Sugarland Drops Miley For First Chart-Topper On Billboard 200
- Sugarland’s sales saw a 45% decline, but it was still enough to take the top spot from Miley Cyrus on the Billboard 200 chart.
- Leave it to Jamey Johnson to turn the often humorous Photocrap blog serious.
- Jamey Johnson makes another appearance on Unplugged at Studio 330 next week, but for now you can go check out Taylor Swift’s interview and song selections for her own Unplugged session.
- Country, California’s John Maglite caught a recent Dolly Parton performance at Sacramento’s ARCO Arena and shares his thoughts on the night’s proceedings.
I saw Dolly Parton live in concert last night. Well, I guess it was her. From my lower-level seat halfway between the stage and the rafters at Sacramento’s ARCO Arena, what I actually saw was a blond wig atop a tiny, expressive, top-heavy body. I never did get to see the face. Given the size of the venue, I had assumed that there would be video screens to bring the action closer to us poor saps off in the distance. Wrong. Still, to Parton’s credit, I never felt like a forgotten observer.
- Cynthia Fuchs reviewed the Johnny Cash documentary, Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music, that aired on PBS last night.
- Laura Cantrell bemoans the lack of women in the Country Music Hall of Fame. She notes that of the 105 member roster, only 14 are women, and two of those weren’t even artists. She also provides an introduction to several less heralded women (Bessie Smith, Mildred Bailey, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rose Maddox, Molly O’ Day, Jean Shepard, Skeeter Davis and Ola Belle Reed) and a link to one of their songs.

Forgotten Artists: Cal Smith - When the Florida Sunshine Opry (Eustis, FL) booked its first “name” (non-local) act back in 1999, the act they chose was Cal Smith. No wonder, since Cal is an excellent singer, musician, storyteller and showman. | View more artists featured in Paul W. Dennis' recurring "Forgotten Artists" feature »

For the second episode of The 9513 Country Music Podcast, your host Kelly Dearmore caught up with two seemingly different artists in Sarah Borges and Trent Willmon. Take a listen.
Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.
In this exclusive interview for The 9513, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook talks about life with the band, as well as A Place to Land, the group’s current album, which has charted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart on two separate occasions

Wow, a short news day.

No comment on the actual news?

I think that was a comment on the actual news.

It was more a comment on the quantity of actual news, I guess.

Wow, slow news day. :)
Jamey Johnson rulez. I even got some of my music snob budz over at Altcountrytab.ca interested in this dude.

Good call on adding the David Rogers audio. It’s nice to be able to read about him and listen to him all in the same place. I’m definitely more interested now.
It’s the weirdest thing to finish writing something before I pass out at night and wake up to find it on The 9513 (even if it is on a slow news day). Thanks for the plug… it’s always appreciated.

I think that the chatter around the slow news day has made it not as slow…..

An interesting point about Women and the country music hall of fame. Something I have always thought was lacking. However, if you look back in the grand scheme of country music, men have generally dominated the industry, so it’s understandable. I think Reba should be getting close to be letting in. Also, not sure but are Lorreta, Tammy, or Barbara Mandrell in the Hall of Fame?

Greg,
Loretta and Tammy are members of the Hall of Fame. Emmylou Harris of course was inducted this year. I would expect Barbara Mandrell and Reba to follow in the next 2-4 years.

I’ve been to ARCO several times and have never seen them put big screens up. At least the artists, like Garth and Dolly, make it seem like you’re right in the middle of the action :-)

It looks like Jamey is growing his hair longer (all the way around). He visited WSIX and you can watch the videos with several songs performed live:
http://wsix. com/pages/personality_hfoundation. html
There are some funny stories on the video.
The only thing missing on Jamey’s new album is “Leave You Alone.” It’s still a great piece of work with what is on there. He’s going to have a live chat on his website at 7PM tonight. It will be interesting to hear his take on songs from the album.

Hopefully every addition to the “Forgotten Artist” series will now include audio links so we can hear what we’ve been missing! Thanks for adding those….
I always enjoy it when Laura Cantrell gets on her soapbox about the lack of respect paid to women (in an overall sense) throughout the history of country music. Let’s face it that men have traditionally held most of the positions of power in the country music industry and its been a “good old boys club”. I’m glad that Laura is so passionate about this issue.
Jamey Johnson has a short interview segment on GAC’s “On The Streets” episode this week and he really seemed to be enjoying himself. (They even had a short interview with Carrie Rodriguez where Carrie and Suzanne Alexander were discussing Lucinda Williams. Suzanne is a closet Americana fan! lol)
