Ryan Bingham, T Bone Burnett Win Oscars; Country Fever Canceled; Ashley Monroe Inks New Record Deal
- Congrats to Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett for their win in the original song category at last night’s Oscars for “The Weary Kind,” and to Jeff Bridges for his win in the actor in a leading role category for his depiction of the washed-up country songwriter Bad Blake in Crazy Heart.
- Brad Paisley redefined the term “stage dive” when he took a brutal fall at the end of his concert in Charleston, SC on Saturday night. Coincidentally, the song he had just finished performing was “Alcohol.”
- Early in their career, Brooks & Dunn oiled the way for Paisley’s newfound antics with a fake guitar smoke machine fueled by vegetable oil. Unknown to Kix Brooks, once the smoke was released into the air it turned back into it’s oily state, which predictably, didn’t mix well with the rubber on the stage:
“When I busted my ass, I looked over and Ronnie was on his ass, and the guitar player was on his ass, and Ronnie had that look on his face,” Kix recalled. “You know how ice is when it has water on it? It’s not just ice, and you can’t even shuffle your feet. That’s how slick it was, and I saw [Ronnie] try to get up a couple of times, and he was lookin’ at me like, ‘If I ever catch you I will kill you.’”
- The the Oklahoma country music festival Country Fever has been canceled this year due to the challenging economy.
- Rolling Stone‘s 2010 Spring Music Preview includes snippets on the forthcoming album from Willie Nelson, who muses that he loves making records so much he could make one per day, and two new records from Jamey Johnson:
Country outlaw Jamey Johnson will release two albums in 2010: A “white album,” due first, will focus on upbeat material, including the hard-rocking singalong “California Riots” and the title track, which is sung from the perspective of old guitars hanging on a wall. (A more somber “black album” — featuring songs about money troubles — will follow in the fall.) Johnson says the abundance of material reflects a hot streak he’s been on for the past year or so. “It’s an epic journey through honky-tonk-ville,” he says. “If I record all this material, I fully intend to get it out.”
- @jasoneady: I think top 40 country radio needs more songs about how country the singer is.
- Country Haiku and Jason Eady seem to be on the same page:
How country boys roll:
First, have about 20 beers
Then fire up the truck - Rodney Hayden took to blogging on his website and informed readers that the release date for his new album, titled Tavern Of Poets, will be April 30. Also, if you sign up for his mailing list you’ll receive a free, six-song download.
- Preston Jones on Faith Hill‘s NFL-related concert at Bass Hall over the weekend, where Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach were spotted:
In a way, the raw, loose feel of the band — Hill signaled cues to the ace musicians a couple of times; toward the end, she let loose with a few notes that would make Jennifer Nettles quake in her boots — provided a nice contrast with the high-toned folks watching appreciatively.
- @ashleymonroe: Just sang the truth on stage with Miranda in my hometown.. And just got a text my new record deals done… Could I BE ANY HAPPIER?!?!?!
- North Carolina state senator Charlie Albertson recorded a song criticizing law enforcement officials for issuing citations to members of Willie Nelson‘s band.
- Stephen Holden reviewed a recent Todd Snider concert for The New York Times.
In the stripped-down area where country meets folk, sometimes called Americana, there hasn’t been a phrasemaker as wryly quotable since when — the heyday of Kris Kristofferson and John Prine?
- Billboard has an interview with Alan Jackson along with a preview of “Hard Hat And A Hammer,” one of the songs on his new album Freight Train.
- @johnrich: Anybody know who vandalized my gate? I’ll give ya a grand if you turn em in. Cash.

Could this be a better news day – news about 2 new Jamey Johnson albums and news that Ashley Monroe has a new record deal!!

I got two good laughs out of this column — the B&D story and John Rich’s tweet, so thanks! The suspect list for the “vandalism” is probably bigger than Rich’s ego.

Jamey Johnson music..love it! The vision of Ronny glaring at Kix is priceless. Congrats on Crazy Heart…I’ll catch that movie sometime.

I hope Johnson keeps this release rate up. I’m a little sick of this ridiculous modern practice of only putting an album out every 2-4 years.

Dierks Bentley is supposed to be releasing two albums this year too, one of them bluegrass based.

I wish the “I’m Country” songs would stop and instead we would get songs about how “I’m more pop than you.” That would be better.

Don’t anybody rat me out for what I did to John Rich’s gate!

It will be interesting to see which label Ashley Monroe has inked a deal with. The Vanguard / Sugar Hill folks would be my first choice but any label that lets her be herself is fine by me. Now if she’d just hook up with songwriters like Rory Feek and Wynn Varble (or even Jon Weisberger!) rather than that Brendan Benson dude…
Will Jamey Johnson’s “White Album” feature his version of the Beatles song “Revolution”? Hmm…
Thanks for the Rodney Hayden info. Freebies!!!!!
How will Alan Jackson’s version of the Fred Eaglesmith song “Freight Train” compare to the Kasey Chambers version? I’m not holding my breath to find out. Why didn’t Alan pick “I’m Wilder Than Her” or “Good Enough” instead? Oh well…

I’ve heard Jackson’s version of “Freight Train.” It’s pretty good.

Rick, I’m betting that Ashley Monroe has signed with another major/mid-major. Atlantic or Bigger Picture/WEA makes sense.

@Occasional Hope: “Dierks Bentley is supposed to be releasing two albums this year too, one of them bluegrass based.”
Yup, and the Bluegrass album has a collaboration with Miranda Lambert too, so I’m pretty happy about that!

Ashley signed with Warner. She worked with producer John Shanks on the album. She’s finished recording so now it’s just a matter of time…
