked a few of our favorites that were released during The 9513’s existence to let you choose from (we were afraid of promoting bad music, so we had to limit the list). All you have to do is leave a comment on this here post. Go ahead, tell us how much you love The 9513… or not. Be sure to tell us which album from the list you’d like as well. For the sake of fairness, the winners will be chosen randomly, and for more random goodness, we’ll announce the winners randomly throughout the day.
The Approved List
- Aaron Watson – San Angelo
- Brad Paisley – 5th Gear
- Bruce Robison – It Came From San Antonio
- Dale Watson – From The Cradle to the Grave
- Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver – More Behind The Picture Than The Wall
- Drew Kennedy – Dollar Theater Movie
- Elizabeth Cook – Balls
- Guy Clark – Workbench Songs
- Jamey Johnson – That Lonesome Song
- John Anderson – Easy Money
- Josh Turner – Everything Is Fine
- Lyle Lovett – It’s not Big It’s Large
- Mary Chapin Carpenter – The Calling
- Porter Wagoner – Wagonmaster
- Randy Kohrs – Old Photograph
Wagoner & Thompson Giveaway
In addition to the 40 free albums, we’ve also decided to give away two collections from Bear Family Records, specifically, The Thin Man From The West Plains (Porter Wagoner) and Hank Thompson & His Brazos Valley Boys. These are large, comprehensive (read expensive) collections from periods in these artists careers and we realize that they may not appeal to everyone, so we’d ideally like to give them to someone who will appreciate them. If you want to be entered for this part of the contest, just say “Bear Family” or something equallly enlightening in your comment.
How To Enter
- Compose a comment telling us which album from the list that you’d like. You don’t have to say anything else to enter, but that would be boring, so say something cool.
- Let us know whether or not you’d like to be entered into the Bear Family Records giveaway as well.
- Enter a valid email address when you comment so that we can contact you if you’re a winner.
That was easy enough, wasn’t it?

John Anderson, Josh Turner, Elizabeth Cook or Brad Paisley – hey I am rebuilding my ipod here, since my old computer ate everything….but then again I am a loyal reader and commenter, so a new album would be great…..
November 15, 2007 at 8:33 am Permalink
And we have our first completely random winner of the day. Congratulations, but you gotta pick just one, Lanibug. Thanks for being a loyal reader and commenter.

Josh Turner or Brad Paisley’s album would be cool.
I still can’t remember how I stumbled on this place but now it’s one of my favorite reads in my “Music” section in my rss reader.

Amazing new look guys! the gobblers knob can only hope to occupy the large amount of space that is darkened by your shadow (dramatic enough??). Seriously, the new site does look amazing! While I am at it, how about that Jamey Johnson disc?

I have to admit, I’ve never heard of Dale Watson & Quicksilver but after seeing the rest of list (impressive, I have several), I gotta go with them. I trust your judgement. I’m a recent fan of yours. I went in search of country music blogs and yours popped up.
November 15, 2007 at 8:53 am Permalink
Josh Turner – since I do not have any of his albums — THANKS!!!!!!
As I have said before, I really enjoy this site and love the comments back and forth….

I’ve been reading since early this summer having stubeled onthis site from kevin’s countryuniverse. I don’t really comment often but I do read every day. Love the new look by the way.
I have everything on the list except Porter Wagoner Wagon Master. I never got around to buying it yet.
November 15, 2007 at 9:05 am Permalink
Oh, it’s a tough choice – but I’m gonna pick Brad Paisley’s 5th Gear, because as someone very wise once said, “There’s not a bad song on the album”.
I’ve become a huge fan of The 9513, and I think ya’ll really have your collective fingers on the pulse of what is good and true about Country Music – in all its various forms. Love ya!

Mornin’! Sure would be a treat to get a hold of those Bear Family sets. Being a lonely Texan up here in the cold city of Chicago, ya’ll keep me up to date with what’s worth listening to back at home. Thanks!

You know what? I can’t remember how the heck I found you guys, but I can say I wear my 9513 t-shirt at least as much as my wife wears her ratty-ass Morrissey ones, and that’s an accomplishment.
Should the gods of fate smile upon me and make me a giveaway winner, I’d guess I’d choose the Dale Watson, though maybe I should expand my horizons a bit. Dale Watson or the record that in your opinion represents Morrissey antidote (except Porter Wagoner – I already have that one).
November 15, 2007 at 9:31 am Permalink
Gotta go with Porter Wagoner – Wagonmaster.
Just stumbled onto the 9513 a couple of weeks ago, but it quickly made my mandatory early morning read list. You guys do an outstanding job!

One of this year’s most memorable country moments was when a fan grabbed Tim McGraw’s balls and Faith let her have it (Thank you YouTube). That said, the album from the list I’d like to win is Elizabeth Cook’s Balls. Lastly, I’d certainly like to be entered into the Bear Family contest as well.

Our next four winners are Jordan, KathyP, Lisa Torch, and Ben J. Congrats y’all.
KathyP: I think you got mixed up with your Dale Watsons and Doyle Lawsons. Dale is country to the bone and Doyle is more bluegrass. We have reviews of both albums if you wanna check them out and make your choice.
Ben J: Which will it be? Josh Turner or Brad Paisley?
Kelly: May the gods of randomness smile upon you before the day is done for your excellent and insightful comment.
Thanks everyone for the compliments and commenting. Keep checking back to see if you’re a winner.

I’d love to have Bruce Robison – It Came from San Antonio the most. Also, wouldn’t mind Dale Watson, Guy Clark, Josh Evans or Jamey Johnson. That’s a great selection! Love the 9513. This is the only blog I must read daily. I rarely agree with the reviews, but I love the honesty here. Love the news tidbits too. Great blog!

Bruce Robison please and since you asked for a comment, well shucks, my musical opinions are better than yours. Still love the blog though.

And oh yeah, my truck’s bigger than yours. I mean, er, larger than yours. This time, Lyle Lovett please.
November 15, 2007 at 10:37 am Permalink
Wow! You guys picked some great selections. Since I don’t already have it, I’ll pick John Anderson-Easy Money.
And, enter me in the Bear Family Records contest as well.
Thanks so much and Happy Anniversary!

I would LOVE Brad Paisley. I’m buying my dad an Mp3 player for christmas and thats his favorite. I can put it on there for him as an extra bonus! :)
November 15, 2007 at 11:13 am Permalink
I would love 5th Gear from Brad Paisley. My husband is primarily a hard rock fan but loves Brad’s wacky sense of humor. Brad is the only artist crazy enough to have a song to include disease spreading blood sucking insects!
The 9513. How I love thee. In a world where country radio has gone as gone off the deep end, you help to keep me sane. Thanks for all of your honest reviews and opinions of the state of country music today.
Keep up the good work!!!

Boy Howdy, Just cant say enough good words about your site. Only place to get the real info on real country tunes of today or yesterday. Sure would be fine to win a copy of the Dale Watson. And my head would hit the roof to get a nice bear family set. Sign me up partner!

Josh Turner, John Anderson, Lyle Lovett, Wagonmaster all look silly good, but who’s gonna complain about any of these titles. Love the site!!
November 15, 2007 at 11:26 am Permalink
Y’all know that you could say The 9513 sucks and you’d still be eligible to win, right? Thanks for the great comments, though.
Oh, and multiple comments doesn’t equal more entries or a greater chance of winning. Sorry Funk. But the good news is you were randomly selected along with Pierce, Kenny Christmas, Dave, and Angela.
November 15, 2007 at 11:29 am Permalink
You guys are great, I work at a country radio station and frequently refer to your website for country music news.
If I won anything I guess I would like either the Porter Wagoner disc or John Anderson one.
And I would definitely love to be entered into the Bear Family set contest.

You guys rock. I get excited whenever there’s a new blog entry. I don’t always agree, but you’ve exposed me to some great new (and old) music which is exciting. Oh, and the CMA Live Blog was the best way to watch the show yet.
My choice, definitely Porter Wagoner – Wagonmaster. I don’t have any of his work yet. While we’re at it, the Bear Family stuff would be good too.
November 15, 2007 at 11:39 am Permalink
Hey Brady will you enter me in the Bear giveaway too. I totally forgot to say that in my post and thanks for the album (this is not another entry in the main giveaway) I assume you’ll email us later today?

Mary Chapin, Josh Turner, Jamey Johnson, Porter Wagoner, Lyle Lovitt.
Hey, I knew I liked you guys for some reason besides the snarky opinions (which are remarkably like my own! Scary!)

Oh yeah, I forgot! “Bear Family!”

Id love to win the Lyle Lovett Cd. You guys are awsome.. what a great giveaway!
November 15, 2007 at 1:20 pm Permalink
As much as I hate to go up againest Kelly, The Jamey Johnson album sounds good. Plus, who can resist the chance to win a Bear Family set.
Here’s something cool: This is a story from Pedal steel legend Bud Isaacs (if you don’t know him, look him up and then thank him). Bud told me he was playing in a little club in Vegas in the early Sixties when a guy who was pretty drunk wandered up to the stage and half laid on it. After the song the guy said, “Bud, I’d love to be able to play like you. Hell, I guess there are a lot of guys who wish they could play like you. But, it’s like it says in the Bible: we can’t all be truck drivers.” I’ve got other great stories, but you’ll have to wait for the book ;)
November 15, 2007 at 1:30 pm Permalink
Oh, it’s like that Eric?? I may not have any interesting stories about great and influential musicians, but…well, I got nuthin’….enjoy the cd, and tell me about it…..
November 15, 2007 at 1:40 pm Permalink
I’ve entered everyone that’s been interested in the Bear Family contest. We’re gonna announce those winners tomorrow, but in the mean time, if y’all don’t help us promote this thing, we might not even get 40 comments. It’s FREE music.
Kelly… sorry, it’s just not your day yet. To make matters worse, Eric got selected after calling you out.
Eric: When are we gonna get a copy of that book?
Tonya, Howard, Onry & Mean, Zach Benson, and C. Eric Benson, congrats, y’all are all winners.
We’ve sent out a few albums already and we’ll be sending out more as the day goes on. Let us know if y’all have any problems or don’t receive your album.

BEAR FAMILY (I don’t do downloads, wouldn’t know where to start)
I think I am one of the older readers of this site, maybe the oldest (I’m 55+) and probably one of the staunchest traditionalists going. I appreciate that the folks who run this site aren’t just focusing on the “handsome hunks and shrieking divas” but have a appreciation for the heart and soul of what makes country music real. I especially appreciate that the 9513 is not afraid to give an album a negative review (although I won’t always agree with the review).
I hate reviews that go something like , “this is artist x’s 15th album, and like each of the 14 before it, this is the best album of his/her career”. Fortunately, I never see such claptrap from this site
In other words, keep doing what you’re doing
November 15, 2007 at 2:02 pm Permalink
hey wait a minute here!! I thought “random” meant that i at least had a shot?? I cant get any love for promo-ing the birthday? Just kidding….sort of.

I LOVE The 9513! I feel like I’m at Grandma’s house eatin’ grits and learnin’ about country music every day! Y’all run the BEST showprep site out there… and that’s sayin’ something! I’m an on-air personality and because of The 9513, I have HOTTER dish than anyone else. Lucky for them, I share. :) I’ve shared my praises for you with so many of my radio buddies… and we’ve even emailed back ‘n’ forth. You guys ROCK and thanks for making yourselves poorer so we music lovers can listen to something new. I have to admit, I have most of the albums on your list (that’s saying we share GREAT tastes of music!) but I’m missing the Dale Watson and that would normally be my first choice. HOWEVER, over the weekend, I was fortunate enough to see the Old Crow Medicine Show in concert and now I’m on a MAJOR bluegrass kick! So, I’ll beg beg beg for Doyle Watson & Quicksilver. I trust y’all in saying it’s one of the best! So, thanks! And keep up the great work!
November 15, 2007 at 3:18 pm Permalink
Oh yeah. With all of the above post, you’d think I could’ve remembered to also ask to be entered into the Bear Family giveaway too. Hey! I’m in radio! We can’t ever win ANYTHING! So, this is un-natural for me! :) Please also enter me into the other contest. Thank you!

No biggie, but I haven’t received an email yet. I do thank you for calling me a “winner” though… that did wonders for my self-esteem. :)
November 15, 2007 at 4:20 pm Permalink
Paul, you’ve been entered. You can take solace in knowing that we do have a few readers that are older than that, they just don’t comment often. Oh, and we appreciate your opinion when you do chime in. You’ve got a unique perspective of country music’s history.
Kelly, are you questioning the meaning of random now? Something bizarre happened when we drew the next set of winners: your name popped up first. How random is that?
Kelly, SW, Janet Collier, Corey Parkman, and Heidi can step into the winner’s circle now. SW, did you decide on one of those albums?
Funk: I think you gotta be a talented songwriter and be named Bruce before you get a chance with Kelly Willis. Sorry bud.

Jamey Johnson – That Lonesome Song
Jamey has one of the best traditional country male voices going these days along with Jeff Bates. If these guys can’t make you cry a tear in your beer, you must already be dead!
Bear Family – No. Now if it was Merle it might be a different story
This site is really well done and Matt C.’s commentaries are about the most accurate and literate of any I’ve read regarding the sad state of mainstream country music these days. And anyone who regards Ashley Monroe and Elizabeth Cook as highly as Matt is okay in my book…..

Doyle Lawson, Dale Watson – oh what the hell. Like I said, I trust your judgement. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver it is! They’re the ones that caught my eye when I first read the list. Thanks much.
November 15, 2007 at 7:52 pm Permalink
If it’s not too late, I’m up for Josh Turner, Elizabeth Cook, or John Anderson.
I love your site, and I love the T-shirt from a while back; I still wear it proudly, even if I occasionally have to explain what “The 9513″ is to people.
November 15, 2007 at 7:52 pm Permalink
Thanks to The 9513, Country Universe, and the Lefsetz Letter, I found myself listening to country radio again this year. Maybe the station here in LA will even get around to spinning some Dale Watson, whose new album I still need to hear.
My preference still leans toward Merle Haggard and Tom T. Hall, so please put me in the running for those Bear Family sets.

In continuation of the giveaway, Krista, Timmy Mac, Double-L, James, Jana, Crystal, and Rick are the latest winners.
I’m still working on getting some of the other albums out from earlier. Keep an eye open for an email from me or iTunes sometime soon.
Albert, Baron, Lynne, pchcowoby, and Stephen H: If y’all wanna pick a single album, I can make y’all winners, too. That sounds an awful lot like peer pressure to me.
November 15, 2007 at 10:40 pm Permalink
Double-L: Thanks for the kind words. MattC reviewed the Doyle Lawson album and gave it 4.5 stars and it’s received it’s fair share of time in the player since I got a hold of it. I’d vouch for it.
Hollerin’ Ben: How could you not have an iPod? I don’t particularly care for iTunes or iPods, but no MP3 player at all?
Lanibug: I resent the certificate since you didn’t receive it the first time. You might need to check your junk mail.
StephenH: Thanks for wearing our shirt and supporting us. Do you get many comments when you do wear it?
To everyone that’s won so far. You should have either received an email from me or iTunes at this point. Let me know if you didn’t get either and I’ll try to resend them.
And to everyone that hasn’t won yet, you just gotta pick an album.

BTW my iPod could use some new tunes. I have been enjoying the new Johnny Cash box set. (I’d choose Paisley, Lovett and Mary Chapin Carpenter in that order depending on what you have left AND supposin’ you select me for some free tunes.

Howdy from N.E. TEXAS. I just found this site link from Bluegrass FM and really have enjoyed it. I have MC’d Doyle Lawson several times and would sure like to win more than the picture album/CD. Thanks for your informative site right in the middle of the information superhighway!

Well would you look at that, the first 40 people to pick an album were all randomly chosen to win. Dave S., Mark, Gaither, Steve Bruce, T Phillips, Randolph Clark, Mikey, BT, and Reg Matthews: your gifts will be sent out shortly. Be sure to check your email.
That’s it folks, no more albums to give away. Thanks for all the kind words and for participating in our birthday giveaway. The winners for the Bear Family albums will be announced in a separate post a little later today.

Anybody who names their band after a beer has his “head” in a good place.
Randy Kohrs (and The Lites) – Old Photograph
I love his video for “Who’s Goin’ With Me” as well.

hi!
i would love to have Doyle Lawson’s “More Behind the Picture than the Wall” because last spring i took my family to a local bluegrass festival and Doyle Lawson was one of the acts. My young son is a budding mandolin player and i asked Doyle if i could take a picture of the two of them together. Doyle said sure and then came to my son, put his arm around him and posed for a picture. It was a digital camera and sadly a week or so later, my computer died and that picture was among many others that was sitting on my hard drive waiting to be put on a disc for safekeeping. i’d like to give the album to my son to help make up for that!
and i’d love to be entered to into the Bear Family Records giveaway as well.
many thanks,
bud

Porter Wagoner “Wagonmaster” the culmination of a great career! As a kid I watched Porter’s show each week and then replayed in in my head the rest of the week. Saturday’s were great Porter & Dolly, The Wilburn Brothers, Bill Anderson, Flatt & Scruggs shows one after the other.
Would love the Bear family sets too!!

Thanks for the gift, Brady! It’s very much appreciated. I’m listening to it (Josh Turner’s album) right now – great stuff!
I wasn’t sure how to do the iTunes gift thing before this, and I’ve always wanted to do something like that, so I’ll have to do something similar for my site. Very cool. Thanks again.

If it’s not too much trouble could you check to see if my email for the Bruce Robison cd bounced back to you. Or, if you can resend it that would be great. For some reason, it didn’t make it to me.
Thanks
