Rich’s Manager Wants Lawsuit Dropped; Opry Experiments With Captioning
- WSMV Nashville obtained audio tapes of a conversation John Rich’s manager, Marc Oswald, had with Jared Ashley in which Oswald tried to get Ashley to drop his lawsuit against Rich.
The audio recordings are supposedly a conversation between Oswald and Ashley on May 22. The recordings are edited. Ashley never speaks.
“One thing about the music business, country music business in particular, is, you know, as long as you’re not a child rapist or gay, you can get away with a lot … You know what I mean?” said Oswald on the tape.
“I would say, dude, if this guy is ready to back off and ready to write a check for aggravation and by doing so, it’s over and you can feel like you accomplished a lot, I would do it,” Oswald said. “If I can agree with you on the number and he drops his and you drop yours and you call the detective, we could be done with this today.”
- The Grand Ole Opry is experimenting with captioning for the hearing impaired.
- Craig Bickhardt posted video of “Father’s Day” to his blog, Ninety Mile Wind. It’s a song he wrote with Jack Sundrud and Helen Darling and is obviously appropriate to yesterday’s celebration of fathers.

- In a special to DFW.com, Punch Shaw said two songs defined the Cherryholmes‘ set at Concerts in the Garden on Friday night: “Sumatra” and “Mary.”
- Charlie Robison directs a few jabs at his ex-wife on his new album, Beautiful Day, but in an interview with Sarah Rodman he said he “wanted to keep all the overt vindictiveness out of it.”
“Emily and I are still very close. She comes over to the house for dinner three times a week with [our three] kids, and we still go out and have dinner with our friends. I didn’t want my kids for the next 20 years of their life at their therapists’ office saying, ‘Daddy keeps calling Mommy a bitch on his records.’ That would get kind of old after a while.”

- Jon Caramanica reviewed the Toby Keith and Trace Adkins concert at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J. on Thursday night for The New York Times.

And Zach Effron is playing Kevin Bacon’s character.
Why are they doing this to Footloose? Okay, it was a bad movie, but it doesn’t deserve to be punished like this.

Matt B – As dumb of a thing to say as it was and as sad as the reality is, it’s not exactly front page news that Nashville, or much of the country music-buying public for that matter would be slow to accept a homosexual star. That would have to be worse than bashing a republican president on foreign soil, right :-)

You’re right and it’s mostly true in the pop/rock world too. Still, it really shouldn’t matter one way or another if the music is great. There are many gay/lesbian people working ‘behind the scenes’ in Nashville so I hardly think it’s the industry persae but rather what the Industry (execs, radio stations) perceives folks (listeners/fans) would think if their favorite star were gay or lesbian.

MattB. as a gay fan of country music I think the reason that a gay singer wouldn’t make it now has to do with sex appeal. Male and female singers have to attract fans that not only hear them but see them and want them. Sex has been a tipping point in music for a long while. But once you add a music video, 24/7 news and a shorter period of time to become a fan favorite- you knock gay right off the map and people of color to a large extent too. Look at how Chesney and Randy Travis attacked when they were called gay. Look at what happened to the third member of Sugarland. I still believe that Terri Clark might have had greater sales had she not been a handsome woman. Oswald and his type are so afraid of not being liked or or famous thay don’t have the courage to be real or true. That is why John Rich’s songs fall flat. In the end he is just taking a position to be famous. And in the end many gay singer/songwriter might find that it is better to be in the closet than out- many have already discovered that fact.

I bought a digital copy of the Todd Snider live album and I’m enjoying it thoroughly.
Thanks for the link to the giveaway too – an album as great as My Turn deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.
Re: the gay/lesbian issue. I have to agree with Matt B. on all the points he made too and add that I don’t think we’ll see acceptance for gays so widespread that ‘the silent majority’ will be tolerant enough to accept a gay country star; not in my lifetime. I think we’re still generations away from that. And I also think being openly gay would be a lot worse for a career (in mainstream country music) than bashing the President.

I think Julianne and Chuck should be cast as the leads in a remake of “Grease”! At least that would be worth watching….well, maybe anyway.
Interesting comment about the Cherryholmes concert:
“Unfortunately, there was not much of a crowd to enjoy the show. The audience of 902 was the smallest this summer in this series presented by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. But if the band members were bothered, they never showed it. They knew that they were making fine music for the fans who did turn out. For Cherryholmes, everything is obviously relative.”
See, the problem is that Bluegrass music was not developed in Texas nor by Texans, so they just don’t give a damn down there! (lol) Next time the Cherryholmes just need to add a couple of Bob Wills’ songs to their set when they head to the Lone Star State. As for being disappointed, as long as Jere gets paid their minimum booking fee he doesn’t care if anyone shows up! (lol)

Rick’s Random Tidbits: For all you “Old School” (or in my case just “Old”) fans of retail CD’s, this week Best Buy is featuring both the new Holly Williams’ album “Here With Me” and Ryan Bingham’s new release for an introductory price of $8. Even though I have an advance copy of Holly’s CD I plan on buying the retail version as I don’t mind paying for music that’s worth something to me. Well that and the picture of Holly on the front….

I don’t think we’ll see acceptance for gays so widespread that ‘the silent majority’ will be tolerant enough to accept a gay country star; not in my lifetime. I think we’re still generations away from that.
I actually don’t think audiences would have a huge problem with it, as long as the artist wasn’t too flamboyant about it. I don’t think we’re ready for a country version of Boy George yet, but I don’t think people would really care what someone does in their private life. I think the bigger problem would be for the suits in Nashville to figure out how to market a gay star.

I think the bigger problem would be for the suits in Nashville to figure out how to market a gay star.
Many would argue they don’t know how to market any stars these days at least labels not called Capitol and Big Machine.
