Taylor Swift – “Our Song”
Taylor Swift’s first two releases were quite amateurish, and while it’s clear that Taylor isn’t going to deviate from the theme of teenage “love” anytime soon, this single is certainly her best to date.
I thought I’d clicked the wrong link when things kicked off with fiddle and banjo. The melody is pleasant and Taylor’s descriptions of the everyday sounds that constitute “our song” have a down-home appeal if one ignores the thinly-veiled references to adolescent dating. I couldn’t help but smile when Taylor wrapped up the chorus by revealing that she’s been “asking God if we can play it again.”
Still, things aren’t perfect. This song’s theme is more universal than anything that Taylor has released to date, but it’s still difficult for those removed from teenage angst to relate. An ear-splitting vocal mistake in the final rendition of the chorus drags the song down closer to talent-show fare. Nonetheless, the fact that I liked it despite my prejudices says a lot about its quality.

I was really pleased when I heard this was her new single–I just think this is an excellent example in songwriting. And that’s where her strength is, not in her singing.

This is a really catchy song, although it reminds me of something that would have come out from one of the alternative bands that was big at the end of the 90s.

One of the lyrics puzzles me – “talk real slow, cause it’s late and you don’t want your momma to know”.
SLOW? She should have said low. I talk LOW when I don’t want anyone to hear me.

We’re not crazy, it’s the world! My 20 year old neice loves the song, and can’t understand the difference between low and slow. I’ve threatened to yell real slow, to see if the light comes on in her head…

Taylor Swift song is amazing second best song of this year. Best teardrops on my guitar. The comment about talk real slow, cause it’s late and you don’t want your momma to know. When people talk slower their voice tend to be lower unless they are repeating what they just said

Skip and Peter,
I’ve had the same problem with that lyric as well! I’ve made the argument, but nobody seemed to share my confusion. So, I’m excited to read that you guys agree with me…or that I agree with you.
By the way, I liked this song, it’s just that the line really gets on my nerves when I hear it.

I am rather confused by some of the comments here? Has Taylor Swift said in an interview that she reads the 9153? or is this site secretly a front for her fanclub? I always suspected as much.

Heh, Jeremy, it’s not a front for her fan club, but you would be surprised by everyone that does read The 9513.

I have one thing to say about this: awful. Let me point out a few things:
“…one-hand feel on the steering wheel/The other on my… (pause. Yes, this pause is important, because it implies that she is going to be saying something else, something perhaps not as child/family friendly as the actual lyrics imply, which I find rather interesting, as I shall point out later.)… heart.”
“When we’re on the phone and you talk real slow/ ‘Cause it’s late and your mama don’t know”
First, the infamous pause… Why?
“Because it fits so perfectly with the rhythm, duh!”
Oh, forgive me, I was under the impression that she was going to say something else, like maybe he was fondling her. I’m so glad she changed my impression at the last minute.
“She would never say something like that!”
You’re right! Because she talks to God every night, how silly of me. But wait… do Christians sneak out at night to visit their boyfriend or girlfriend, knowingly disobeying their mother and father?
“Uhmm… I guess.”
So, that means she’s a hypocrite? And all the little kiddies that love to listen to her are equally as ignorant.
“Well, that’s…”
And what about that line where they talk real slow?
“Because it’s late and they don’t want to get caught!”
Oh! So they’re, once more, blatantly disobeying their parents. And what’s worse, the songwriter can’t even use her knowledge of the English language to write a line that properly makes any sense at all! What does talking slowly have to do with avoiding being caught by your mother? Nothing. You can talk slow, and still talk loud, but you can also talk really fast whilst maintaining a minimal vocal volume. So, enlighten me, if you will, as to what the hell this line is supposed to mean? If she were any where near a level of decent intelligence, she would have known that she could have used the word “low” and still maintained her rhyming scheme. Thus, (that’s right, Meg, I just used the word “thus.” I guess I’m a wanna-be. Though, I find the insults of one who can’t even spell the word “is” properly to be rather poor in nature.) her lyrics would actually make sense, and I would probably not even be writing this little rant. Get over her. She’s just another rise to the top idol, just the same as you see every year on American Idol, who fade into obscurity two years later. And I’m sure the fact that almost everyone finds her sooo attractive has nothing to do with her popularity at all. I’m sure it’s all because of her songwriting abilities. That’s got to be it!
For those of you who had to actually look up half my words in a dictionary, then I suppose that Taylor Swift is right up your ally. The fact that she appeals to a young group of punk, know-it-all kids is more reason for me to believe that everything I’ve said here was all for naught.
May 19, 2008 at 1:58 pm Permalink
JayJay, should we question your intelligence and write off your opinion because you wrote ally instead of alley? Sure Taylor’s use of “slow” instead of “low” is perplexing, but that diatribe is a bit much. Calm down.

When you say ‘mistake’, are you referring to the portion of the final chorus where the performance makes a brief approach to recitation, rather than singing? Because it seems clear to me that was an intentional measure; it’s quite common for singers to switch up the performance of the final chorus, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be part of the segue into a coda.
(And apologies for the late post, I’m kind of out of the loop on all but the most major players in current “country” music. I’d heard Swift’s ‘Tim McGraw’ a few times when it came out, but found the song’s handling of its subject so immature that I pointedly ignored her subsequent singles until it became obvious that I was missing out on an artist of some talent.)

How dare you put teenage “love” in quotation marks. Not like that REAL love grown-ups have, right? The kind where 50% of them divorce? The kind where it all kinda starts revolving around kids and work? The kind where they get all jaded and been-there-done-that and don’t even remember why they fell in love in the first place?
You can’t say all grown-up “love” is like that, because it’s not, just like you can’t say all teenage “love” is the crush-of-the-week.
Also, you say the song’s theme is more “universal” than most of hers, with the implicit idea that anything teen-specific is therefore somehow less relatable to the “general population” (and yes, I put that in quotes, as it’s a concept I’m highly skeptical of) and therefore unlikeable by those people.
What about songs about divorce? Lots of people have never got divorced, guess those are niche songs. And songs about kids? Lots of people don’t have kids either. Or even like kids. Niche songs again. Farmer songs? I know it’s country music, but how many of us ACTUALLY live on a farm? So clearly those can’t appeal outside their target demographic of farm people. War and soldier songs? Well, obviously only soldiers/veterans and their families can possibly relate to those.
I think it’s safe to say that most of the above isn’t true. So why do people write off Taylor so quickly? The fact is, anyone over the age of 13 is or was a teenager, so you’d think it would appeal to much MORE of the population than those farm songs. Grown-up snobbery, that’s what it is.
May 7, 2009 at 12:51 pm Permalink
Ok, I will admit this young lady has talent when it comes to playing an instrument, she also can write young girl songs if you are from that genre which would be appealing, but when she sings live, and i have worked at her concerts, she can not carry a tune in a bucket. She also was terrible on the music awards. I think she should stick to writing.
