Pat Green KO-ed By Flying Beer Can
- Pat Green may think twice before asking for another beer from stage:
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports that late in his show, he shouted, “Anyone got a beer?”
A can of suds suddenly soared from the audience onto the stage. Then a second can from the crowd hit Green between the eyes, knocking him out.
UPDATE: Green reportedly called into a radio station to clear the air and say he did not get knocked out.
- Traditionalist country singer Amber Digby posted six new songs from her Passion, Pride & What I Might Have Been album to her MySpace.
- Original member of of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers co-founder Chris Hillman founded his own country band, Desert Rose Band, in 1985. The group split in 1993 after a couple of No. 1s, but in a phone conversation with the Bakersfield Californian earlier this month Hillman said the band would be reuniting to record a live album. They’ll play three dates later this month in California and Colorado, but are not planning a full tour. “My best analogy is remarrying four ex-spouses,” said Hillman, “either on the female or male side, sometimes baggage has accumulated.” (MySpace)
- Carrie Underwood and LeAnn Rimes are among 15 female singers taking part in a televised special titled Stand Up to Cancer. The special will simultaneously air on NBC, ABC and CBS on Sept. 5. Both singers will also appear on a new single, “Just Stand Up,” being released on Sept. 2.
- Several churches across the country have adopted a “Live Like You Were Dying” campaign for their congregations, based on the Tim McGraw hit of the same name. Craig Wiseman, the song’s co-writer, helped design the new program for churches and says it’s not just for larger congregations.

- Russ Farmer announced that his recently completed 90-minute documentary on J.D. Crowe, titled A Kentucky Treasure: The J.D. Crowe Story, can be viewed for the first time by the public at the J.D. Crowe Bluegrass Festival on August 28 in Wilmore, KY. Plans are in the works to have the program air nationally sometime after November.

- C. Eric Banister reviewed the latest DVD releases, Legendary Performances: Tammy Wynette and Legendary Performances: Marty Robbins, from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Shout! Factory.
Both volumes are welcome releases for many reasons. For newer country music fans who haven’t had the chance to hear or see these two legends that are no longer with us, these DVDs make for excellent introductions to their contributions to the history of country music. For fans of either artists, or of country music in general, these are great additions to their library.

Is Dave Haywood going solo? This and many other of country music's most pressing questions answered in the September edition of The 9513's world famous Mailbag!
Caroline Herring likes to sing songs about life in the South. No, not exactly like Justin Moore and Jason Aldean...
The 9513's resident historian Paul W. Dennis sits down for a chat with country music legend Gene Watson.
As much as we love girl singers, we love songs about girl singers even more. Here's just a few of the many tribute songs out there.
Step away from the river and up to a jukebox, because heartbreak is only temporary, but a good song about drowning yourself—like a diamond—lasts forever.

What country artist, young or old, would you recommend as a must-listen artist to a newcomer on his/her journey through country music, and what would your essential song picks be?

Does anyone know where Toby Keith was when that beer was thrown?

I’m looking forward to a Desert Rose Band CD, and I’m not usually a fan of live CDs. They’re a criminally underrated supergroup.

I have to say that Rehab song is a guilty pleasure of mine. But hey, it fits my moniker.

That second report says he was not happy about what happened (well, neither would I be) but what did he really expect to happen when he asked that question at a NASCAR track. (I like NASCAR by the way).

I like the Kellie Pickler cover better than her last one, but her expression is a little creepy.
August 20, 2008 at 2:42 pm Permalink
My problem with the Kellie Pickler cover is that it so desperate screams: “This is ALL I got.”

I’ll take it.

Stormy,
when are you going to learn that women’s place in popular music is to be sexually attractice? I mean, I can’t think of any other value that is more important to pass on to young girls than “hey, you need to be as freakin’ hot as possible!”
I mean, how else are they supposed to actualize themselves as people?
so I guess the real question is, why are you so anti-girlpower?

How is the Kellie cover desperate? It’s a headshot. I know I’m in the minority here, but I don’t feel like she relies on her sex appeal to overcome her vocal shortcomings nearly as much as she does her personality. I disliked her on Idol, but her pluck as a country artist has kind of won me over.
August 20, 2008 at 3:45 pm Permalink
Seriously, it’s just a head shot. Everybody stay calm.
August 20, 2008 at 3:49 pm Permalink
I don’t think that headshot is designed to keep everyone calm

Telling someone to stay calm rarely keeps one calm.:)

The price of tickets to Buck’s Birthday Bash (and the fact I don’t give a rip about Martina McBride) motivated me to purchase a Desert Rose Band ticket for the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on August 28th instead. I don’t normally pay much attention to reunion concerts, but this one should be fun. 1100 Springs is playing this Sunday as part of the Americana Brunch at Safari Sams in Hollywood, so it should be a good week musically speaking.
Amber Digby worked up the courage to start writing her own songs and its working well for her. Being raised around Loretta Lynn definitely had a higely positive effect on Amber’s musical tastes. Its a shame she had to move to Texas to find an audience for her music, but I’m just glad she found one. Go Amber! (lol)
I don’t think the Kellie Pickler headshot is particularly flattering. The “Worst Picture Album Cover Ever Award” will always be held by Jamie O’neal for the “Shiver” album cover. How in the world could they pick such an unflattering shot? (Memarie’s self titled album is also in the running…)

I’m not sure Desert Rose truly ever broke up. The core of the band was Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson. Each has done solo projects; Herb seems to be on all of Hillman’s efforts and Chris seems to be on Herbs solo flights. Plus they haver recorded as a duo and both show up on miscellaneous projects together

Hey Rick,
West of Texas is playing that 1100 Springs show too, and the other band on the bill is worth seeing as well imo, so I’d recommend getting there on the early side to catch the whole show.
that goes for everyone else from LA too. It’s lining up to a damn good day of LA/Texas honky-tonk on Sunday.

Ben, its too bad Safari Sams shares a parking lot with that damnable “99 Cents Only” Store! Crikey mate! Yes, I plan on spending all afternoon there and by getting there before 2pm you don’t have to pay the $ 7 admission fee! (lol) Do you plan on hitting any of the “Dog and Pony Show” nights over the Labor Day Weekend? They have some interesting artists lined up……

Things have kind of petered out here, so its time for “Rick’s Random Bits” (of news, information, and mediocrity!):
Dale Watson will be performing on the Tuesday Night Opry on September 9th! Last weekend it was Guy Clark on the Saturday Opry and now this! Has Pete Fisher been mesmerized by the Texas / Red Dirt music scene? Will this lead to an invitation to Amber Digby to perform? Hmmmm…
Julianne “Pollyanna” Hough has confirmed she and Chuck Wicks are dating! Like OMG! Bubbles Julianne: “He’s just a great guy! He’s awesome and really, really talented. I’m having a great time getting to know him.” Now that’s deep… She is also heading back to “Dancing With The Stars” to further bolster her credibility as a country music artist who’s favorite act is U2. The juicy details are at the always entertaining Music City TV blog:
Link: http://musiccitytv.com/
Finally, The Opry is giving away a prize package to experience Jessica Simpson’s Opry Debut in September! WooHoo! Fortunately other artists scheduled to appear that night include Loretta Lynn, Patty Loveless, and Roy Clark, so its a prize worth winning!

To bne fair to Julianne Hough, she and Chuck have probably been dating for all of four minutes and now people won’t stop asking her about it.
Julia Roberts once summed up celebrity relationships thusly:
You are talking in a room and the press are all: OMG they’re dating, OMG they’re dating.
You go out to dinner and the press are all: OMG they’re getting married, OMG they’re getting married.
You get married and the press are all: OMG they’re gonna break up, they’re gonna break up.
You get divorced and the press are all: OMG WHY did they break up, can you believe they broke up.
On a brighter note, they are trying to staple Carrie Underwood to Michael Phelps.

I would just like to point out that when my hair is cut short….I NEVER LOOK THAT FREAKIN CUTE! Damn that Kellie Pickler. Then, when my hair is long, I never look like Jessica Simpson…Someone get Ken Paves on the phone STAT! I need hair help…pro bono that is. (Boys…Ken Paves is Jessica’s stylist…)
PS – Why would anyone throw a perfectly good beer in the air? What is wrong with people….
And can someone bring me up to speed on Julianne Hough? I never watch DWTS but I got her two time winner thing…and then how did she get on my radio?
August 21, 2008 at 6:07 pm Permalink
@Rick – Your mention of Guy Clark being on the Opry last week had me hunt down the online WSM stream, so I caught the few songs that he performed. Thanks for mentioning that, although I don’t think any of the artists you mentioned (Guy Clark, Dale Watson, Amber Digby) could be considered Red Dirt.
August 21, 2008 at 6:30 pm Permalink
Brody, I thought of you when I watched Clark on the Opry last weekend.

Leeann, did he sound old–or was it just a combination of the internet stream and cheap headphones I was using?
August 21, 2008 at 10:00 pm Permalink
Brody, his voice did sound aged, but I’m not too familiar with how he typically sounds. I liked his last song though, the only one I caught.

“On a brighter note, they are trying to staple Carrie Underwood to Michael Phelps.”
Apparently she started it so maybe she wants to be…ah…stapled.
news that American Idol alum, Carrie Underwood, has a crush on him, Phelps admits, “That’s the first I’ve heard of that. That’s pretty cool.”
