The only artist who actually looked at what I had written down was Jeff Bates (actually reading one of the questions and then answering it) but really, in general, I just have a list of topics like Chris. I was just saying I felt like it was easier to talk in person although a recent phoner I had was pretty damn good.

my remark was supposed to be light-hearted too. being aware that some country stars drive into town for a drink on a mini john deere, a great female country singer used to go to the men’s room in her previous life, the thought of one doing an interview all by himself would have left me quite amused, but not at all surprised.

I am with Chris. In my recent and limited experience with live interviews (top secret, cant talk about it…much), I have caught each of the artists (10 or so) attmepting to make undetected, casual-seeming glimpses onto my list of questions. I have found that to be very interesting, as i think its a small glimpse into the artists general mistrust of the media, whether its warranted or not.

Thanks. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, so I planned on asking why coffee is called a cup of joe, but it didn’t seem appropriate at the time.

Yeah, in persons are often awkward. I prefer those if I can talk to an artist in his or her natural environment. Not to make musicians sound like woodland creatures or anything…

Oh, I dunno — I’d say it can work both ways. Sometimes an in-person interview adds a layer of formality that you don’t want (especially because the subject can see your note pad, tape recorder and whatnot). It depends.

You’re right. Doing interviews can be tough, especially if you’re talking to them on the phone. It’s alot easier to do an interview in person where the artists typically are able to open up more. At least that’s been my experience.
