BEST COUNTRY SINGER-SONGWRITER: ELIZABETH COOK
In this town, aborted major-label deals are more common than seasonal colds. But rare is the turned-out artist who comes into her own like Cook has. There are songs on Welder, her latest, that couldn’t be more high-quality, down-to-earth country. And right alongside them is some knowing, fantastically detailed straight-talk on subjects such as shady hookups, sober sex and dating bar musicians. She gives them a sly delivery with her stone-cold country soprano. It’s all her, and it’s all good. JEWLY HIGHT - Kenny Chesney sold enough copies (183,000) of Hemingway’s Whiskey in its first week to earn his sixth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (and tenth on the country album chart), which puts him in second place among country acts with the most No. 1s: Garth Brooks has eight.
- On the topic of “Hemingway’s Whiskey,” Kris Kristofferson will record a version of the song for an upcoming Guy Clark tribute album. Austin Music Source notes that Ryan Bingham, Rodney Crowell, Jack Ingram, The Trishas, Terry Allen, Hayes Carll, Joe Ely, and Robert Earl Keen are all slated to make appearances as well. The album is scheduled for a Nov. 2011 release to coincide with Clark’s 70th birthday.

- Sugarland is providing a new download each week leading up to its release of The Incredible Machine on Oct. 19. The first two songs, “The Incredible Machine” (iTunes) and “Wide Open” (iTunes), are already available.
- Watch the theatrical trailer for True Grit. If you need an excuse for its inclusion here, it features Johnny Cash‘s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” plus Jeff Bridges is Bad Blake.

Those Sugarland preview tracks worked well on convincing me not to buy their album. I’ll never forget how wide the world is after hearing it repeated 300 times, and thats just in the 30 second preview stream.
Also previewed Taylors Speak Now song. Sounds like nothing she’s done in the past. Another song, another back door to wait at. Someone throw her half a dozen Grammy’s, she’s trying.

I would like to see Jamey Johnson, William Lee Golden and Ricky Skaggs all in the same room with all of their hair combined. They could also place bets of whose hair will fall down to the floor first.

@Lewis — have you seen the latest cover of Country Weekly feat. Toby Keith?? Somebody musta convinced him that growing a faux-JJ beard would garner more critical acclaim. Oy!

A shame Jamey’s “Guitar Song” is sliding down Billboard so quickly. As I mentioned previously, most times one needs a strong radio single and they simply won’t play him.
It is now sitting at #4 on the country albums and #3 on Billnoard 200. It is one behind Currington (gag).

That “True Grit” trailer looks fantastic. Was a bit worried- it’s a dangerous thing to try to remake The Duke but looks like the Cohen brothers pulled it off.

Only 8 tracks on the Keith Urban album?
October 10, 2010 at 1:29 pm
It becoming increasing popular to have cds out with 6-8 songs on it.
October 10, 2010 at 3:44 pm
Yes, but they don’t seem to be marketing it as an EP.
October 10, 2010 at 7:11 pm
The Keith Urban record will have eight songs at most retailers, but 15 (three more studio tracks and four live tracks) at Target.
October 10, 2010 at 7:26 pm
@Noeller I noticed, and thought the exact same thing!
October 11, 2010 at 8:17 am
The Keith Urban record will have eight songs at most retailers, but 15 (three more studio tracks and four live tracks) at Target.
Wow … that’s a huge difference.
October 11, 2010 at 8:26 am
Seems like a rip off. I understand at least giving ten songs and a couple bonus tracks at limited outlets, but eight songs with almost just as many being tapped as limited edition tracks seems to not be in the best interest of fans at all.
October 11, 2010 at 8:36 am
So unless you buy the deluxe Keith Urban version, you’re not even getting a full album? That’s a whole new level of record label craptitude.
October 11, 2010 at 8:43 am
I’m going to have to agree with Sam here. Craptitude indeed. But at least they’re not waiting a year to release the full version as a “platinum edition” to tempt all the fans who bought the first version – that would be even worse!
October 11, 2010 at 9:03 am
I think getting a whole album’s worth of songs being considered a “bonus” is worse though.
October 11, 2010 at 10:19 am
Didn’t Garth at some point near the end sell his albums exclusively at WalMart?
This seems like the next best/worst thing. The label isn’t quite offering Urban’s album exclusively at Target–they’re just giving a completely subpar product everywhere else.
I wouldn’t buy any of his albums anywhere, so it’s nothing to me.
October 11, 2010 at 12:05 pm
…take this urban record and shove it…
October 11, 2010 at 12:53 pm
If I remember correctly, the Garth deal with Wal-mart didn’t happen until after his studio albums. I believe special editions of the studio albums and his box set were exclusive Wal-Mart deals, but not regular albums.
October 11, 2010 at 12:58 pm
@Razor X yeah i meant its a growing tread to release an album with 8 tracks and not call it an EP. It’s been happending a lot with European artist and is starting to happend with American singers. The last album I bought an album it only had 8 songs on it and it was being marketed as an album.
October 11, 2010 at 1:20 pm
What was the price on that, Troy, compared to what you’d paid for a 10-12 track CD at the same place?
October 11, 2010 at 1:51 pm
Shades of RCA in the 80s.
October 11, 2010 at 1:51 pm
Thomas: “…take this urban record and shove it…”
Me: First, you’ll have to show me where to find it. I just went on the Target website. I see Target’s exclusive deluxe album from Taylor Swift, but I can’t see a thing about the exclusive deluxe Keith Urban album on there.
October 11, 2010 at 3:22 pm
Maybe that’s because it’s not due out for about another 5 weeks.
October 11, 2010 at 3:53 pm
That’s the weird thing, Jon. I would expect to see it being promoted as it is only 5 weeks out (and it’s already being promoted on Amazon.com as an 8-track set). And Target.com is already promoting other albums being released in November and December. Weird.
October 11, 2010 at 6:05 pm
I don’t know that it’s necessarily weird. Target’s going to want to focus on closer-in releases, like the Taylor Swift exclusive, Urban’s had other stuff going on – he had a promo campaign built around the cover that just wrapped up a couple of weeks ago. And besides, you’re hearing about the Target exclusive, etc. precisely because the album’s being promoted ;-).

@Barry Mazor it was import from the UK so it cost a little more than usual because of dollars and pound differce. It was 7 pound/11 dollars for 8 track one and it was 10 pounds/16 dollars for their 12 track one.
