Q&A: Eleven Hundred Springs Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Ben Cisneros | April 18th, 2008 Email Share

On Sunday, April 13th I was lucky enough to see one of my favorite bands, Eleven Hundred Springs, play at Safari Sam’s in Hollywod, Calfornia. Eleven Hundred Springs has a brand new album, Country Jam, being released on May 6th, and they were kind enough to take a little time out of their busy schedule to give the readers of The 9513 a little insight into the new album, their views on balancing tradition with innovation, and new ways that they plan to connect with their fans.

Ben: When you guys were going into the studio did you have any specific goals or want to do anything different?

Eleven Hundred Springs Matt Hillyer (lead singer/songwriter/guitar player): I’d say that we just wanted to keep it simple and make a good country record, that’s about it. Play in tune, play in time, and put the best songs that we have forward. I think that that’s probably the most that most people can hope for going into the studio. We’re not trying to re-invent the wheel, we’re just trying to make good music, know what I mean?

Ben: Can fans expect anything different musically from the release?

MH: It’s a little more rockabilly, there are some more rockabilly influences in there, and it’s more traditional I’d say. There are a couple of good shuffles, there’s a nice Jackie Brenston cover, “Rocket 88,” there’s some good old George Jones and a whole lot of Eleven Hundred Springs.

Ben: With the song “Long-Haired, Tattooed, Hippie Freaks” you guys establish a new paradigm for the traditional country music fan, how do you think you’ve done at bringing traditional country music to a new generation of fans?

MH: You know what, I’ll say this much, there’s a lot of lip service that’s given by a lot of people to keeping the Willie and Waylon era thing alive, and if you were to ask my opinion I don’t think that a lot of people back it up very much. I don’t know if we’re actually setting out to carry any kind of torch, but just do what speaks to us and play the kind of music that makes sense to us. And that doesn’t just cover that era of country music, a lot of stuff like Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell, that old stuff, really speaks to us too. We just try to cover a large span of the influences that we have, whether it’s Doug Sahm or Hank Williams or whatever, and hope that it comes out the way that we sound.

Eleven Hundred Springs Steve Berg (Bass Player): I’d add this to whatever Matt’s saying, a lot of time on interviews and what not you get to talk about your influences and all that, and not to be misunderstood, we’re talking about these influences, but you know we’re not the house band all night that just does covers and stuff like that. We’re stressing, and trying to explain, what all these influences are, but as far as the kids being into the sound that we’ve got, our original sound that we do on our records and all of our original material, it seems like especially in the last year, the kids have really come around. The kids who maybe a year or two ago were listening to more the rock and stuff that wasn’t exactly us, ya’know especially with the internet and the MySpace and all that, we’re getting the 18-25 crowd, Ya know, wanting to be our friends and all that, and when you look at their other friends it’s bands that we like or bands that were our influences back in the day. So it’s refreshing to see the kids getting it and liking what we do and liking some of the same stuff that we like. It puts us in a good spot and it makes us feel good about playing this music

MH: Yeah, and it’s cool a lot of the younger folks that he’s talking about are responding to something that’s been around for so long and something that we’ve sort of grew up listening to and cultivating and trying to learn how to do it right and all that stuff, but for a lot of those folks its something new, ya know

SB: yeah we invented this! (laugh)

MH: (smiles) no, no, but we do it our own way, we’re definitely not trying to run any kind novelty act or anything like that, we don’t set out just to do things just old school

SB: Yeah it’s no retro show, but if you know what’s up you can’t deny, you see the influence pretty clearly. It is what it is

Ben: The center of the country music industry is in Nashville. What is your guys’ current relationship with Nashville, do you have any ties to the city, and do you foresee that relationship changing in any way?

SB: Man, we do business with all kinds of folks, I like doing business with people out here in California, the fans out in California really get it, but as far as doing business, we do business with folks in LA, New York, we’re currently doing some business with people in Tennessee. Ya know, business is business, but I like taking the music to the folks who like it and that’s all over the world. Especially this last trip out here in California, the kids, the people, adults alike, they really love the tunes, so let’s do the business on the computer and wherever the people on the other end are, if their in Tennessee or whatever, it don’t matter.

Eleven Hundred Springs Ben: Is there anything else that you want the readers of The 9513 to know that’s new or on the horizon for Eleven Hundred Springs?

SB: Man, just that release date, May 6th.

Casey Mack (Manager/Road Manager): The big thing is something with our new website. Stuff that really I’ve noticed is Matt’s songwriting chops, and especially in Texas it’s all about the song, so we’re going to have all of Matt’s lyrics on the website in an online songbook for people to look at and read. It’s going to be so good for people to get into and read his poetry because, man, it’s beautiful.

MH: I’d say, more of onward and upwards, we’re going to continue to play shows, we’re going to continue to make club dates and continue to record music.

SB: You know what else, we’re going to also back it up, ya know everybody looks at YouTube and everything and we got some film people we’re working with and probably in the next month we’d like to have more online content and video so people can see as well as listen to it, so I’m looking forward to seeing that.

MH: Steve and I are also in talks with some people to do an internet radio show with the two of us, so that should be up and rocking when we get back to Dallas.

SB: Yeah, very soon, they’re setting the Dallas studios up and we’ll be able to go live with our internet radio show and we’ll be playing stuff that we’d like to hear and playing it for folks and maybe they’d like to hear it too.

CM: Ya know, with our tour schedule we’ve really been trying to figure out what runs work for us and with this California run we’ve had tremendous success and we’re going to be coming out here every ninety days and just doing it right and hard touring and spreading the music here and trying to get people interested in us, and in Texas music and showing them what it’s all about.

Ben: Cool deal guys, thank you so much!.

So there you have it folks. I’m happy to report that the guys put on an incredible show at Safari Sam’s and I’d wholeheartedly recommend checking out a live performance of theirs if you get the chance. Remember, their new album Country Jam is in stores on May 6th, and if their previous work and their live show is any indication, it’s going to be a great album.

Eleven Hundred Springs rocks, in a country sort of way. Any hype they get is well deserved as far as I’m concerned.

Did they play any of the new material at Safari Sam’s, and what was the turnout like?

    The turnout wasn’t overwhelming.

They played a weekly show called Safari Sam’s Americana Brunch, which is hosted by a swell guy named Hillbilly DJ Jeff.

They were playing with two of the top local honky tonk guys, Dave Gleason and Mike Stinson, and it made for one hell of a show.

They did play a few songs from the new record and it all sounded great. Matt has an amazing voice and some of the new songs really highlite that.

Hopefully next time they come to town, some of the LA folks who’re reading this will make it a point to come out to the show!

  3. These guys are Texas’ BEST answer to Nashville folks like Alan Jackson, Josh Turner, and Brad Paisley. I saw them rock the house at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield last week to a standing ovation.

Get their new album online at http://www.lonestarmusic.com/album.asp?aid=4545 and you will not be disappointed!

The masses can have Nashville and all the glorified horse crap that comes out of it. These guys are the real deal, making real roots music. Please add more dates in Southern California.

My wife and I have followed this band now for a few years and one of the best things I like about them, other then the great music, is that they are real. These guys are exactly who they seem to be and I think that goes a long way. Never miss them when they come through town. Maybe one day Steve will get back on the hog and we can go ride.

Love the music, don’t stop what your doing, and can’t wait to get the new album!!

ELEVEN HUNDRED SPRINGS IS REAL COUNTRY MUSIC AND THE BEST BAND OUT THERE RIGHT NOW, AND HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS

I am so thankful that Safari Sams actually features these types of artists on occasion! This club has emerged as the spiritual successor to the long gone and lamented Palomino Club on those nights they feature great country artists like Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, The Hot Club of Cowtown, and now Eleven Hundred Springs. The place is a dive and parking can be a real pain, but the sound system is excellent and people can dance there.

I’ll have to keep an eye out and try to catch The Springs the next time they swing through town….

I tell all my friends all the time that 1.1K Springs is the greatest band in the world. I sometimes start to doubt it if I’ve gone a week or two without seeing a show though. I start to doubt myself. I think, “Maybe they aren’t the greatest band in the world, maybe Brooks and Dunn or Kenny Chesney is better.” I then go to a live show and hear Matt the Cat rock out and Jordan burn up the stage and remember why they are the best in the land. LONG LIVE ELVEN HONDO!!!

My wife and I see these guys every time we can and we have never seen them do the same show (or even close) twice. They are absolutely the hardest working performers we have ever seen. One night in Fort Worth they came on in this tiny little club at 9:00 and rocked us until 1:30 or 2:00 without taking a deep breath. The talent level is unbelievable. Do you wanna rock, roll, laugh, two step, reminisce, clap your hands and stomp your feet? We are torn between wanting them to really make it big or keeping them a secret so we can catch them up close and often. Bottom line is they are going to be huge and there are no nicer guys around who deserve it more.

Eleven Hundred Springs is my favorite country band. I saw them at the Golden Light Cantina in Amarillo, Texas last night, Thursday,4-17-08. They were incredible! I saw them last year at the Golden Light on 4-25-07, also a Thursday. Both times they packed the house. Matt Hillyer’s songwriting talent is comparable to Hank Williams or Jim Morrison. Go see them and buy their records. I am a 53 year old Grandpa, my wife digs them and so does my 30 year old son. Even my 3 year old grandson loves them.

The Spring Shiner Sunday season at Love & war in Plano doesnt even start for me until 1100 plays (maybe chris knight too). They are a part of Dallas music history and I am really proud that they have built a base of fans across the country.

Eleven Hundred Springs is Phenominal. They bring to life what real musicianship is. They are all extremely talented at what they do and it shows with every note they play. If you listen to Jordan with that fiddle you know he has studied the best of the best fiddle players from the time and places where it all started. Matt has this crystal clear voice that lets you really hear every word of thier songs. They blend together some of the greatest musical styles ever created and then add their very own. They make you wanna dance and sing along. If you like real music that speaks to your soul and moves you in ways words can’t describe, 1100 Springs is Definitely a band you need listen to and go see. It will be an experience you will not forget any time soon!

I have been following them since the beginning & even before 1100 was formed. It all started for me was when Matt was “Matt the Cat” standing on the corner singing his little heart out, down in Deep Ellum in Dallas. They are the real deal! My only concern is that they WILL get big & I will not be able to see them in small bars & get to get hug from Matt & Steve but see them thru binoculars from some huge stadium seat.

I’m not surprised that 1100 made lots of new fans on this road tour. They are a breath of fresh air in this monotonous industry. Texans are proud of this LoneStar band! As much as my husband and I like seeing them play in local bars, they have been kept a secret long enough. They are the next REAL Texas Country Stars!

Nobody Loves 1100’s music more than me. The New Music (Country Jam) is simply the best PURE Country record in quite some time. But, don’t believe me, go to their myspace.com page or web site (www.elevenhundredsprings.com) and listen for yourself. It’s free to sample. Then do yourself a favor and support these guys, buy their CD.

I’ve seen EHS live many times and I am never disappointed. They always put on a great show. I’ve listened to their albums over and over, and the music never gets old. :)

  25. You can add “Best Live Act”, “Best Collaboration with the Tejas Brothers”, and “Best DJ” to Eleven Hundred Springs list of accomplishments.

As voted by fans & media in Dallas/Fort Worth and the Big Winners at last nights’ Dallas Morning News / QuickDFW 1st Annual “Big Thing” Awards show….

Who needs Nashville, DFW has the biggest Country Music demographic in the nation….

Eleven Hundred Springs put on a scorching show at the Continental Club last night.

They played some of their old stuff (”Northside Blues,” “The Only Thing She Left Was the Blues,” “Long Haired Tattooed Hippe Freaks,” “Thunderbird Will Do Just Fine”) a few covers (Mickey Newbury’s “Why You Been Gone So Long,” Johnny Cash’s “Rock Island Line,” Don Williams’ “I Believe In You”), and some of their new material (”Texas Afternoon,” “Every Time I Get Close To You,” “You Can’t Hide From Your Heart”), which sounded great.

Towards the end Matt called up a musician (his name escapes me now) to take over on his yellow-rose laden guitar and Doug Moreland to play a few licks on the fiddle. It was a honky-tonkin’ euphoric good time.
