Paisley, Underwood Among Winners at American Music Awards
- Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood hauled in awards in the country category at the American Music Awards on Sunday.
- Jerry Jeff Walker warmed the crowd for George Jones on Saturday night in Grand Prairie, TX and 30 minutes away, a frail Loretta Lynn fought off the fatigue and overheating to turn in a family-oriented affair at Billy Bob’s.
- Sadly, Jessica Simpson thinks reading blogs is the biggest waste of time.
- Boston Globe correspondent Marc Hirsh on Jason Aldean’s attempted marriage of metal and country at Lowell Memorial Auditorium on Thursday night:
Aldean seemed to be in fine voice, but there was a labored stiffness in his rock ‘n’ roll moves, such as when he jumped off the drum riser with nothing resembling abandon. And he drained all emotion from “Laughed Until We Cried” by singing it while shaking hands across the front row. Right when he was supposed to be the most connected to his material, Aldean was on autopilot.
- Dave Alvin’s latest album, West of West, features his take on 13 songs belonging to other California acts, all of which aren’t necessarily country, yet came from a roots based background.
- Craig Bickhardt uses Malcolm Gladwell to support his point that the industry should be mining 30-40 year old songwriters, not 18-30 year olds.
- LIFE and Google teamed up to provide an archive of photos stretching back to the 1750s, some of them never before published. Here’s a cool one of A.P. Carter. (via NashvilleGab)
- Episode 15 of Nashville at Nite features Richie McDonald and Jimmy Wayne.

Do we know for fact whether Jessica actually CAN read?

Oh, was there a music awards show last night? Considering the country category winners list, I missed absolutely nothing…..
Well it wasn’t Jerry Jeff Walker, George Jones, or Loretta Lynn, BUT 1100 Springs did put on a great show at the Redwood “Pirate” Bar in downtown Los Angeles yesterday afternoon. They tossed in the Bob Wills gem “Right Or Wrong” to obviously prove they were actually from Teaxs! (lol) They should definitely add “Redneck Mother” to their song list!
As cute as Ashlie Kolb is, I still can’t force myself to watch her latest “Nashville At Night” gabfest. Sorry Ashlie.
Considering that the vast majority of what is written about Jessica Simpson on country music blogs is negative, can you blame her? Somehow carpetbaggers don’t like being called out….

The only country artist to perform last night was Taylor Swift. She sang “White Horse” and sounded much better than she did at the CMA Awards show.

Zach,
That was probably because she felt more at home in that setting that with all of those country folks she had to sing with at the CMA’s.

You’re probably right, sadly.

While technically “West of West” is Dave Alvin’s latest, it was released in 2006.

go back and watch taylor swift’s performance from last night’s awards show. she was obviously lip-synching. i was astounded that it was so obvious. it’s almost as if she wasn’t even trying to get it right.
pink, however, was not lip-synching and sounded awesome. that girl can flat-out belt out a tune. the jury is out on taylor swift.

The AMAs had some awesome performances last night
Swift was probably lip-synching, now that you point it out Mikeky

On second thought, I disagree… she is not lip-synching
It gets pretty obvious at the end

I’ll have to watch Taylor’s performance to tell. I guess that this means that White Horse will be the next single? *hopes*
Pink always does well at shows. That girl has one powerful voice.

“White Horse” is the next single to be released to radio (officially) Dec 9.

If Taylor Swift would have known how strong the box office numbers would be for “Twilight”, she could have made her Romeo like love interest in her “Love Story” music video a vampire! It sure would have made the night time walk through the garden scene a whole lot more interesting….

I would probably consider reading blogs a waste of time too if it took me as long to read one as it likely takes Jess.
Mikey: I have heard a few performances from Pink that left my cat hiding under the couch, so I wouldn’t bet on her not lip syncing.

Also, on an non-country note: Gwen Steffani is back to touring with No Doubt!!! Maybe now her music will stop sucking.

Hey we managed to get Sheryl Crow back from ass bad to bad ass–now we just need to work on Gwen. And maybe, just maybe, Liz Phair ain’t a lost cause.

Watched a portion of the AMA’s last evening. There was one performance that I found utterly incredible. Forgive please, I know this is a country website, but Annie Lenox was brilliant.
No one could touch her. And how daring of this 53 year old diva to sing with only a piano for accompaniment. What a role model, whatever your genre. She sent chills up my spine.

About Taylor’s performance at the AMAs, is it possible that both the claims of lip-synching and the claims of live singing are correct? While watching the show, I definitely saw a few moments in the first half of her performance when the movement of Taylor’s mouth didn’t quite synch up with the words. My impression is that she was definitely singing live after she stood up and moved to the second mic, but I think it’s possible she was lip-synching to a pre-recorded vocal for the first half of her performance. If she was, it wasn’t the studio vocal, it was a track recorded during rehearsal.
I don’t see why Taylor would feel the need to do that unless the producers felt that something about the two mic scenario dictated it. In any case, “White Horse” is a song very much within Taylor’s limited vocal range and it doesn’t require much vocal control, which is typically a weakness of hers. So there’s no reason Taylor couldn’t have sung it live.
I’m not motivated to rewatch the performance, so this is all my initial impression. In any case, I don’t think the staging did Taylor any favors, as I thought her presence was oddly lifeless for the first half of the song. She hasn’t quite learned to sell restraint yet. I would like to see her learn by watching someone like Dido.

Annie is amazing for fans of any genre.
While watching Christina Aguleria I had to ponder Taylor Swift. Ashton Sheppard is totally the X-tina and Taylor is totally the Brittany.

I don’t think Loretta was frail at all according to the review she ROCKED Billy Bob’s and was in perfect voice..Just because someone sweats doesn’t mean they are frail,lol..
November 24, 2008 at 10:22 pm Permalink
@Timeo – Thanks for the info, I’ll have to give it a spin.
@Countrythang – Based on the review, she turned in a nice performance, but sentences like “the 74-year-old singer seemed to be struggling physically just a bit during her hour on stage” and “concern of her bandmates about this apparent over-heating was obvious” sure make it sound like she was a little frail.

Countrythang, a couple of days ago, before reading the review of Loretta’s concert at Billy Bob’s, I stumbled across some YouTube videos of her appearance on the Crook & Chase show from this past August, and the first thing I noticed was how frail she is looking. I posted the videos to the forum. She can still sing but she does seem to be getting weaker physically.

dudley, i think you’re absolutely correct. taylor swift was lip-synching in the first half (the sitting down part). when she got up, it appeared to be live vocals. i have no idea why. eh. it’s still cheating.
and no, i watched the pink performance again. she was not lip-synching.
i agree about annie lennox. she was astounding. absoutely spine-chilling performance.

I was actually very happy for Brad Paisely winning his first AMA. He seemed genuinely happy and sincere.
I am also happy for Carrie Underwood winning Country Album of the year, since she lost at the CMAs in that category. Unfortunately though– it means a heck of a lot more to win the CMA Album of the year then a fan voted award though. lol But it gives Carrie something to aspire to down the road.
I am pretty sure Taylor was lip syncing her performance– because her mouth did not fit the words. It was odd. If so, that would be the first time a “country” singer ever lip synced, I think. lol
Overall, it was a pretty decent night– except for the pussycat dolls and horrendous kiddie bands like the Jonas Brothers and Miley/Taylor,etc.
However I admit that Miley Cyrus was actually surprisingly on key, and not as bad as I thought she would be. She may have a future as an adult singer someday… as she has inherited Billy Rae’s deep voice, for sure. It has potential.

Forgot to add— that Annie Lennox and Pink/Sarah McLaughlin were outstanding. Alicia Keys was great as usual too.

I understand that Rascal Flatts took home the award for the best Country band once again.
How sweet.

Is it a real surprise Taylor Swift would lipsynch? A fake performance for a fake singer.
