You included AJs “Buicks to the Moon” and that godawful Frank Sinatra garbage and didn’t include “I Don’t Know A Thing About Love” or “Thats Somebody Else’s Moon?”…

What about the perfect moon song: I Don’t Know A Thing About Love The Moon Song by Conway Twitty? That was a #1 for him 25 years ago! Also, what about Michael Johnson’s second #1 hit from 1987, The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder? You missed out on two gems right there!

I’d have to add “The Moon over Georgia” by Shenendoah to that list. I like Blake Shelton’s “Underneath the Same Moon” as well, if for no other reason than the chilling instrumentation.

“Missouri Moon” was written by Rhonda’s fellow Missouran (and sometimes co-writer of mine) Jennifer Strickland, also responsible for several fine cuts (including recent bluegrass chart-topper “I Can Go Back Anytime”) by Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain. I’d say the song draws on Jennifer’s experiences.
And in the “I can’t believe you left it off the list” department, there’s the outstanding “I Saw Your Face In The Moon,” recorded several times by the great Mac Wiseman; search on the title at YouTube and you can see an excellent performance thereof.

No love for Julianne Hough’s “Dreaming Under the Same Moon”? =D

Hah! I loved the blurbs for the Alan Jackson and Dolly songs. Trisha’s is definitely my favorite. And one more that comes to mind is John Anderson’s “Mississippi Moon”.

Mandy Barnett’s cover of the pop classic “Dark Moon” on the soundtrack from “Traveler” is pretty darn good as well. Canadian Tim Tamashiro’s “Under The Berry Moon” is also a fun little ditty.
Moon songs are alright, but my favorite “celestial body” song by far is Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “When Halley Came To Jackson”. A perferct mix of the joyous and poignant sides of life which gives me goosebumps every time I listen. A truly amazing song.

Let’s not forget Conway Twitty’s “I Don’t Know A Thing About Love (The Moon Song)”.

Have to join the chorus of folks looking for that Conway song on this list. I’d also throw in Jack Ingram’s cover of Will Kimbrough’s “Goodnight Moon” from Ingram’s landmark Frank Liddell produced Electric album.

Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town…. Emmylou
That isn’t a song. It’s a line from the song “Easy From Now On” and the title of the album from which that song came.

Goodnight Moon by Jack Ingram. This is probably his most famous song before he hit it big and still a show stopper in concert.

How about Shenandoah’s “The Moon Over Georgia”?

Re: Blue Moon of Kentucky – This is the one and only song Elvis Presley ever got to sing on The Grand Ole Opry stage. Although the Opry establishment didn’t appreciate Elvis’ rockabilly stylings, Bill Monroe was stageside nodding in approval during the performance.
This song has been covered by countless artists but one of my favorite versions is by Tom Petty on the “Good Rockin’ Tonight” SUN Records tribute album. Its always fun to see the reaction from Petty fans when they hear that cut for the first time.

I’ll echo that Conway Twitty’s ‘I Don’t Know A Thing About Love’ is my favorite ‘moon song’.

Neon Moon by Brooks and Dunn is a huge omission. Hard to even do the list without it.

Jim Malec: Really? That’s your opposing rationale? A bunch of those songs are not about the moon, rather using it in some analogy to get across the larger point of the song. Same thing the Brooks and Dunn song does, and it’s a far better song than almost half that list.

My favorite song of all time “Hypnotize the Moon” by Clay Walker
July 7, 2009 at 9:18 pm Permalink
Gotta go with Jim as far as “Neon Moon” is concerned. It’s a great song, whether they’re about it or use it as an image or analogy, the songs in Juli’s list refer to the moon that orbits the earth, while “Neon Moon” doesn’t.

Jeeez,,,,,now we’ve got a Jon-Jim lovefest in the making….
July 8, 2009 at 9:53 pm Permalink
Jon: Jim’s counter-argument was that the Brooks and Dunn song was not about the moon. Buicks to the Moon is not about the moon either. It’s a love song that describes all the things that would happen before he would stop loving her. It’s not literally about the moon. A majority of those songs are not about the moon.

Cornbread Moon from Joe Ely’s “Honky Tonk Masquerade”
Moon Song (written by Patty Griffin) from Emmy Lou Harris’ “All I Intended To Be”

I don’t totally understand the song, but it is sung so beautifully it is mesmerizing- “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” written by Jimmy Webb sung by Linda Ronstadt.

Moon over Georgia by Shenandoah and Talkin to the Moon by the Gatlin Brothers left off this list…I’m losing my confidence in you guys.
July 30, 2009 at 11:47 am Permalink
First “Moon Song” I think of is “I Don’t Know A Thing About Love (The Moon Song)”, by Conway. It’s not even on the list..geez…
August 27, 2009 at 10:15 am Permalink
I also love “Moon Song,” which Emmylou Harris recorded for her most recent album, All I Intended to Be. (My favorite version is still the one by the composer, the great Patty Griffin.)

Omg! How could everyone overlook the best moon song ever? Rosanne cash’s “Blue moon with heartach”. That song is one of the best sad songs of all time. Plus u forgot patty loveless’s “Mr. Man in the moon” from her only what I feel album.

Travis, Patty’s “Mr. Man in the Moon” is a gem, love it. Has a certain torchy, dream-like feel to it.
I agree with the choice of Bill Monroe’s ole standard “Blue Moon of Kentucky” for #1
