Randy Rogers Band Live At Cowboys Dancehall In San Antonio

Randy Rogers appears to be right at home on stage. His eyes remained closed during the slow songs, off in his own world, an onlooker might think that nothing existed but Rogers, the mic, and his band. His mouth turns up in a slight grin at the closing of each piece as if he were pleased with his handiwork.
Rogers’ band is rowdy and full of energy, seemingly the opposite of Randy Rogers himself. You get a sense of his rowdiness as he playfully bites three holes in a tortilla, places it to his face like a mask and sticks his tongue through the bottom holes while he peers between the top two. Afterwards he sends the tortilla sailing across the room, just above the reach of the crowd. His fiddle player becomes the main focus during each solo as he wavers back and forth like a mongoose hypnotizing it’s prey.
The band took the stage around 11:30 and played every song from their latest album, Just a Matter of Time, along with numerous others from past albums, all the way up until a quarter past one. The perfect mix of slow and fast songs were played to keep the crowd from losing interest. Between songs Randy would take sips of his ice cold Bud Light as he toasted to beautiful San Antonio. He was well versed on his current events, almost randomly announcing headlines from the past couple of days. The fans reacted wildly anytime the Longhorns were mentioned. Most fans threw their horns in the air while a few could be seen turning their horns down as a sign of disrespect for the football team who had won their bowl game earlier in the day, a few miles from where the concert was taking place.
Overall, the Randy Rogers Band put on one of the better shows I have seen live. Each song almost sounded better than the recorded version from their album. I’d highly recommend seeing them live if you get the chance, but you might want to stay away from the stage, as I could barely hear anything that was said for hours after the concert was over.
