Robin English – “Cotton Field Girl”

Robin EnglishI’ve remained completely oblivious to Robin English up until this point in time, most likely because she was signed to what she calls the “Sony witness protection plan.” Lucky for her, and us, she got out of that deal and went indie. Her latest single, “Cotton Field Girl,” recently hit the bottom of the Texas Music Chart at No. 27 and will hopefully continue to make an upward climb.

“Cotton Field Woman” is a biographical song about English’s grandmother who grew up picking cotton during the dust bowl. With a premise like that it’d be easy to get nostalgic, but English throws the nostalgia aside for an all out celebration of a strong-willed woman that believed you could build your dreams if you “keep on pickin’ ’till your fingers bleed,” a double entendre for cotton or a guitar. Throw in the killer harmonica (When is a harmonica not a good idea?) and it makes an already top-notch song more attractive.

Thumbs Up
