Rodney Atkins and Kellie Pickler Added to CMA Awards Show
- Rodney Atkins and Kellie Pickler have been added to the CMA Awards shows as performers and Reese Witherspoon will present an award.
- Aside from praise for the title track on Toby Keith’s latest album, Chris Richards’ review of That Don’t Make Me a Bad Guy reads like one long burn after another. He describes it as “a ballad-heavy disappointment that finds the self-proclaimed ‘Big Dog Daddy’ doing the unthinkable: downsizing.”
- Roots music blog Hickory Wind is celebrating its sixth birthday.
Right now I’m listening to a lot of new bands that embody the next wave of Roots Music. They don’t have much steel guitar (unfortunately), but they have lots of fiddles, banjos, acoustic guitars, mandolins, and songs, melodies, and lyrical themes that stretch back to the Golden Age of Country way back to the Ancient Tones of the British Isles. They feel like today, and they remind us of yesterday. They’re carrying the torch forward, and I’ll be writing about them for the next several weeks… we’ll be writing about them for the next several years.
- Unlike country music, Barry Mazor says bluegrass has been getting back to the basics this year, decidedly favoring new acts that emphasize the more traditional end of its modern-but-rooted sound spectrum. He goes on to conveniently list several of the artists who follow that trend and were honored by the International Bluegrass Music Awards.
- At least one of those acts, Dailey & Vincent, is scheduled to appear at the 2009 Merlefest. Emmylou Harris, Del McCoury Band and Doc Watson also hold spots on the newly released lineup.
- Doctors have cleared Jason Boland to get back on the road after having surgery to remove a polyp from his throat on August 26, the same day his new album was released. He has several dates lined up for late November and December.
- That Nashville Sound called my attention toward a new book titled Johnny Cash and the Paradox of American Identity and scheduled to be released May 2009. In the book, author Leigh H. Edwards explores the allure of Cash’s paradoxical image and its cultural significance.
“She argues that Cash embodies irresolvable contradictions of American identity that reflect foundational issues in the American experience, such as the tensions between freedom and patriotism, individual rights and nationalism, the sacred and the profane. She illustrates how this model of ambivalence is a vital paradigm for American popular music, and for American identity in general.”
- Joe Dee Messina revealed that she’s pregnant with a baby boy.
- Alison Bonaguro uncovered an interview in which Toby Keith admits to having a crush on Seinfeld’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
- Should the “white space” freed up by TV broadcasters after they make their move to digital next February be used to expand wireless internet? Bill Gates and Google CEO Eric Schmidt think so, but Dolly Parton and the Dixie Chicks are among artists who feel that all those wireless signals will interfere with the wireless microphones and other technology essential to the music industry. Is Dave Haywood going solo? This and many other of country music's most pressing questions answered in the September edition of The 9513's world famous Mailbag!
Caroline Herring likes to sing songs about life in the South. No, not exactly like Justin Moore and Jason Aldean...
The 9513's resident historian Paul W. Dennis sits down for a chat with country music legend Gene Watson.
As much as we love girl singers, we love songs about girl singers even more. Here's just a few of the many tribute songs out there.
Step away from the river and up to a jukebox, because heartbreak is only temporary, but a good song about drowning yourself—like a diamond—lasts forever.
What do you think about music labels "testing the waters" with a single before providing access to an artist's entire album?
What country artist, young or old, would you recommend as a must-listen artist to a newcomer on his/her journey through country music, and what would your essential song picks be?

Just what we need, Dixie Chicks making technical decisions for us.
October 29, 2008 at 2:16 pm Permalink
Dixie Chicks need to just shut their mouth and leave the country.
October 29, 2008 at 2:25 pm Permalink
So because you disagree with the Dixie Chicks’ politics, they don’t know anything about using wireless microphones.
Really?
October 29, 2008 at 2:29 pm Permalink
Hey Drew – newsflash….the whole Let’s Bash The Chicks train has left the station. Let’s move on, shall we? it’s almost 2009, 6 years after the fact
October 29, 2008 at 2:46 pm Permalink
Wait, Drew, isnt this country that you so clearly love a free one? i would think a good, red-blooded patriot like you would be ok with them being able to actually speak? i know, they must be commies to actually want to express themselves at any point over the last few years…go hug your rush limbaugh pain-pill dispenser.

Drew, since we are talking “current events”,any thoughts on Iran-Contra, or Conway Twitty’s perm?
October 29, 2008 at 2:55 pm Permalink
since we’re talking about current events, i’d just like to say that jocelyn elders sure is a controversial figure. i wonder if she’ll get through the nominating process.
October 29, 2008 at 3:01 pm Permalink
well, she might get through, but i wouldnt bet on that Clarence Thomas guy…can you believe what they said about the coke???? man, times sure are crazy in this day and age.

Where’s the beef?
October 29, 2008 at 3:11 pm Permalink
I agree with Chris, just because you don’t agree with the Dixie Chicks political views you think they are stupid. If I recall correctly they were harsh on president Bush when many thought he was still doing good. I don’t think he has exactly done a great job so maybe we should listen to them. The only part of what they did that I thought was bad was saying bad things about our president while overseas. But either way Obama/Biden 08 :)

You all know you wish you were a maverick
October 29, 2008 at 3:34 pm Permalink
You know who’s a real maverick? Dale Watson.
October 29, 2008 at 3:38 pm Permalink
Wow! It’s usually rather obvious when political discussions/jabs will break out, but this time caught me off guard for sure.
October 29, 2008 at 3:46 pm Permalink
yeah chris, watson is indeed a maverick, but if i’m not mistaken, he isnt a fan of the new groups in country music like Alabama, and Highway 101, cuz they are so new and poppy….

Taylor Swift is a maverick
October 29, 2008 at 4:01 pm Permalink
True, but I’ve been hearing about a new guy named Dwight Yoakam that he might like.
October 29, 2008 at 4:05 pm Permalink
i agree, and if he likes Yoakum, he should really love James House!!

I disagree with the Washington Post review of Toby Keith’s new album. I think the balladry really shines. I was pleasantly surprised when I bought the album today.
Clearly, this reviewer is not familiar with Toby Keith as an album artist, but rather, a singles artist.
And I inclined to trust the judgement of mega-touring acts like Dolly Parton and The Dixie Chicks about interference with wireless microphones. Who would know better than the people who use the technology?
October 29, 2008 at 4:52 pm Permalink
Chris.
You asked where’s the beef?
There isnt any.
October 29, 2008 at 4:52 pm Permalink
that rascal clarence thomas (long dong silver). i just don’t know how that’s gonna turn out. next thing you know, milli vanilli will have to give back their grammy. the world has just gone crazy, i say.
October 29, 2008 at 5:09 pm Permalink
Chris, actually I agree with their politics, and disagree with them being a technical resource, or a false mouthpiece for someone they know that is. :)
October 29, 2008 at 5:14 pm Permalink
I’d kill for a good steak.
October 29, 2008 at 5:15 pm Permalink
Ah. So which one is Dolly — technical resource or false mouthpiece?

And now for something completely different!
Nashville resident and singer/songwriter Sue Fabisch, who came out with a great parody song “Brand New Husband” in 2007, has a new musical debuting in mid-November. Sue’s claim to fame is writing “Music For Mommies” songs that target the real life soccer mom population. Here’s Sue’s press release about the musical for any of you Mom types here at the 9513! (I think we have some here, don’t we? Hmmmm….)

Rick’s comment: I purchased a copy of “Brand New Husband” from Sue’s website and she is a great gal to deal with. We need someone from The 9513 to attend and write a review! Is Jim Malec available? (lol)

All politics aside (Obama/Biden 08!) I think they do not even use the white space anymore for the wireless microphones as many of the new systems are being set up via bluetooth which uses a completely different set up.
October 30, 2008 at 9:30 am Permalink
I did not realize advertising was free here.
October 30, 2008 at 1:27 pm Permalink
If it makes you all feel better, the following country artists also signed on to the letter about “white space”:
Brooks & Dunn
Miranda Lambert
Billy Ray Cyrus
Pat Green
Rissi Palmer
Julianne Hough
Jason Aldean, etc.
The list includes over a 100 big names artists from all genres.
Re: Jason Boland. What do I have to do to get some of those Texas acts out to California?! Darn.

Rick posts are becoming the spam of the 9513. Maybe cut back a bit?

Those types of posts are better suited for the forum. While news threads do sort of serve an “open thread” function, it would be better to post something like what Rick posted above in the forum, and then link to it from a comment.
