January ‘08 Album Review Wrap-Up
Catherine Britt - Little Wildflower
Catherine Britt released her third album, Little Wildflower, in her native Australia. This album, produced by Brett Beavers, attempts to cover ground in both contemporary and traditional country and while her contemporary contributions are decent, they blend in with current offerings from other artists. However, Britt’s performance and smoky vocals […] -
Artists to Watch in 2008 (Part 3 of 5): Buzzworthy
We’re halfway home, kids! So far this week we’ve looked at mostly familiar faces–a handful of veterans trying to maneuver their way through the obstacles of the industry and make an impact in ‘08. Chris Cagle Arrested For Punching Fan’s Boyfriend In the Face
After performing at a charity benefit Chris Cagle reportedly punched a fan’s boyfriend in the face. Reports say that Cagle declined to sign an autograph for a woman who then became verbally abusive. Bouncers were escorting the woman and her boyfriend out of the club when an undisclosed incident occurred at which time Cagle allegedly […]

Songs About Hank Not Sung By Guys Named Hank
I’ve always been a bit skeptical about the amount of praise heaped upon Hank Williams. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy his music immensely and carry Hank Williams Gold wherever my truck blindly leads me. I just figured people paid him lip service because of his position in history. That’s why I was surprised when […]

Joe Nichols Covered By…Nickelback
Man, Jim and Matt did such an excellent job running The 9513 while Brady and I were gone I’m a little scared about coming back for fear I might mess something up. Thanks a bunch, Jim and Matt, for taking over the extra duties. Brady got hitched in Washington, and I’ll be damned if that […]

I’m proud to introduce a new feature on The 9513. On the first day of every month, one of our editors will present a countdown of his or her favorite songs within a given category.

Marty Stuart’s Sixth Annual Late Night Jam
One wouldn’t think that on a stage that featured two country music Hall of Famers, five Grand Ole Opry members and several major label artists that the radio DJ acting as the night’s master of ceremonies would come closest to stealing the show. Thirty minutes before curtain, Eddie Stubbs announced that Marty Stuart’s annual benefit […]

Who Will the Opry Induct Next?
It’s been over a year and a half since Dierks Bentley became the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, and since he joined two Opry members have died and others (like Stonewall Jackson) have had public rifts with the famous institution. While the Opry has had longer membership droughts, since 1990 the they […]

Album Review: Ashley Monroe - Satisfied
I’ve already written on this site about how worried I am that the imploding Sony label has ruined the career of one of my favorite new artists, Miranda Lambert. Even if Lambert’s upcoming release succeeds, I will not forgive Sony if they succeed in squandering the potential of Columbia recording artist Ashley Monroe, who […]

In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.
Forgotten Artist: David Rogers David Rogers (1936-1993) is proof of the adage that it’s great to be on a major label, but only if the label is truly behind you.
Forgotten Artist: Charley Pride For the ’70s, Billboard has Charley listed as its third ranking singles artist behind only Conway Twitty and Merle Haggard.
In this exclusive interview with The 9513, the Show Dog Records trio talks about growing up around Waylon and Jessi Colter, and about how those experiences have helped shaped their music as they set off on their own country music journey.
One of an emerging wave of artists empowered by decreasing production costs and a rapidly changing distribution landscape, Kelleigh Bannen has taken a do-it-yourself approach to her debut album, Radio Skies.
