We recently did an interview with him as well and WOW what a cool guy! We're totally pulling for him in the country arena and think he's fantastic. I do, however, love the H&B days.

I'm proud to say that I gathered up my courage and brought up the burger commercial when I interviewed him a couple of years ago. The formatting is screwed up on that page of the Nashville Scene site, so I'll excerpt:

Scene: So what was the deal with the Burger King commercial?

Rucker: They came to me with it and I said no. I didn't want to do it. Then after hearing [director] Dave LaChapelle's vision and knowing how over-the-top it was going to be, I said, "Hell yeah, that's gonna be fun!" It was so unlike anything I'd ever done. It was a shocker to see me in that. I was shocked the first time I saw it. I got, like, 25 friends over to watch the Daytona 500. We're sitting there, getting all excited for the race, and the first commercial, I see my face. Everybody in the room is like, 'Oh, shit!' I'll put it this way: no regrets, but I wouldn't do it again.

I'd rather listen to his music than most of what's on country radio today, but it's still pretty pop to me.

Switch that hat out though! Either get a real one like a Steson or Resistol or don't wear one.

Yeah, I meant to say "traditional" rather than "country".

I wasn't particularly looking forward to Rucker's new album, but his comments about country being "poppier" and aiming for something a little more traditional have me intrigued. Although, we know how well artists deliver on what they say. I'd hardly call "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" traditional, so we'll see how well he delivers.

Good piece, Jim. It made me like the dude a little more.

He seems really cool, Rascal Flatts song aside (and I'm not a huge fan of "Me & God" either, but eh). Great interview.

Can't believe you asked that first question (but I'm glad you did). You should have addressed him as "Hootie" too; I hear he loves that. :) I'm looking forward to this album. Nice interview!

I've had a soft spot in my heart for Hootie when they covered a Foster & Lloyd song on the B-side of a single. Unlike certain other pop people entering country music, I can completely believe that Darius is doing this because he wants to and is not just strictly in a cash/fame grab situation. I hope it works out for him.

At least he chose "Take Me There" instead of "Bob That Head" or "Every Day". I don't care much for RF, but that is one song I don't mind listening to.

I love "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" and hope his album match the quality of that song, regardless of how "country" it is. I do agree, though, the song isn't as country as he is making it sound.

Nice interview and look forward to the album.
