One Night Rodeo Voted First-Ever Next GAC Star
- The band One Night Rodeo came out on top of last night’s finale of the Next GAC Star, making them the first winners of the competition. Their first single will be released on iTunes next week. Here’s a little info on the band from a press release:
One Night Rodeo is composed of band members Duane Allison (bass), Mike Elrod (drums), Cory Hildreth (lead vocals) and Jack Tamburin (electric guitar). Currently rooted in Bradenton, Florida, the band was founded by Tamburin 13 years ago, and the current members have been performing together for seven years.
- In keeping with the “crazy” theme of her new record, Lee Ann Womack posted a list of her favorite crazy songs, appropriately topped by Willie Nelson’s “Crazy.” Crazy stuff.
- Daily Trivia: Country Music Hall of Fame member and former Louisiana governor Jimmie Davis was born on this day in 1899 (listen to “You Are My Sunshine”).
- PopWatch Blog’s Chris Willman asks, “wasn’t [Taylor] Swift undeniably country’s Ambassador of the Year in 2008,” and makes a case for her being Entertainer of the Year, while the Tennessean’s Peter Cooper waxes on about the snubbing of Rascal Flatts from the same category in yesterday’s announcement of the CMA Award nominees.
- The Austin Chronicle’s Jim Caligiuri says the new Rattlin’ Bones album from Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson is more acoustic bluegrass than anything either of them have done while Chambers adds that the new record is closer to the stuff the couple listens to at home than their past work. (watch videos for “Rattlin’ Bones” and “Monkey On A Wire”)
- Dierks Bentley’s new album hits store on Feb. 3 and his first single from that album, “Feel That Fire,” was sent to radio this week.
- Brad Paisley also sent his first single from his upcoming mostly-instrumental album, Play, to radio this week. The single, titled “Start a Band,” is a duet with Keith Urban.
- The Front Porch Country Band posted “a tribute to police officers, firefighters, emergency response personnel, and all who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001″ in the form of a photo montage and accompanying song titled “Echoes of Your Love.”
- Before anyone says anything, yes, it’s a short news day. So if nothing strikes your fancy, feel free to discuss the brevity of today’s roundup.

Forgotten Artists: Cal Smith - When the Florida Sunshine Opry (Eustis, FL) booked its first “name” (non-local) act back in 1999, the act they chose was Cal Smith. No wonder, since Cal is an excellent singer, musician, storyteller and showman. | View more artists featured in Paul W. Dennis' recurring "Forgotten Artists" feature »

Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.

If TS is entertainer of the year, consider me unentertained. I’ll buy the Brad Paisley (mostly) instrumental album, but I bet it won’t sell like they hope, and he’ll have a “proper” record out by March.

I doubt if hopes would be very high for big sales on a (mostly) instrumental record. It’s a very good album, in any event.

One Night Rodeo, huh? should they go on tour with Perfect Stranger?

I expect Brad’s album to be good and it’ll probably buy him some time due to the few songs with vocal performances. I guess the first single will buy Keith Urban some more time too, since Urban seems to be stalling a new album release. First the GH project, then a remixed release from an old album.

I’m really excited about the new Casey Chambers album. It really sounds good.

“One Night Rodeo” is a very polished bar band with tight harmonies but unless they score a killer song like “I Loved Her First” the odds of them getting on Top 40 radio is nil. Recent bands like Whiskey Falls gave radio a good shot and got nowhere. It was just a shame Lane Turner didn’t win as he was hoping for a second shot at age 42. J.C. Andersen should try out for the next round of American Idol if he wants a country career…
The Lee Ann Womack “crazy” stuff is really a hoot but as a marketing tool I don’t see it improving album sales….
I’ve been a big fan of Kasey Chambers early music since around 2002, and especially the music of her family’s “Dead Ringer Band” before Kasey went solo. “Rattlin’ Bones” is really a turn around back to her country roots after her last pop album “Carnival” and I’m glad she did it. “Rattlin Bones” seems inspired by everyone from The Carter Family, to Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, to Buddy and Julie Miller. My only complaint is an overall lack of stylistic variety and too many slow numbers, but its still enjoyable. When I see Kasey and Shane and her Dad Bill tomorrow night I’m going to get Bill to autograpgh my copy of Kimber Sparks’ “It’s Her Turn” which Bill recently produced. I won’t mention it to them but I like Kimber’s new album far more than Kasey’s and Shane’s………
Brad Paisley feels compelled to get this instrumental album out of his system and it will have no negative repurcussions on his current staemroller popularity. It is a vanity side project and will be treated as such. What’s sad is that a killer instrumental could still do well on airgead country radio if given airplay, but that will never happen these days because the focus groups say no way……..

I’ve known One Night Rodeo since I was a kid–they were one of the first bands I ever saw in a bar (they used to frequent Joyland in Sarasota). Bar band is literally the correct description. I cannot believe they won a national talent competition…

Lee Ann Womacks’s crazy song list …
8. Out Of My Head (And Back In My Bed) - Loretta Lynn
Possibly my favorite Loretta track. Her vocal on that one amazes me to this day. The woman can sing the fire out of a song when she wants to. Ah, I love Loretta Lynn.

Love Lee Ann’s “Crazy List”, glad “mama He’s Crazy” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” made the list!

You’re right One Night Rodeo is a VERY polished bar band but… so was lonestar, emerson drive, and rascal flatts (formerly ace’s high). where else do you play if your not touring? They have been paying their dues in florida for a LONG TIME. They did not win by accident, they have a very loyal fan following. I think they are very deserving of this. Lane and JC were equally talented and will probably get deals fast. But i think it was nice to see a band in one of these contests and they won. with desmond producing it they should be fine.

THANK YOU CHUCK! I COULDN’T AGREE MORE! They may very well SEEM like a polished bar band but, to anyone who don’t know them, or have a bad opinion of them, YOU SHOULD ASK YOURSELF, DO I HAVE ANY INSTRUMENTAL AND SINGING TALENT? IF YOU DID THEN YOU WOULD BE WHERE THEY ARE RIGHT NOW!
remember the old saying,…
Walk a Mile in my shoes…
If you could, then you would see and feel all the heartache that each one has had to endure to get where they are at present, and not need to leave any negative opinions of the band!
You na sayers need to take a look at EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN ANY GENRE OF MUSIC that became FAMOUS or ONE HIT WONDERS, were ALL at ONE TIME, NOBODYS ALSO! They had to also be worked with, polished, cut, molded, into what they have become today, and made well known, in huge part, due to people such as Desmond Child, and Victoria Shaw!
This has been a life long dream for each of these guys that, through all thier hard effort is finally paying off for them!
This is their shot at something GREAT for each of the guys, and thier families, that had been coming for a long time and is well deserved!
My only regret for them is that all thier close friends and family that have passed on didn’t get to see the huge accomplishment that they All have earned and are not there to enjoy the ride with them…
