First off, Happy New Year to everyone. To start the new year off, we’ve compiled a list of the best songs from 2007. The staff had a lengthy discussion about which songs should be available for nomination for such a list and we decided that a song had to be an original recording on an [...]

The Year in Review: Comeback Kids
This is the first of a series of Year in Review articles that will appear on The 9513 between now and the new year.
In my mind, Porter Wagoner will forever epitomize country music in 2007.
Some may object to my hanging an entire year on the back of an artist who didn’t sniff the radio [...] -
“It’s the music of what I do and how I live” - Michael Martin Murphey
Roger Holland posted his in-depth “The Best Country Music of 2007″ list at PopMatters. These top ten lists are like finger prints, no two are exactly alike, but I learned a few interesting tidbits from Mr. Holland’s comments.
As of December 4th, thirty-four of Anne Murray’s original recordings have been available digitally.
Doug Freeman gives a brief [...]Continue reading "“It’s the music of what I do and how I live” - Michael Martin Murphey"

Todd Snider and John Carter Cash Play Part In New Loretta Album
Singer-songwriter Larry Joe Taylor–who doesn’t listen to mainstream music–participated in Galleywinter’s 20 Questions feature.
Your music and festivals really promote songwriting above show. What made you want to really focus on the songwriting aspect? And, who are some of your favorite songwriters?

Patty Loveless Gears Up For Her Third Trip On the Santa Train
Gary Allan has no balls, as illustrated by his latest album — Living Hard — and just so you know, Ronnie Dunn and John Anderson are merely average Nashville singers, too. I wish I was just making this stuff up, folks.
Tours featuring two mega-stars are in. First it was Kenny Chesney and LeAnn Rimes, then [...]Continue reading "Patty Loveless Gears Up For Her Third Trip On the Santa Train"

Gary Allan Divulges Songwriting Tip From Harlan Howard
Chet Flippo gives kudos to Beverly Keel for her open letter to Jessica Simpson, questions her role in the dreadful interpretation of Dukes of Hazzard for the big screen, and has a few words for those singers from other genres who seem to always show up and proclaim that they’ve always been country.
One of the [...]Continue reading "Gary Allan Divulges Songwriting Tip From Harlan Howard"

Sammy Kershaw’s Political Bid Fizzled By Incumbent
Porter Wagoner remains in a Nashville-area hospital and has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
With four kids at home Kelly Willis put her musical career on the back burner. She didn’t feel like she had time to write until an interviewer reminded her that she could do other people’s songs. One thing led to another [...]Continue reading "Sammy Kershaw’s Political Bid Fizzled By Incumbent"

Merle Haggard Debuts At Number 1 On Bluegrass Charts
The Politico has a great “story behind the song” type feature about how “For These Times” was written and eventually ended up on Martina McBride’s latest album, Waking Up Laughing. Inspiration is everywhere.
It begins in Pittsburgh on election night 2006. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), losing to Democrat Robert P. Casey Jr. by a wide margin, [...]Continue reading "Merle Haggard Debuts At Number 1 On Bluegrass Charts"

Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, & Barbara Mandrell Inducted Into Music City Walk of Fame
I’ve posted a number of interviews with Billy Joe Shaver and I may be a little biased, but I think the interview that Brady scored for The 9513 is the best yet. I was giddy like a school girl when he walked next door to Waterloo Records and played me the recording.
On November 20 Time [...]

We've labored long and hard to come up with our list of the Top 10 Country Albums of 2008. Click here to see who claimed the honor of the year's top album, as chosen by The 9513's staff and writers.
Don’t confuse disappointing with worst, as that list would most likely be dominated by obscure indie knockoff bands along with a couple of mainstream releases. There has to be a modicum of expectation that’s dashed upon the release of an album for it to qualify for the year’s most disappointing.
Join host Kelly Dearmore as he shines the light on several noteworthy album releases you might have missed and interviews various artists, from Sarah Borges to Trent Willmon and Reckless Kelly to Wade Bowen, in the first two episode of The 9513 podcast.
Jim Malec counts down the top 20 country music news stories of 2008. How many times do you think John Rich will be mentioned?
