Grand Ole Opry Finds New Home With XM Satellite Radio
Houston Press ranks the 10 worst songs to ever come out of Houston. Both Kenny Rogers and Clint Black make the list for “You Decorated My Life” and “I Raq and Roll” (which sounds horrible from the title alone). Both artists also make The Houston 100, a list of Houston’s top songs ever. The list […]

Here’s To Hank Williams
Referring to Joe Nichols’ new album Edward Morris asks, “So what is the ‘real thing’ when it comes to Joe Nichols? Is he the brooding, introspective soul conveyed in ‘The Impossible’ and ‘If Nobody Believed in You’ or the party animal implicit in ‘Tequila’ and ‘What’s a Guy Gotta Do’?”
“I don’t think they’re two different […] -
Townes Van Zandt To Be Awarded The President’s Award At AMA
Before you go out and buy The Great Lost Performance from Johnny Cash that was recently released, head over to Twangville and see what they have to say about the album.
This release is billed as The Great Lost Performance, but I’m not sure I’d go that far. It is a rollicking good time but […]Continue reading "Townes Van Zandt To Be Awarded The President’s Award At AMA"

Joe Nichols Covered By…Nickelback
Man, Jim and Matt did such an excellent job running The 9513 while Brady and I were gone I’m a little scared about coming back for fear I might mess something up. Thanks a bunch, Jim and Matt, for taking over the extra duties. Brady got hitched in Washington, and I’ll be damned if that […]

New Albums From Lyle Lovett And Joe Nichols Get Some Love
Lots of activity on the Billboard album and single charts this week, although the top spots are still firmly locked up by Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney. Luke Bryan hopped to No. 2 on the album chart while George Strait’s tune “How ‘Bout The Cowgirls” springs from No. 35 to No. 26 in its second […]

Martin Sheen Claims Bush Bullied Dixie Chicks
I get the distinct feeling that Martin Sheen doesn’t care for George Bush after the comments he recently made over the President’s handling of the Dixie Chicks incident four years ago.
“If George W. Bush were a true Christian, like he proclaims himself to be, you know what he would have done? He’d have invited them […]Continue reading "Martin Sheen Claims Bush Bullied Dixie Chicks"

Mailbag: I’ll Be Hurtin’ When I Wake Up On The Floor
When is Toby Keith’s latest CD going to be released?
Technically, his latest CD has already been released. All kidding aside, his next CD, Big Dog Daddy, is slated for release on June 12, 2007. - Brady
Who sings “I Miss You Daddy”?
Songwriter Karen Mason. You can buy a CD or MP3 of the song, and read […]Continue reading "Mailbag: I’ll Be Hurtin’ When I Wake Up On The Floor"

Who Will the Opry Induct Next?
It’s been over a year and a half since Dierks Bentley became the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, and since he joined two Opry members have died and others (like Stonewall Jackson) have had public rifts with the famous institution. While the Opry has had longer membership droughts, since 1990 the they […]

Concert Review: George Jones at the Ryman
You know that you’ve purchased tickets to the right concert when there are as many A-list recording artists watching in awe from the wings as there are fans in the audience.
Maybe that wasn’t exactly the case for George Jones’ Sunday night show at a packed Ryman Auditorium, but it sure seemed like it. While the […]Continue reading "Concert Review: George Jones at the Ryman"

Mailbag: Second Edition
Last month Jenna posted the first edition of the mailbag, where the questions don’t actually come from email, but rather the search queries in our stats program. Today I’m bringing you the second edition. Since search queries are generally simple, the questions don’t get too complex. With that said, let’s get started.
The most popular questions […]

Forgotten Artists: Goldie Hill Had Carl Smith and Goldie Hill been born 30 or 40 years later, they might have been like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw–the dominant married couple in country music.
Forgotten Artist: Wynn Stewart Both Buck Owens and Merle Haggard have cited Wynn Stewart as a major influence on their careers, yet somehow, he was never able to translate his enormous talent into extended and consistent success for himself.
Miranda Lambert - “More Like Her” This kind of material, as opposed to her tough-chick-done-wrong romps like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Gunpowder and Lead,” is where her real promise lies
Joey Rory - “Cheater, Cheater” It’s actually downright frivolous, but that just makes it all the more fun. And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.
In this exclusive interview with The 9513, the Show Dog Records trio talks about growing up around Waylon and Jessi Colter, and about how those experiences have helped shaped their music as they set off on their own country music journey.
One of an emerging wave of artists empowered by decreasing production costs and a rapidly changing distribution landscape, Kelleigh Bannen has taken a do-it-yourself approach to her debut album, Radio Skies.
