- Darrell Scott has written a number of great songs over the years that he’s not only been fortunate enough to record, but have others record as well. In a new feature on Country Universe, Leeann Ward lists her favorite songs written by Scott and the performance that she she considers the best, whether that’s by Scott himself or artists like Tim McGraw, Travis Tritt or the Dixie Chicks.
- Juli Thanki digs Journeyman’s Wager, the new solo album from Chuck Mead.
Mead’s “worn out singer” reappears throughout Journeyman’s Wager, almost to the point of making this a concept album—luckily, Mead exercises some restraint on this front. But a must-listen is “A Long Time Ago”, which details the sacrifices made and ideals lost in search of a music career—it’s probably one of the most depressing songs to be released this year, but it’s also one of the best.
- Kenny Chesney returned to Dallas on Sunday to play a free show after his May 2 concert in the area was shortened by rain. More fans showed up the second time around and Chesney rewarded them with a longer than typical set.
- Following the second season premier of Can You Duet on June 20, CMT will debut The Singing Bee, a new karaoke-style singing competition that tests contestants’ knowledge of lyrics to well-known songs. Sixty percent of the songs will be country while the other 40 percent will consist of popular favorites from other genres.
- Montgomery Gentry is joining forces with Cracker Barrel and the Wounded Warrior Project to release a new CD, For Our Heroes, on May 25. The 12-song disc will include past favorites, one new song and four songs that previously received a limited release.
- LeAnn Rimes and her husband Dean Sheremet put their Nashville house on the market, which is totally unrelated to rumors of Rimes’ affair with her Lifetime TV-move co-star Eddie Cibrian, who she randomly ran into at a recent Los Angeles Lakers basketball game.
- Volumes 1 & 2 of Ray Charles‘ Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music will be reissued with new liners notes on June 2.
- Rhonda Vincent had a minor freak-out and ran off stage this past weekend when a bug bit her on the toe.

All you need to know about the CMT Music Awards is that Def Leppard is nominated for 2 awards and “Bob That Head” is nominated for 1.
The Rhonda Vincent video is hilarious, and her band has got some pretty good improv skills.

You forgot that Ashley Monroe’s Satisfied album was finally released today…

Thanks for the reminder. I added it in.

LA Concert Alert: Justin Townes Earle will be here in LA at McCabe’s Guitar Shop on Sunday night (May 24) and tickets are $ 16. I’ll be there incognito…
If Lanibug hadn’t reminded you of Ashely Monroe’s official release of “Satisfied” today, I would have.
Journeyman’s Wager is a good album and I’d give it a 3.75 Stars out of 5. I especially like the song “She Got The Ring, And I Got The Finger”. That would make a nice couplet along with Sarah Johns’ “The One In The Middle”.
Thanks for the Rhonda Vincent video link. Great stuff!

The Geezinslaws had a song on their Eclectic Horseman album titled “I Gave Her My Ring,” and as you’ve probably guessed, they got the finger too.

I find it interesting that Carrie Underwood only got one nomination — how many videos did she put out last year?? And no nomination for best female video?? Suits me fine…

isn’t that a fromholtz song on the geezinslaws albbum. its gotta be the same one that steven wrote.
May 19, 2009 at 1:55 pm Permalink
Indeed it is. I’d never heard the Fromholz version before, but it’s on his MySpace.

Kenny Chesney was also shut out of the Male Video category so my guess is that their respective fan bases don’t believe that the CMT awards are worth the effort it takes to vote.
Wasn’t Kellie Pickler one of the biggest winners last year? That tells me all I need to know about that awards show!

LOL I loved the video of Rhonda Vincent! Also, what a terrific band- without missing a beat, the bass player jumps right in and continue the song, injected with sly humor.

Speaking of Ashley Monroe, she will be performing on this coming Thursday night’s “Classic Country Opry” show along with Joey + Rory, Elizabeth Cook, Holly Williams and others. It starts at 7 PM Nashville time and you can listen online at WSM’s website. I’ll be in a state of country music hog heaven while listening to this show!

Just a heads up to any Jamey Johnson fans, he has a song on the new Oak Ridge Boys album called “Mama’s Table”.
Pretty much the only song on the album that is very good, but worth listening to.

I watched the Rhonda clip. I wonder if it was planed. Since the one member of the rage made the comment we better call a Toe Truck” It is still a funny clip.

Just thought you’d like to know…

The Cactus Cafe site says they’re playing two shows on the 22nd. I’d be interested in going, but $35 is a bit steep.
May 19, 2009 at 10:10 pm Permalink
$35 is a little steep…but the show in nashville is $25 with Justin Townes Earle opening….one of the first times i am not jealous of Austin!!!!

Naw, you can tell – well, at least I can; I know all those guys except Ben – that the band was taken by surprise. Hunter’s just quick-witted.

For Brady: Aaron Watson and Sunny Sweeney will be performing at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX this Sunday. I’d much rather see Aaron and Sunny than Justin Townes Earle that day, but at least JTE performs in the LA area unlike those other two pesky Texans….
May 20, 2009 at 6:44 am Permalink
I’d pay $35 for that show.
May 20, 2009 at 10:17 am Permalink
Roger, lucckkkyyyy…
It’s one of the more expensive shows I’ve seen listed at the Cactus, which I guess is because they don’t tour much over here and I’m just not willing to pay a premium for that. I did see Guy Clark at the Cactus for about the same price, but he’s capable of selling 1,000 or so seats at the ballroom right upstairs for that price.
Rick, Jamey Johnson will also be playing in New Braunfels on Sunday, so I’m going to try to make it out to that one since he rarely comes to Texas. He’s actually coming to Austin on 7/4 as well, but I’ll be out of town.
