Rosanne Cash & Ryan Bingham Among Americana Awards Winners; Wanda Jackson Announces New Album

Winners at last night’s Americana Honors & Awards show were:
- Album of the Year: The List – Rosanne Cash
- Artist of the Year: Ryan Bingham
- Duo/Group of the Year: The Avett Brothers
- Instrumentalist of the Year: Buddy Miller
- New & Emerging Artist: Hayes Carll
- Song of the Year: “The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart)” – Written by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett-performed by Ryan Bingham

- Hayes Carll on his win:
“I remember the first time I was nominated for new and emerging artist five years ago,” Carll said, pausing for effect. “I was standing in the wings here and I heard my name announced and thought I had won. I started walking out on stage and I realized Mary Gauthier deservedly won that year. I turned around and standing there watching me was Emmylou Harris and John Prine. I felt really silly about the whole thing.”
- Wanda Jackson has a new album scheduled for Jan. 25 of next year. The Party Ain’t Over was produced by Jack White and features several rock musicians and a name a lot of The 9513 readers recognize in Ashley Monroe. (via Nashville Cream)
- The Boot’s Annie Reuter recapped Wednesday’s CMA Songwriter Series at Joe’s Pub with Bob DiPiero, Jamey Johnson, Buddy Cannon, and Kendell Marvel.
- Chet Flippop laments the departure of Gerry House from country radio:
Gerry was jacked over by his parent company Clear Channel last year when CC abruptly sacked two of his longtime show staffers, Al Voecks and Duncan Stewart, apparently without his knowledge. I heard he considered quitting then, but stayed on. I am not surprised he is leaving now. If the most highly-regarded country DJ in the country is not well-respected at all by his parent company, then what’s left in radio? [...] I won’t listen to WSIX again after Gerry’s gone unless they find a solid and credible replacement for him. Not that it’s a big deal for them that I won’t.

- The Bluegrass Blog is holding a “completely unofficial, unaffiliated-with-IBMA Bluegrass Blog Awards poll.” Anybody can vote.
- CMT has the premiere of Zac Brown Band‘s new video for the song “As She’s Walking Away” featuring Alan Jackson.
- Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney and wife Tiffany Fallon welcomed daughter Raquel Blue into the wolrd early Tuesday morning.
- Reba has a new cover for her album All The Women I Am.
- Former Blue Grass Boys member and banjo player Curtis McPeak on the origin of the name bluegrass music:
“I know the gentleman’s name that started the name bluegrass music, and it wasn’t Bill [Monroe]. … I don’t want to start a controversy,” McPeak says. “It happened in the ’60s, when it was branded bluegrass music.”
- As part of the buildup for their farewell tour, The Last Encore , Naomi and Wynonna Judd will appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show next Tuesday, which is kicking off its own farewell season.
- The Randy Rogers Band video for “Interstate” is the iTunes free video of the week. (iTunes)
- When it’s Charlie Louvin‘s time to go, he’d like show business to be the last thing he did:
Louvin remembers two performers who died “while doing their thing” in his lifetime: Onie Wheeler, who died on the Grand Ole Opry stage, and Grandpa Jones, who suffered a fatal stroke just after coming off the Opry stage.
“Some idiot stopped him in the hall, wanting an autograph,” Louvin said of Jones. “‘It looks like I’ve hit a snag,’ were the last words he said, trying to be funny. I’m not that tough, but I can work at it.”
- James Otto‘s new album Shake What God Gave Ya can be streamed on Rhapsody before its release next Tuesday. (via Country Music Is Love)
- Saving Country Music posted screening dates for The Last Rites of Ransom Pride, a gory western co-written by Ray Wylie Hubbard and starring Dwight Yoakam and Kris Kristofferson.
- NPR posted three videos from a Folk Alley Session with Sam Bush for the songs: “Circles Around Me,” “The Ballad of Stringbean & Estelle,” and “Eight More Miles to Louisville.” Full audio from the Session can be streamed too, which includes the already mentioned performances along with an lengthy interview that concludes with an interesting synopsis of the Stringbean story and the inspiration for the final line of “The Ballad of Stringbean & Estelle.”

There are a lot of great country artists who have wound up in the Americana realm by default these days, but they sure don’t seem to win many AMA awards. They tend to honor more of the roots rock based stuff I don’t much care for. Hayes Carll was a nice exception though, and Rosanne’s tribute album really shouldn’t have counted. Oh well…
That new Wanda Jackson covers album sounds interesting, but alas the Jack White Factor is present so red flags are waving. I do want to hear the song that includes Ashley Monroe though. “Rum And Coca Cola” was a WWII wartime hit for The Andrews Sisters who were singing about working for the Yankee dollar down in Trinidad mon.
I’ll be sure to listen to Sam Bush on the NPR program but I doubt his take on “Eight More Miles To Louisville” will be in the same league as Grandpa Jones’ version.
