One Out of Every Five Albums Sold Belong to Taylor Swift; Jason Aldean Leads Releases; Charlie Louvin Benefit DVD Seeks Backers
- Taylor Swift‘s Speak Now is a lock to sell more than a million copies in its first week, and HITS Daily Double is reporting that 17-18% of all album sales belonged to Swift, which would be a new record. (via Music Mix)
- To help offset Charlie Louvin‘s medical bills, the folks at Judd Films have donated their time and talents to film Louvin’s show on Dec. 3, the 50th anniversary of the album Satan Is Real. The goal is to have a DVD made with proceeds going to Louvin, but money needs to be raised to pay for production costs. Saving Country Music has details on how you can help.
- Alison Krauss performed a full set of nothing but Louvin Brothers songs this past Saturday as part of another benefit to help raise money for Charlie Louvin. Jimmy Carter reports that over $16,000 was raised.
- Asleep at the Wheel founding band member Lucky Oceans on Ray Benson:
“Ray is one of the best businessmen I know. Who else could keep a band together for 40 years playing such niche music? He dreams and schemes and never thinks anything will fail and goes headlong into anything he does. His connections, people skills and showmanship have kept the band going. The scores of great musicians who have played with the band have helped uphold its reputation, but Ray is at the center of it all. And having a name like ‘Asleep at the Wheel’ has helped. Wonder who thought of that?”
- My Kind of Country’s Occasional Hope recommends the new Aaron Watson record, The Road & The Rodeo.

New releases for the week of November 2, 2010 include:
- Taylor Swift is working with Elizabeth Arden to develop a new fragrance, due out sometime late next year.
- Country Music Pride is giving away one of those new, 16-disc Hank Williams box sets: Hank Williams: The Complete Mother’s Best Recordings…Plus!. Just send a picture showing why you deserve it.
- Jimmy Webb on the challenges and rewards of songwriting:
It always feels like the first time to me,” he said. “It’s sort of like warming up for tennis or vocalizing. I have to get that thing going… It then becomes very rewarding for me as I approach the end of it and I keep fitting things in, and it feels good to me. It’s just the best feeling I have ever had. Sometimes it goes off the rails and I can feel that I’m losing it. I’m like a kid with my skateboard skidding out in front of me, and there’s nothing much I can do about it.”
- Ryan Bingham stopped by WFUV to preform songs from his new album, Junky Star.
- Michael McCall on the new Jason Aldean album:
The focus, however, is on reflecting and celebrating life in dirt-road America. More than ever, Aldean succeeds at bringing alive a demographic rarely seen or heard in the media — and he does so with a fresh sound that steers clear of lyrical cliches.

Thanks for the Charlie Louvin link! We don’t have the star power of Allison Krauss but we’ll do what we can. Already raised $750 in the first day, which is well on the way to the $3,000 goal.

Opry Alert! Tonight’s Opry will feature Jerrod Neimann, Vince Gill, Del McCoury, Jimmy Webb, and Josh Turner (and only three “Opry Legends” to muck things up). Grade: B+

Michael McCall said: “The focus, however, is on reflecting and celebrating life in dirt-road America. Can’t say I blame him…
Finally an Alison Krauss concert I’d like to have heard and it wasn’t streamed online. Oh well…
I really enjoyed hearing Ray Benson talk about the history of AATW a few weeks back for the Grammy Museum archives. It was really an interesting story of musical adventure! lol) Its a good thing the state of Texas exists or there is no way AATW could have survived intact for 40 years.

strange… I listened through the Taylor Swift album a few times with Zune Pass and really liked it… but when I got my monthly credit allowance for ten songs, I couldn’t find one TS song that I actually wanted to listen to repeatedly. It’s like the musical equivalent of a People magazine-not something that needs to be kept around. Anyway, I bought ten Steeldrivers tracks instead.

There are enough Jessica Andrews songs to create a “hits” album?

I have to say I’m quite impressed with the new Aldean record. Thankfully, as usual, its pandering, unbearably loud lead single is its low point.
The record of the same name sounds like a country-rock take on the Foo Fighters record “There Is Nothing Left To Lose” to me. What I mean by that is that, much like that record, it signals a turning point toward a more melodic and easy to take in direction without feeling watered-down and saccharine in that it has plenty of texture, muscle and edge to it. The louder moments are more harmonic and skimp on the heavy distortion, while the softer moments have more meat to them.
Indeed one of my central criticisms of “Wide Open” was that, when you get past the two brain-hemorrhaging loud rocking singles on the album (“She’s Country”, “Crazy Town”)……….Aldean is hardly that 24/7 chicken-fried metal legend wanna-be that conventional wisdom would like you to believe. “Wide Open” was actually his softest, most sentimentally charged album to date and more often than not sounded like something that could be serviced to Adult Contemporary if not for the traditional country instrumental touch-ups and ostensibly country list-song theme selections.
I think “My Kinda Party” is Aldean’s most realized, representative album to date, that speaks to him much better than “Wide Open” did. He also has never sounded more convincing as a vocalist (and he’s no exceptional vocalist by any stretch, though I also just as adamantly shrugged at accusations he can’t sing at all) here. Nothing original, but it’s an exceptionally produced and accessible unoriginal album.

Another album being released on November 2nd that might be of interest to some readers is Elvis Costello’s National Ransom. Musicians on it include Vince Gill, Stuart Duncan, Mike Compton, Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller.

Actually, Alison & friends did 5 songs, all associated with but not all written by the Louvin Brothers.
And no disrespect to the great Ray Benson and his band, but there are longer-lived niche music acts than AATW.

Ah, yes, there’s the Stormy who dismisses commercial success as irrelevant…except when she doesn’t. But the title of this collection isn’t “hits,” it’s “best.”. And there are plenty of choices for that.

The Elvis Costello record is fantastic – I can’t recommend it enough. The lead single is a Jim Lauderdale co-write called ‘I Lost You’.

And the Elvis Costello album is 3.99 today at Amazon. Listening to it now. I like it better than the last one which I was so-so on.
November 2, 2010 at 9:58 pm
I now like Costello’s last album better than I initially did. I’ve only given the new one a cursory listen so far, but I’m enjoying it.

Some of the songs are immediately hooky – like I Lost You – and some are real growers – like All These Strangers and Dr Watson, I Presume.

No one has really said much about the Aldean/Kelly Clarkson duet. Guess we’ll have to listen to their performance on the CMA Awards next week to find out how it is. At least it can’t be as bad as Gwyneth Paltrow, Sugarland and the new ego spreader Taylor Swift.

“One Out Of Every Five Albums Sold Belong To Taylor Swift”
Do these terms sound familiar?
1990′s: “One Out Of Every Five Albums Sold Belong To Garth Brooks”
Late 1990′s-Early 2000′s: “One Out Of Every Five Albums Sold Belong To Shania Twain”
Remember when those occurred and after that everyone was tired of Garth and Shania’s ways of attracting attention and their egomaniac gusto about it. I’m predicting that within the 5 or 10 years that Taylor will follow the track of Garth and Shania in that another one person will take her place and she’ll be somewhere laughing at the fans who made her famous and though we won’t forget how it happened we’ll know how it happened.
I would like to suggest an article about country stars who hype their own success. Would it be possible?

Country stars have bene hyping their own success for as long as there have been country stars–and most had no ill effects from it at all.
The thing to remember in comparing “One out of five albums sold” is that there are now a much, much smaller number of albums being sold altogether right now. 20 percent of what?
I understand people were making the upper reaches of the album charts in recent weeks with a few– count ‘em, a few–thousand CDs sold. And if you find a chart that says it includes album downloads, then we’re sort of in an apple and oranges situation for comparisons anyway…

That’s “been.” Have BEEN.
