Steve Martin’s Leaked Tour Rider; Dale Watson, Trace Adkins, Little Big Town, & Sugarland Schedule New Albums
-
A few details from Steve Martin‘s leaked tour rider:
- Wardrobe: Nothing constricting or scratchy, except for Steve’s thong.
- Venue must have Bela Fleck on speed dial, in case Steve’s feeling lazy.
- Golf cart(s) must be available to transport Steve and the Steep Canyon Rangers from dressing room area to the stage. If distance is less than thirty (30) feet, Steve and the Steep Canyon Rangers will do a couple laps around the venue prior to show, so it doesn’t go to waste.
- Austin honky tonker Dale Watson is scheduled to release a new album, Carryin’ On, Aug. 24 with several members of the Nashville A-Team backing him, including Lloyd Green, Pete Wade, and Hargus Robbins.
- Speaking of honky tonkers, The Boston Globe’s June Wuff recommends Girl Howdy and its new release Honky Tonk Hair. (MySpace)
- Sunny Sweeney‘s brand new single, “From A Table Away,” is available for purchase. (Amazon | iTunes)
- Del McCoury and Jim “Texas Shorty” Chancellor have been chosen by the National Endowment for the Arts to receive National Heritage Fellowships for their artistic excellence and efforts to conserve America’s cultures for future generations. (via The Bluegrass Blog)
- Country California: Quotable Country – 06/27/10 Edition
- Trace Adkins‘ new release, Cowboy’s Back In Town, is due on Aug. 17.
- Little Big Town‘s The Reason Why is scheduled for an Aug. 24 release.
- The fourth release from Sugarland, titled The Incredible Machine, is due out Oct. 19.
- His audience may be smaller, but Vince Gill says his music is only getting better:
“What’s interesting in a life like this is that it has waves of popularity and not so much popularity and this is one of those waves of (unpopularity on the country music charts),” he said. “You are not being noticed as much, but maybe some of your best work is being done. You feel like it’s not like the days where you had the big run, but it’s really OK. I wish that I was still having hits and all that, but I’m trying to. I do know the records are better and the songs are better, and I take a lot of pride and comfort in that.”
- Big Kenny has a weekly gig at 12th and Porter in Nashville.
- Stream “Up On The Ridge,” “Pride,” and “Bad Angel” from Dierks Bentley‘s new album on NPR.
- Out of all the articles written about Larry Jon Wilson‘s passing, this one by his friend Don Rhodes in The Augusta Chronicle is by far the best.
- The memorial service for Larry Jon Wilson was held on Sunday.
[...] Tyler Wilson recalled asking his father what he needed as he lay sick in the hospital.
“Dr. Kevorkian,” said the singer, songwriter and storyteller, who made the Augusta area his home.
It was typical Larry Jon, always using humor to lighten things up, his son said.
- Watch new videos from Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney and Steve Miller Band, Montgomery Gentry, Rodney Atkins, Steve Azar, and Troy Olsen over at the CMT blog.
- American Songwriter is sponsoring a contest for one songwriter to join the Zac Brown Band on its Sailing Southern Ground cruise and perform his/her music.
- Vintage Books plans to reissue Loretta Lynn‘s memoir, Loretta Lynn: Coal Miner’s Daughter, on Sept. 21.
- In the extras from an interview with Parade magazine, Willie Nelson commented on Nashville’s bias toward people who were different:
“The executives in music were a little prejudiced and biased about someone’s appearance. They never stopped to think that maybe that long-haired hippie out there might have a little talent. There are a lot of people that hate change and want to keep things the way they’ve always been. Nashville was one of the last places to be lenient toward the hippies and the long hairs. That’s one of the things that held it back.”
And don’t miss Dotson Radar’s profile on Willie in the same publication.
- The band I See Hawks In L.A. are offering a free download of its song “Byrd From West Virginia,” which is about the recently deceased Senator Robert C. Byrd.
- The newest Kevin Welch record, A Patch of Blue Sky, earned high marks from Jim Caligiuri in The Austin Chronicle.
- Roy Rogers‘ horse Trigger is expected to fetch between $100,000 and $200,000 in an upcoming auction.
- Listen to Griffin House perform “River City Lights” with backing vocals from Alison Krauss.

I’m very excited for Little Big Town’s new album!

Hmm, Kevin Welch moves from Nashville to Texas, and Smilin’ Jim decides that his music’s reached a new level. There’s a stunning surprise.
By the way, a sharp-eyed reader of the first page’s worth of the NEA’s announcement of the National Heritage Fellowships will notice that it refers to nine winners but lists only eight artists. You have to scroll down a bit further to find that the ninth recipient – of the specially denominated Bess Lomax Hawes fellowship – is the fabulous Judy McCulloh, recently retired from the University of Illinois Press. It is impossible to overstate her contribution, and the contribution of the Music In American Life series she started and oversaw, to the study of American roots music – country, bluegrass, blues, folk and more. The IBMA gave her its Distinguished Achievement award years ago, and it’s nice to see the NEA catch up.

Those “A Team” musicians backing Dale Watson on his new CD–What’s their average age?–75??

Steve Martin’s supposed “Tour Rider” is a hoot! Are you sure Steve didn’t lift this from “Farce The Music” or “Country California”?
“Girl Howdy” sounds like an amateurish bar band, but considering they are based in Massachusetts I give them kudos for even trying to be real honky tonkers. If June Wuff was to hear a song like “Honky Tonk Hangover” from Miss Leslie she might consider it akin to a religious experience…
Thanks for the NPR links to the new Dierks Bentley songs! Any token interest I might have had in hearing the entire album has evaporated! Is this what one might call “Half-Assed Grass”? Hmm…
Shouldn’t that I See Hawks in LA song be rewritten and recorded as “Dead Byrd Brain From West Virginia”? I really think US Senators should be limited to two terms to prevent political dynasties from being established, well at least for democrats anyway. Oh well…

In the eloquent words of Chris N.: bite me.

You might give it a week before you hammer on a dead man.

Love the quotes from Vinnie and Willie!! Great wisdom from true superstars.
Pretty funny and cool that there’s a group called “Girl Howdy” :) ……Now, if only Jeff Steele was involved somehow!! :)

Have we ever had any other Senators appear on the Opry?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTL4lec5H50
June 29, 2010 at 9:38 pm
Yes, Lamar Alexander has appeared on the Opry.
June 30, 2010 at 4:24 am
Yeah; Alexander and, I believe, a number of Tennessee senators ovcer the years.
June 30, 2010 at 5:29 pm
lol Girl Howdy.
Is that Jeff Steele’s sister’s new band?
June 30, 2010 at 6:37 pm
There’s a couple of recognizable names in Girl Howdy – Paula Bradley from Uncle Earl and Rose Sinclair, who’s played accordion, keyboard, etc. on a lot of regional recordings.

Rick – you’re probably correct, Steve Martin would need to steal jokes from a country music blog. As for your comments on the recently deceased Senator…you definitely remind me of school on Saturday. But I congratulate you for writing eight sentences without using “Odumbo” — guess that’s progress.

Dale Watson has a great voice & a jam up band backing him up, but he needs a song writer to really get back to the flavor of old country. Lord, Please let Harland Howard come back long enough to write Dale some hit material.
August 27, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Texas Honky-Tonker Dale Watsons voice is deep, cool and warm at the same time. He can sound soft when he wants, he can sound rough when he needs it. Hes voice is all-round!
Of course Dale can write. It could still be a good song even if its not a hit.
Im goin to buy hes forthcoming album, ah yes!

Hey, thanks for the nice mention and linking my LJW column. I have been thinking about him almost every week. What a great loss! At least we still have his music and videos.
