Terrence Howard Performing For Charley Pride, Dierks Bentley Lets Loose, And Rare Ray Price Recordings

  • We wrote about the Wheel of Fortune Country Music Star Week a couple of months back, well it’s almost here. February 12-16 will be the week that fans get to appear with country music stars to spin the wheel and solve some puzzles, woohoo.
  • Terrence Howard, who has been casted to play Charley Pride in an upcoming biopic on the singer’s life, will be performing in The Soul of Country concert in LA. Charley Pride will be one of attendees. Talk about pressure.
  • Dierks Bentley is on tour with Cross Canadian Ragweed, and from an article on CMT he appears to be having a lot of fun.

With his solid band backing his every move, he was singing into fans’ cell phones, drinking their beers and wearing their hats. Bentley’s interaction with the crowd — emphasizing party-boy antics over shallow conversation — is why he’s gained a reputation as one of country’s most engaging live acts.

I saw him open for George Strait here in Austin and he had a lot of energy, but he definitely didn’t leave the stage. I assume he had to turn it down a notch since what he did would reflect on George Strait.

  • Hmm, wonder what this is about:

Going to see country legend Merle Haggard play The Paramount on Sunday, Feb. 11? Here’s a hint of what you might expect:

“I wrote a thing yesterday mornin’ and we couldn’t get it recorded ’til about noon,” Haggard drawled to Seattle Times music critic Patrick MacDonald over the phone. “I think it may be the biggest thing that I’ve written in 30 years. And I’ll just give you the title of it and see what you think.

“It’s called ‘Hillary’. (He laughs out loud). Tell you what, it’s good!”

  • Rodney Atkins wrote “Watching You” after he found out from his son’s preschool teachers that he had been serenading the class with Atkins first hit, “If You’re Going Through Hell.”

“I went and had a talk with him about that, that it might not be appropriate for him to be singing that in school,” Atkins said. “That night, I started writing ‘Watching You.’”

The article, from the Houston Chronicle, also talks about Atkins not wanting to change his name to prevent confusion with Trace Adkins and Rhett Akins and living with three different families during his first year of life.

  • Jenna went to see Gary Allan last night at the San Antonio Rodeo, so maybe we’ll get a review from her later on, but for now MySA.com has some positive things to say about Allan’s performance.

With his rugged looks and been-there vocal tones, Allan is thoroughly convincing when he sings about the hopes and aspirations, the dark days and tough breaks that come along in life.

I personally think the guy should be getting more recognition than he is. He’s consistently putting out memorable songs and quickly established himself as one of my favorite artists.

  • CMT has some exciting news for Ray Price fans. On April 3rd 13 rare recordings will be released exclusively on iTunes for download. The album, titled Invitation to the Blues: Live Recordings, 1957-1963, the album will even include a song with some harmony vocals by Roger Miller.

Ditto on Gary Allan. He’s a direct descendent of the Bakersfield sound family of Buck/Merle/Dwight, and one of the best quality and most country artists on radio today. Perhaps some of his lack of recognition has to do with him being from California. Gary has been conspicuously overlooked in recent years for CMA nominations and other industry awards; of course, Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam never won any CMA awards either. Nashville likes its own.

I discovered him about five years ago when I bought Smoke Rings In The Dark. After that I bought all of his previous albums and his newer ones as they were released. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend any one of them, but I still remain partial to Smoke Rings In The Dark. It doesn’t get old no matter how many times I replay it.
