Radney Foster Celebrates 50th; Songs On Songwriting; Free Mark Wills
- Austin Music Source’s Brian T. Atkinson published a brief Q&A with Radney Foster, who celebrates his 50th birthday with a star-studded lineup at Hill’s Cafe tonight.
Darius Rucker told us recently that he’s thought of recording your entire ‘Del Rio, Texas, 1959’ album.
Well, that’s incredibly flattering (laughs). I’ve known for a long time that he’s a really big fan. My sister called me one night when (Hootie and the Blowfish) were doing some VH1 thing. I see this rock band with a black lead singer with a voice as wide as a freight train wearing a Radney Foster ‘Del Rio, Texas 1959’ T-shirt. I couldn’t tell by the music if they liked me or if the T-shirt was free, but I dig it (laughs).
- The Gobblers Knob’s Kelly Dearmore recently caught a set from Austin Cunningham and said two songs in particular, political songs no less, piqued his interest: “Guns & Religion” and “Whose Gonna Bail Out the Workin’ Man.” Listen on MySpace.
- My Kind of Country’s Occasional Hope gave several examples of songs about songwriting and asks for your favorites.
- Download Mark Wills‘ lates single, “Entertaining Angels,” for free. (via Country Standard Time)
- Daryle Singletary and Holly Williams earned three-and-a-half stars each from Chris Neal for their recent albums, Rockin’ in the Country and Here With Me.
- Ninebullets.net on Those Darlins: “There’s just something freakishly infectious about these girls and their songs. They’re having a blast and that simple fact comes through the speakers in spades and you can’t help but to tap your feet and sing along.”
- Country California: Martina McBride Won’t Stop Cracking Dead Baby Jokes
- Yesterday marked the anniversary of Billy the Kid’s death and in referencing that occasion, Lonesome Music shared several Billy — not necessarily Billy the Kid related — tunes. Here are a couple of bonus songs: Marty Robbins‘ “Billy the Kid” and Joe Ely’s “Me and Billy the Kid.”
- Craig Shelburne likens the new Bryan Sutton album, Almost Live, to musicians at a house party picking with their friends.
- euVue posted the first three parts of a five part audio interview with Suzy Bogguss, Gretchen Peters and Matraca Berg from the British leg of their ‘Wine Women and Song’ tour. I haven’t made it through the whole thing yet, but the host plays a gorgeous version of “Farther Along,” which coincidentally, is also on the tour’s MySpace page.

I think Darius Rucker should release a cover version of “Louisiana Blue” as his next radio single…
Austin Cunningham’s response to the Obamatron’s comments about backwoods Pennsylvania voters is similar to how I felt the first time I heard it. Its rare Obama lets his true condescending elitist persona out in public as it is so distasteful. On the other hand the answer to “Who’s Going To Bail Out The Working Man” is obviously Big Brother Obama! Well, if you happen to belong to a labor union that is….
Holly Williams’ “Here With Me” album contains a mix of both very fine and average songs, and its too bad the average stuff drags down what could have been a great album. Oh well….
Craig Shelburne has an eclectic taste in music I find similar to Juli Thanki, but without the deep rooted innate ability to recognize high quality material that might actually appeal to a wide audience.

It more one of those “if we all think about Mark Willis at the same time maybe we can move him with our minds” things. Next Monday at 10:07 AM–that’s the time we make our first attempt. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just lure him into the closet with a Brandy cd.
